GistMore12: Seventy-two (72 ) graduates of the Federal University, Otuoke, in Bayelsa, have bagged first-class degrees.
72 students bag first class at Federal University, Otuoke, maiden convocation Graduate. The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Seth Accra Jaja, disclosed this on Saturday at the maiden convocation ceremony of the university.
He said that 462 other students graduated with the second class upper division, adding that a total of 1121 students graduated with various divisions.
While congratulating the graduates, Prof. Jaja admonished them to learn how to be innovative and live an independent life.
The VC urged them to endeavour to pursue various entrepreneurial opportunities to be self-employed.
Jaja commended the Federal Government for its efforts in delivering quality tertiary education to the teeming youths of the country.
He announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) have approved an additional 16 programmes of the institution, thereby bring the total programmes offered by the school to 28 at the moment, NAN reported.
He said: “It is worthy to recall that between 2011/2012 and 2015/2016 academic sessions, the university ran 12 academic programmes.
“This situation limited the number of prospective students offered admission into the university.
“On assumption of duty as Vice Chancellor in 2016, the first major challenge I faced was how to bridge this need gap.
“This challenge was resolved when the National Universities Commission, after due resources verification exercise, graciously approved 16 additional programmes.
“Bringing the total number of programmes in the university to 28, this singular achievement helped to minimise our challenge of meeting the university’s social responsibility of granting admission to deserving Nigerian youths.
“However, those programmes that were not having full accreditation status before my assumption of duty, now have full accreditation.
“With the rising profile of Federal University, Otuoke and without prejudice, non-conformist staff and students to the standard of the university culture and those who possess questionable scholarly credentials will be reclassified and shown the way out.
“Apart from enthroning academic discipline, our university has excelled in several research breakthroughs as also contained in our university compendium,” he said.
In his remarks, the best graduating student, Mr Stephen Chukwunonso, said with hard work one can be the best he or she desires.
He urged other students to be focused, disciplined and committed, adding that reading at night will always help you to understand when you read.

The group have been jailed as the result of a joint investigation between the Met’s Specialist Crime South and Kent Police’s Operation Raptor. Operation Raptor teams focus on disrupting and dismantling criminals linked to county lines, drugs, and the exploitation of vulnerable people.
Between August 2018 and November 2018 officers identified the gang were running five County Lines.

newsvib: Micheal Anifowoshe, who is known to be a painter has been summoned before Ikeja Magistrates court for stealing Five Cartons of Noodles and five cartons of spaghetti.
Micheal is said to be 26 years old and lives at No. 10, Oluwalogbo St, ta-Maga, Ikorodu
It was gathered that he is being tried for conspiracy and stealing which he didn't actually deny.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Akhaluode, made the court to understand that Micheal committed the crime on April 24th at about 11pm in Ikeja. He also added that he stole five cartons of noodles valued N21,000 and five cartons of spaghetti valued N14,000, the property of Mr Ahmed Salami
“Salami was trying to repair his faulty car when Anifowoshe and his accomplices walked up to him, distracted his attention and stole the items.
“The complaint raised an alarm and with the help of some passersby the defendant was arrested,” the prosecutor said.
The Magistrate, O.O. Fagbohun, granted the defendant a bail of N20,000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case until May 24.

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed worry over the delay by President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the new minimum wage bill.
The bill, which seeks the payment of N30,000 as minimum wage to civil servants, was passed by the National Assembly and is awaiting the assent of the President. In a new interview Peter Ozo-Eson, the NLC General Secretary, said the President has held onto the bill for too long.
He said Nigerian workers are eagerly anticipating the approval of the bill by the President, as it will improve the standard of living in the country. “We had thought that given all processes before arriving at that point, the long delays in setting up a tripartite committee, the long period before the tripartite committee to now finalise and all the debates that had gone on, the president would have signed the bill into law,” he said.
Ozo-Eson, however, told the President to sign the bill before the celebration of the 2019 May Day, an annual day to celebrate workers in Nigeria.
He said: “We thought that this was something President would assent to very quickly, because as we had earlier indicated, we would want this implementation to be before May.
Our position is to call on Mr. President to, without further delay, assent to the New National Minimum Wage Bill, so that workers can start to enjoy the new minimum wage implementation before May Day.”
