Hi there and good evening. I have 2 hopefully nice setups that I am looking forward to take at market open. They are both 1:4 positions on both the gbp-usd and the usd-jpy. On the gbp-usd we are looking to a profit of 410 pips while on the usd-jpy we are looking forward to 230 pips of movement.

D1, D2 & D3 are levels of resistance (levels to sell from)
A1. A2 & A3 are levels of support (levels to buy from)
D3 & A3 are unfair values and as such need no price action confirmation before trades are taken

EURUSD
D3=1.4388
D2=1.4317
D1=1.4211
A1=1.4140
A2=1.4035
A3=1.3966

GBPUSD
D3=1.6334
D2=1.6253
D1=1.6172
A1=1.6091
A2=1.6012
A3=1.5932

These levels are valid for today, Thursday 11th of August alone.

Thank you for your brief and comprehensive response to my posting .I really appreciate it so much and i pray God almighty will keep stregnthen you in knowledge .

I want you to know that,the problem has not yet been solved.I tried to place a pending order this nite but the response was that,invalid parameter and when i tried it further i got another response that invalid SL /TP.

Please what do you think i can do about this I am using alpari or is it because i am setting it on my demo account or where do you think i got it wrong based on your understanding?

pictures, they say tell a thousand words. Let me explain using pictures.

Fig1 shows price at 1.4226

Fig2
take special note of the field labeled "type"
the type of order can be either "instant execution" (meaning you would buy/sell at the price you are seeing on your screen also called "market price)

note here that I changed the type of order to "pending order"
there are four types of pending order

(1) Buy limit: this option helps you buy below the present price. For instance, market price is at 1.4226 and you want to buy maybe the re-test of a previously broken resistance at 1.4200

(2) Sell Limit: this option helps you sell above the market price. For instance, you want to sell after price hits the 61.8% fib retrace level of a bearish impulsive wave. Where the 61.8% fib level is at 1.4280 but market price is 1.4226

(3) Buy Stop : this option helps you buy above the present price. For instance, price just formed a 1-2-3 high and you want to buy only after the break of the point 2 where point 2 is at 1.4473 but market price is at 1.4226.

(4) Sell Stop: this option helps you sell below the present price. For instance you want to sell only if price breaks below the swing low on a particular time frame where the swing low is at 1.4156 but price is presently at 1.4226.

Pending orders can either be STOP ORDERS or LIMIT ORDERS.
One can have either a BUY STOP ORDER or a SELL STOP ORDER (same for limit orders).

BUY STOP

To buy above the present (market price)

SELL STOP

To sell below the present (market) price

BUY LIMIT

To buy below the present (market) price

SELL LIMIT

To sell above the present (market) price.

You cannot compare the gains or loss of an interest rate differential with a move of 100 pips. I know all about swaps, and in fact, if you go to fxstreet.com, they have a calculator that helps you calculate your earnings on a carry trade over time.

The swaps only make sense when you are trading up to 50 to 500 Standard lots like the big dogs do. That is why long term investors factor in swaps into their trades. As far as intra-day traders like me are concerned, swaps are not important.

They only mean that for a short trade on the AUD or NZD, you won't gain $10 per pip on a Standard trade. You will probably gain $8.2 if you have a winning short trade.

So if like I did, I sold the NZDUSD and made 100 pips from it, why would I bother about swaps? Again, I follow the news because it tells what is about to happen. With it, you can make informed decisions. I was also guided by comments by the NZD finance minister:

"intervention is up to the RBNZ" (this was 45 minutes after intervention).

On Friday last week and Tuesday, the same guy had made comments that a Strong Kiwi was of great concern to the NZ govt.

On the strength of these comments and the eventual intervention, what USD pair do you think I should be selling? EURUSD, GBPUSD, or NZDUSD? Look at the performance of the three pairs in the first 3 hours post intervention.

The news is there to guide us. I use it, analyse it and then use it to make rational trades.

Your call was defective from the get-go. In an intervention, it is always good to know which currency the central bank is buying with its own currency. In yesterday's move by the BoJ, they sold close to 500billion Yen and bought USD. After the initial intervention, another round of selling was done at 78.35 (don't ask how I know; I have access to some deadly insider news software). This massive flow of USD buying is what has prompted USD strength, especially in the carry trade currencies of the AUD and NZD.

I personally did not trade the USDJPY, but sold the NZDUSD (see my post on this at 3am this morning when the intervention took place). You can see how far south the NZDUSD has moved.

Always understand the fundamentals thoroughly before going technical.

Think about the fact that USA outsources most of its product to Asia.
Also think about the words I highlighted in bold "carry trade" . . .

Making my first million came through forex trading. It was in January 2010, I started out with just a little over $1,000 and traded the pound-dollar almost exclusively throughout that month.
