they represent different shifting patterns.
s= sports shifting- cant remember the patter n lazy to google but d car shifts at more prolonged RPMs as though ur racing with a manual
L= long drive= doesnt leave current gear. most likely wen u are ascending hills n u need more power on the same gear.
the D3,D4 and so on are all similarly related to the aforementioned.

Sorry, but I just want to ask for your expert opinion as well. I drive a 1999 Mazda 626 sedan(automatic) but I noticed recently dat whenever am on a long distance driving, it starts jerking on high speed. Called my mechanic's attention to this issue but he said d engine mountain had to b changed coz they were old. We did dat and I was travelling with my car to ogun state, I was close to Abeokuta, then it started jerking again, this time it was more serious compared to d earlier occurence. It wasn't changing from gear 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 without d engine overworkin on a particular gear level first. Thought it was d transmission fluid, but it still behaved d same way after changing d fluid. But if I park and allow it to cool, then it works well until I get to highway again on high speed. Pls what do u think I shld do, thanks

very familiar and seems common with mazda but i have to follow procedures here. is the MIL on? if yes then lets get the car car scanned first to pull out codes. but 1 thing u failed to mention is if it finally goes off wen it starts jerking or continues jerking all d way. ive used this mazda 626 for abt 2yrs now and know almost anything and everything abt dis car. i'll be glad to help. i love mazdas too

pls im tryna help a colleague solve transmission issues. he drove his odyssey(03) from festac to ajah and along the way his D light started flashing but without deterioration of performance. on getting to destination the blinking stopped. he parked and went in only to return 2hrs later and transmission failure. the transmission(torque converter) wouldnt engage on P, D or R. the car woud jus rev with no engagement from tranny. he called me to inspect n i found out dat his dip stick popped out most likely wen it was flashing D most likely cos ATF was boiling and pressure was high and i could see some oil splash around engine body but the tranny still had enough oil in it. only little spilled out. i got the car scanned and got codes P0141 and P0135 which were pointing to oxygen sensor. i have not made any change on dis vehicle here but i decided to come here for some help first beause i believe dis is a sensor issue cos a mechanical device doesnt just pack up without showing degradation of performance as symptoms only electronic devices like sensors i believe can fail like dis without notice.
pls i need expert comments and ideas.

You are doing the same thing the OP has just been advised against.
Have your car scanned first or else risk spending 200k on a replacement transmission minus labor only to find out when you do listen that a 10k sensor would have sorted you out.

Do the scan before anything else and post the result.

ok! i can do the scan for him but the truth is some symptoms are quite obvious and 1 can tell even without a scan but a scan should come 1st especially wen it wont cost much.

You know, get it to the workshop, strip some parts off and hit you with a huge repair bill.
Then you cant say no, as the car is already at the workshop, with some components off.

Since we are talking about transmissions here i need help. i drive a Nissan Maxima SE 2000 model. When i put the lever to drive the gear engages smoothly from the 1st to the 2nd gear but when its time to change from 2nd to 3rd the engine revvs before the gear engages the 3rd, 3rd to 4th is also smooth. This has been on for a while but 6months later my TCS off and SLIP lights came on. Anyone have an idea what exactly could be wrong and can i have an idea of the cost to fix such? Thanks.

e get tyre and engine? abi u no see say na autos be dis section? what is wrong with nigerians and simple instruction? na people like u go dey pass 1-way when it is clearly stated otherwise!!!

there is a big issue here cos 1. u cannot account for exactly what and what the mechanic changed
2. somthing fundamental must have happened before u had to initially change any parts.
so to solve this issue we need info and u will have to do some home work.
1. try to remember what happened to the car before it started jerking, going off and co
2. u need to be precise on exactly what the mechanic has changed
3. how long have u used this car in naija before it started behaving funny?
4. if brainbox packs up shortly then im sure it should be sending codes to the PCM. is ur check engine light on?
5.then there is also possibility of a short crcuit on hardcurrent along the wire harness.
all this info will really help to solve ypur issue forever

i can help you pull out the codes. you need to pull out the freeze frame data before clearing the memory the u allow the car to send persisting codes again. this way ur problem is half solved. you also need to take some live data reading. call me for more help 08034688034
