Bloomberg is reporting that the new iPhone will have an updated home button similar to the MacBook's Force Touch trackpad. Instead of a physical click, the new button will trigger a series of vibrations under the surface. The reasons for this are a little unclear – it could provide new functionality, or simply serve to save some space under the hood.

Gaming / 'pokemon Go' Invades Southeast Asia by michellhilton(m): 11:50pm On Aug 07, 2016

Indonesia, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are among the 15. Twitter exploded in rejoice at the news.

First launched in the U.S. about a month ago, the game has become a worldwide sensation, racking up more than 100 million downloads. It uses augmented reality to make virtual monsters seem to appear in the real world, but there are safety concerns – even reports of accidents – as players go after the monsters in streets.

Gaming / Xbox One S Is The Right Console For 2016’s Messy 4K by michellhilton(m): 5:11pm On Aug 07, 2016
Sony and Microsoft are both trying to push console gaming into 4K, and the latest revision of the Xbox is doing that the right way for the current television market.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the Xbox One S. This is a slimmer Xbox One that can upscale game content to 4K and can play 4K video like Ultra HD Blu-ray films. It starts at $300 for a 500GB model — although the $400 2TB version is the only one on store shelves right now. I’ve already reviewed it, and I think it’s the go-to Xbox One model for anyone looking to get a next-gen system. But, more than that, the Xbox One S is a savvy move from Microsoft to help settle a 4K TV business that is still a realm primarily for early adopters.

4K is a new video standard that comprises four-times the number of pixels of 1080p, which is sometimes called “full HD.” Between now and next holiday, Sony and Microsoft will have three different “4K” consoles. The Xbox One S is out now, and Sony is planning to launch the PlayStation 4 Neo sometime in the near future. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in June, Microsoft also revealed that it will launch the Xbox One Scorpio in 2017. The Neo and the Scorpio will both feature major horsepower improvements aimed at delivering improved visuals rendered at a 4K resolution. But while Sony may jump straight to the upgrade with Neo, Microsoft may benefit from launching the Xbox One S first.

Gaming / Pokémon Go Developer Plans To Fix ‘bug’ That Makes Creatures Run Away More Often by michellhilton(m): 1:03pm On Aug 05, 2016
If you’ve played Pokémon Go from the beginning, you’ve probably noticed that those little buggers are getting harder to catch in recent days. Well, it turns out that is a glitch.

Developer Niantic took to Twitter today to confirm to players that they aren’t all paranoid and that pocket monsters are harder to catch due to a bug in the game. The studio revealed that this glitch causes a number of problems. It makes your throws less accurate, it omits the XP bonuses for certain throws, and it increases the odds that certain monsters will escape. Pokémon Go is one of the most popular and highest-grossing games ever made for iOS or Android devices. It is making $10 million every day across the globe, but it could quickly lose that momentum if it frustrates and enrages players. That could completely destroy its retention and engagement, which are often design aspects that are far more crucial than getting players to spend money in the $36.9 billion mobile-gaming business.

Foreign Affairs / 'traitors' Cemetery' Reserved For Turkey's Coup Plotters by michellhilton(m): 8:00pm On Jul 29, 2016
Captain Mehmet Karabekir's body was not washed before burial. Nobody recited prayers from the Koran before he was laid to rest in a hastily dug hole near an animal shelter, denied all Muslim rites.

He is among the dozens of Turkish soldiers accused of trying to overthrow President Tayyip Erdogan and the government in a failed military coup this month, his fate a sign of the fury felt over a night of bloodletting that killed more than 240 people.

Karabekir lies with no tombstone next to three other two-meter deep holes prepared with a mechanical digger. He was the first to be buried in a plot of land of about a quarter of an acre sectioned off last weekend in a disused part of a construction site on the eastern outskirts of Istanbul.

Science/Technology / Tim Cook Is Surprisingly Confident About The Promise Of Augmented Reality by michellhilton(m): 5:31pm On Jul 27, 2016
Today on Apple’s quarterly earnings call with financial analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook spent some time talking up augmented reality (AR). Apple doesn’t have any existing hardware or software for that technology at the moment, so it was surprising to hear Cook talk about the subject.

He brought it up in the context of the Pokémon Go mobile game (or, as he called it, “PokéMan“), in response to a question about the business value of Apple Pay. In case you’ve been living under a giant Charmander and you haven’t had the pleasure of playing it, Pokémon Go is different from many mobile games because it superimposes Pokémon creatures on top of whatever is in front of you, using the camera on your mobile device. So it looks like the characters exist in real life and you have to catch them. This is an implementation of AR, and you can approve mobile payments for things like PokéCoins with Apple Pay.
