Hello Guys. I guess everyone has settled in ? For those still trying to getting admission and funding, don't give up. Those of us who have benefited from here will do our best in helping others too.

By the way,I did change my school to Stanford. Remember the guy I was always mailing at Stanford? He was able to get funding for me as one of his prospective students left for Cambridge in the UK. So I'm super elated and glad. Though I wasted some money processing stuff to go to TAMU, I'm optimistic going to Stanford is worth it.
Congrats man!

Hi all.

I'm a #FALL19 applicant. Just wanted to know if there's any WhatsApp group that I can join. I think the biggest challenge with taking the GRE is the fact that it requires serious self-study; self-discipline and accountability. It would be nice to have a group where we can all encourage one another and the spirit of discipline can rub off on all of us!
That's the purpose of this thread!

Way to go man! Totally understand. Really appreciate your prayers. smiley I've deferred my WVU admission till Fall 2019, and God willing, I'd be applying to at least 2 other schools for Fall 2019... Contemplating retaking the GRE as well (crazy work schedule)... Btw, do you still check your NL mail?

No matter the schools you are looking at, try to reach out to faculty in the department especially those with matching research interests. Funding for Masters is a hard sell but not impossible....

Good evening e-fam. Please I need urgent response to a Q. My GRE is coming up in Sept. and I'm narrowing down schools to apply to. My proposed course is MS Biotechnology, and I've spoken to a few grad coord (especially because of my low GPA of 2.8/4). I’m one of the no funding, no going set of people.

ponpon, justwise, lagosismyhome, sirriddy, aanexplus, quoran, RexCheeng, mfarad, drhopeful, Time2Smile, jaybiz007, et al.....
I second the grad coords on the impact of a good GRE score and a solid SOP. From your profile, I see you have some research experience. Sell it to PIs! Let any faculty you contact know about your research experience and how it relates to their research (peruse their publications on ResearchGate )... Hence, for funding, you should be contacting faculty in research areas that closely aligns with yours, not the grad coordinator. The Grad/program coordinator is more like a gate keeper except his/her research area is of interest to you. You may ask Grad coords about general funding scenario in their program e.g in some programs, only PhDs are funded.

All the best in your GRE!

5. Are you aware that people further their studies for different reasons other than the limited reasons you gave above? The world is full of opportunities and everyone's path is different.
6. Are you aware that going to a top school does not guarantee a job offer after school?

My point: The flavor of your post was haughty. Hence, my response to you. Do not use your personal preferences to judge other people. They are not you. Learn to understand individual differences.
@reDazey To buttress your points, permit me to share the following excerpts from a US news article I read during my gradschool selection stage:

"...While useful, the downside of rankings is that they leave out hundreds of outstanding graduate schools, with long lists of satisfied, successful, and loyal alumni. And there is absolutely no reliable statistical correlation between where someone attended graduate school and his or her ultimate professional success...

...Attending a more prestigious institution may initially open some doors, but your ultimate success will depend on what you bring to the table in terms of communication skills, motivation, resilience, and determination. Do not just pick a graduate program because of what someone else thinks; pick those programs to which you'll apply because they resonate with what you are seeking. In the end, you will be a happier student and alumnus, and most likely, more fulfilled in your chosen profession..."

Question: Please I need gurus in the house to help me reduce these schools to best 6 and 4 respectively. I'm writing my GRE on Tuesday 10th of April, that's in 2days time. I will be sending my GRE score on the test day to the best 4 and I will be applying to best 6 in total.
I have you guys and I can't afford to make any silly mistakes. I want you to come up with the best 4/6 having in mind that my focus is direct PhD with full funding.

Please treat urgent as my test day is in 2days time.
Thanks God bless.
Consider sending scores to: One out of UT Austin and GATECH (based on your interests). UFlorida, UTK, WVU (IMO, this way you'll spread the risk) any other can be the 6th.
This is based on my limited knowledge of the aforementioned schools, check gradcafe for admission/funding prospects.

Matinoh:
my profile.
CGPA : 4.14/5
GRE : Preparing
TOEFL: Preparing
Certification: None
Major: petroleum Engineering
Prospective courses for MS: data science and big data, cyber security, data analytics.
I want to swerve alittle bit from petroleum engineering into any subdiscipline of ICT.
Please I need serious advice( pertaining the course drifting) & recommendations on schools with low tuition in The Us, Canada, Germany and UK. schools with funding and Graduate assistantship is also welcome.. I don't intend coming back to Nigeria. Thanks alot
Hi Matinoh, good choices you have up there. Consider adding Industrial engineering to the list.
Some departments have data science/ analytics/ Operations research as program tracks under Industrial engineering. Check out this link for some data science programs in USA/ Canada: https://www.kdnuggets.com/2017/11/best-masters-data-science-analytics-us-canada.html/2

For UK: Check out the ongoing PTDF UK scholarship, some selected programs offer Data science.
Lastly, consider applying to a straight PhD for more assurance of funding. Seeing that you're coming from a different major, the challenge here is proving to the adcoms that you've got what it takes to be successful. Some of the reqs are Calculus I & II, Linear Algebra, Programming (Python or R), etc. Check program pages and ask the program contacts in your first mail if your background will be a problem (It shouldn't).
All the best!

A lot of people on that thread just want to immigrate. If they were that serious about getting into the US legitimately, most will be here trying to get information needed to ace the needed tests to get funding.

So this year, I reapplied to 5 Ph.D. programs
1. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (pending)
2. The University of Utah (rejected)
3. Kansas State University(accepted with full funding)
4. The University of Alabama (accepted, no funding. I did not bother to ask for any.)
5. College of William and Mary(accepted with full funding, being considered for fellowship)

Also, to "avoid stories that touch", I applied to Georgia Southern (MSc Mathematics and I was accepted with a funded GTA position)

I thank God for the courage to try one more time and I pray that everyone finds a reason to believe in themselves and keep pushing.

Special thanks to the extraordinary persons that supported me throughout this journey; Sirriddy(you are just too much), divabiola, jaybiz007, Scholastica16, MsNas, dramaka). Thank you guys for being more than friends.

Here's my profile.

CGPA : 3.28/5

TOEFL: Preparing
Certification: Cisco Certification Network Associate CCNA
Major: Telecommunication Engineering
Prospective courses for MS: Telecommunication Engineering, Network Engineering
Advice and recommendations are highly appreciated!
Yes Powerprep will do. By diagnostic, I meant any full test that will simulate test day scenario.
Download "Yocket" on Playstore/ appstore, input your profile, then search for schools.
Decisions are decentralized-numerous factors determine admission/funding. All the best man!

Now my question: To calculate ones GPA on a 4 point scale emphasis is usually placed on the last 60 hrs. What about we in Engineering that our IT is usually 2nd semester in 400l which obviously fall within the last 60hrs, are we going to include it in our GPA calculation?

Also please I need links to full length practice test aside Power prep 2.

I learnt SIWES/ IT will be evaluated as well.

Can't find the links right now. Google: Manhattan, Kaplan, Princeton, Peterson practice tests. Also check greprep club. Someone shared the Chinese one some pages back… All the best!
