koruji: And mind you the Koran was not written in the lifetime of your prophet either, and if you are not to continue covering yourself with the veil of ignorance much of that book were stories lifted from the bible, and modified to fit a new location and time. Religious texts were written as a guidance for the followers of religions at particular points in time, and thus reflect the state of that society's evolution at the time of writing. That is why the old testament has a deeply different temperament from the new testament.

The real issue is not that these religious texts recorded things as they were done in their age and time, but that people who live in the 21st century continue to adhere to things written for the situation of in 1500 BC. It is truly sad, because those guys back then were revolutionaries of thought and national organization and they would be amazed, if they found themselves in the 21st century, to learn that people would want to do things the way they were done 4000 years ago. They would surely tell you how crazy it would be for them to be expected to follow rules from 6000 BC when they were alive in 1500BC.

We truly need to start thinking in these terms. The people who gave us the rules we are killing and maiming over in the 21st century would have thrown them away long ago - they were revolutionaries who changed the way things were done in their time, and hence threw away old "useless" traditions.

Examples of what I mean:
1) The story of Abraham refusing to sacrifice Isaac was a revolution in religious worship because it demonstrated how human sacrifice became a thing of the past, marking the birth of what is now known as Judaism. If human sacrifice was not an integral part of the religion that Abraham use to know it would have been an absurd thing for him to be "tested" this way by his God. That same human-sacrificing religion dominated most of the rest of the world for ages.

2) The era of Jesus marked another revolution in religious worship where much of the capital punishment underlying the administration of justice in Judaism were thrown away. Yet, paying attention to the story-line, it is easy to see one last, special, human sacrifice in the death of Jesus Christ to appease the great God for our original sin - except that Jesus was no ordinary human and was raised back to life and heavenly kingship after 3 days. Not only did Jesus' last sacrifice end all need for human sacrifices to appease for our original sin, but all the hand-cutting, eye-for-for an eye, and death for insults that characterized Judaism till the 1st century. Unfortunately these things that Jesus eradicated got incorporated into the new religion that took root around the 7th century.

3) Mohammed's era marked the introduction of monotheism in his part of the world. This same people that Mohammed changed likely took the religion they had from those same people from whom Abraham had separated himself about 2500 years or so earlier. You should note that he was not the first to try to impose monotheism on his society - check out Akhenaten of ancient Egypt.

Of course, those who claim to follow in the steps of these revolutionaries bring back some, or even all, of what was changed - bad habits they say die hard!!!

In any case, the next evolution in religious worship will be the end of "collective" religion due to their excesses, even as their gross hypocrisy and barbarism are glaring to all in the age of reason. And by that last statement I meant all religions, not just some!!! Religious books and authorities will eventually become a thing of the past. It is a matter of time!

Laden’s killing in Pakistan by
special U.S. troops, there has, till
date, been no reported backlash
in Nigeria, as might have been
feared. One reason for this, I
believe, is the extreme alertness
shown by the security agencies.
The Inspector-General of Police,
Hafiz Ringim, immediately placed
all state police commands on red
alert, with commissioners of
police directed to take
necessary measures to protect
both citizens and American
interests in the country that
may be targeted for acts of
violence. For obvious reasons,
commissioners of police in the
northern part of the country
were under special orders to be
vigilant in preempting and
containing any backlash.
This was in spite of the police
high command’s view, according
to its spokesman, that the
event of Osama bin Laden’s
death should attract no
negative reaction from the
country, as“it does not
concern” Nigeria. The point is
that preemptive action was
taken nevertheless. It is that
spirit of leaving nothing to
chance when it comes to national
security, of being extra alert
and prepared all the time that
has been frequently missing in
Nigeria’s public security
management. Ordinary citizens,
too, who felt endangered, acted
with extreme precaution for
their personal safety. In volatile
Muslim states of the country,
especially Kano, the news of
Osama bin Laden’s death
provoked a spontaneous
stampede among non-indigenes,
who fled to places of refuge
such as military and police
barracks. Trusting their instincts,
and with the horrific images of
the slaughter and arson of the
recent post-election riots still
fresh in their memories, these
citizens simply fled to the
nearest havens for safety.
They did not wait for any official
government announcements
assuring them of their security
or advising them to relocate
temporarily. They sensed danger,
based on past tragic experience,
and took preemptive action.
Vigilance is the word. In handling
the grave issues of internal
security challenges confronting
the country, President Goodluck
Jonathan and the new
government he will form after
his inauguration on May 29
should pay more attention to
strengthening preventive
security measures, rather than
the reactive, as in the past.
Nigeria has shed enough blood of
innocent citizens in its
intermittent ethno-religious
riots, often provoked by the
flimsiest excuse. Particularly
grievous to bear has been the
killing of National Youth Service
Corps members in the post-
election violence that erupted in
several Northern states. There is
a feeling in many parts of the
country that people have
already stretched their
endurance to the limit. It’s a
dangerous time to allow any
other breaches of public security
that will lead again to mass

Israeli prime minister Binyamin
Netanyahu has rejected a
Palestinian unity agreement,
calling it a
"tremendous blow to peace".
His comments on Wednesday
come after representatives of
Palestinian factions met in the
Egyptian capital, Cairo, to mark
a landmark reconciliation pact
signed a day earlier.
Khaled Meshaal, the leader of
the Hamas movement, and
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian
president and leader of
Fatah, attended a ceremony,
meeting face-to-face for the
first time since 2006.
"What happened today in Cairo is
a tremendous blow to peace and
a great victory for terrorism,"
Netanyahu told reporters during
a visit to London.
He criticised Palestinian president
Mahmoud Abbas for striking a
deal with Hamas.
"The only way we can make
peace is with our neighbours
who want peace. Those who
want to eliminate us, those who
practice terror against us, are
not partners for peace,"
Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu added that a great
struggle was under way in the
Middle East "between the forces
of democracy and moderation
and the forces of tyranny and
terror".
"I think the fate of the Middle
East and the fate of peace
hangs in the balance [depending
on] which force wins out."
'No to blackmail'
Abbas brushed off Netanyahu's
criticism and launched a scathing
attack on Israel, saying that
"we reject blackmail and it is no
longer possible for us to accept
the [Israeli] occupation of
Palestinian land".
He also said reconciliation with
Hamas was an internal
Palestinian affair.
"They are our brothers and
family. We may differ, and we
often do, but we still arrive at a
minimum level of understanding."
Abbas also said Israel cannot
continue to act as "a state
above the law" and called for an
end to construction in Jewish
settlements on lands the
Palestinians want for a future
state.
"Mr. Netanyahu, you must choose
between settlements and
peace," he said.
Britain has cautiously welcomed
the agreement.
"We hope that Palestinian unity
between Fatah and Hamas will be
a step forward," prime minister
David Cameron's spokeswoman
said.
"Clearly we will judge any
Palestinian government on its
actions. We want the Palestinian
government, if it emerges, to
reject violence and engage in a
meaningful peace process."
Cameron also said Britain
believed the wave of Arab
uprisings had brought an
opportunity to push forward the
Middle East peace process.
Meanwhile, many Palestinians see
a reconciliation between Fatah
and Hamas as crucial for their
drive for an
independent state in territories
Israel occupied in the 1967 war.
Fatah and Hamas have been
bitterly divided since June 2007
when Hamas took over the Gaza
Strip, routing Fatah loyalists
that effectively split the
Palestinian territories into two
separate entities with separate
