GitHub has revealed a number of users’ accounts have been accessed by an attacker reusing email addresses and passwords obtained from other internet services that have been compromised.

The code-hosting platform, which claims millions of users around the world, revealed a series of “unauthorized attempts” to log-in to many accounts on GitHub.com on Tuesday evening. “This appears to be the result of an attacker using lists of email addresses and passwords from other online services that have been compromised in the past, and trying them on GitHub accounts,” explained Shawn Davenport VP of Security at GitHub, in a blog post.

With the SIM reset, the person responsible was able to receive text messages intended for Mckesson and therefore bypass the two-factor authentication the activist used to keep his account secure.

Goes to show that two-factor authentication is only as strong as the second factor — and with Verizon it would appear your phone is not a strong factor. Scary.

Another day, another Data Breach! Now, Russia's biggest social networking site VK.com is the latest in the line of historical data breaches targeting social networking websites.

The same hacker who previously sold data dumps from MySpace, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and Fling.com, is now selling more than 100 Million VK.com records for just 1 Bitcoin (approx. US$580).

The database contains information like full names (first names and last names), email addresses, plain-text passwords, location information, phone numbers and, in some cases, secondary email addresses.
