It's not every day that Mr. Bean makes an appearance in the Wall Street Journal's commodities coverage.

And that might not even be the strangest finding in the Journal's investigationinto a massive pile of aluminum that allegedly just sat there, unused, in the Mexican desert for years.

To start, some background: China's growing industrial sector has been hard on the aluminum producers in the United States. In 2000 there were 23 smelters operating nationwide, now there are only five.

So when an aluminum executive named Jeff Henderson got wind of a giant stockpile of Chinese aluminum just below the U.S border with Mexico, he decided to commission a plane to check it out.

Six percent of the world's aluminum, worth some $2 billion and enough to make 77 billion beer cans, according to the Journal's fascinating report.

The revelation led to tensions between U.S. trade authorities and China, as U.S. industry executives insist that the metal is linked to Liu Zhongtian, who runs China Zhongwang Holdings, an enormous industrial aluminum company.

U.S. industry officials allege the metal got there as part of a scheme to evade trade restrictions. The idea was to move aluminum through Mexico into the U.S. where it could benefit from provisions in the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"These things have nothing to do with me," Liu told the Journal, although the results of the investigation cast doubt on that claim.

Aluminum manufacturing is subsidized in China, and so Chinese firms were able to undercut U.S. producers; the United States responded by setting up tariffs to make domestic aluminum more attractive.

Routing Chinese aluminum through Mexico was a way to get around those tariffs.

Things went awry when a one of Liu's alleged business partners Po-Chi "Eric" Shen, started to gain attention over some of his erratic practices, which the Journal report highlighted and included spending fortunes on dubious expenses like $70 million worth of red diamonds and rare Ferraris.

The relationship allegedly deteriorated quickly — Shen made headlines in 2014 when he wrecked Liu's sports car while vacationing in Italy, and was rescued by Rowan Atkinson, of Mr. Bean fame.

The metal may never make it to the United States, in fact there are currently plans to ship it back to Asia, this time Vietnam.

Russia and the US reached an agreement of peace to Syria with a ceasefire throughout the country between government forces and rebel groups scheduled to begin next week. Speaking in Geneva on Saturday morning, the US Secretary of State John Kerry said the agreement would be a "turning point" for the war-torn country, if implemented, and suggested it could also ultimately lead to the removal of Bashar President al Assad.

Apple's virtual assistant Siri is to become a more powerful tool in iOS 10, thanks to the voice-controlled helper's ability to better manage third-party apps.

When iOS 10 hits iPhones and iPads, Apple says Siri will capable of a much broader range of tasks, be they messaging someone on LinkedIn or making a payment using Square Cash.

Apple announced this broader integration with third party apps at its developer conference in June, but with iOS 10's release on the horizon the Wall Street Journal gained an early demo of how these changes will allow Siri to control mobile payments, image search, and messaging apps.

Early apps to join Siri include WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Square Cash, Slack, and lesser-known apps such as Looklive and The Roll, according to the report.

The WSJ reporter told Siri: "Siri, send Catherine $20 for lunch with cash", which initiated a transfer using Square Cash that could be authorised by pressing the Touch ID home button.

Thanks to LinkedIn's integration, it's possible to say, for example: "Hey Siri, send Jim Gonzalez a message in LinkedIn", which triggers a direct message to the contact via the Microsoft-owned service. This expands on Siri's current capability to dictate a message using Apple's Messages.

Ireland should recover to € 13 billion Apple in back taxes, the European Commission approved the withdrawal to the company's coffers. After a three-year investigation, it was concluded that the Irish tax benefits granted to the company was illegal. (...) Intel's recent pledge to expand its business making chips for others highlights its ambition to snatch chip orders for Apple's popular iPhones from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. as early as 2018, industry experts said.

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker by revenue, announced earlier this month that it will license technology from British mobile chip designer ARM with the aim of securing more business from smartphone companies. LG Electronics will become the first smartphone company to adopt Intel chips following the ARM deal.

While Intel still dominates in the faltering personal computer market, it has been struggling in the mobile era with ARM virtually monopolizing smartphone chip technology.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, has thrived partly from its close partnership with ARM during the rapid rise of smartphones over the past decade, but Intel's new alliance with the British innovator could be a game changer.

"TSMC could face tough competition as soon as 2018 or 2019 as Intel is likely to gain orders from Apple by then," Samuel Wang, a veteran semiconductor analyst at research company Gartner, told the Nikkei Asian Review. "Intel has begun to engage with Apple and it aims to grab one or two top-tier customers from TSMC."

Intel fumbled in its previous attempts to grow its foundry business, where it makes chips for others, as the U.S. company prioritized production of PC and server chips for its own use, according to Wang.

But that could change this time around, he said, as Intel now sees its foundry business as a key source of new revenue, which can be used to invest in future technologies.

A senior Taiwanese chip industry executive shared Wang's views. "Intel is definitely the most formidable challenger for TSMC," the executive told the NAR.

"There is no rivalry between Apple and Intel so it's really likely that Apple could shift some orders there. The move is also in line with Washington's policy to encourage U.S. companies to make more products at home," the person said.

Intel declined to comment. Apple did not immediately return a emailed request seeking comment.

Apple today released iOS version 9.3.5, which contains patches for security vulnerabilities that exist in earlier versions of Apple’s mobile operating system. Today’s update follow the release of iOS 9.3.4 earlier this month.

Mobile security startup Lookout says it discovered the vulnerabilities in association with the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab and have collaborated with Apple to fix them. Lookout encourages people to install today’s update to prevent attacks from what the company calls Trident.

“The attack sequence, boiled down, is a classic phishing scheme: send text message, open web browser, load page, exploit vulnerabilities, install persistent software to gather information,” Lookout and Citizen Lab said in a blog post. “This, however, happens invisibly and silently, such that victims do not know they’ve been compromised.”

Trident is part of a piece of malware named Pegasus from a company called NSO, and the United Arab Emirates appears to have tried to use Pegasus to attack the iPhone of human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor, who is based in the Emirates, the organizations said. Also Citizen Lab believes “state-sponsored actors” attacked a Mexican journalist with the NSO software.

iPhone and iPad users have long requested that Twitter add a dark mode to its iOS app and today it’s finally happening.

Twitter’s ‘night mode’ feature was introduced earlier this year on Android, and today Twitter shared that the feature is rolling out to iOS as well. Hopefully that means both iPhone and iPad (and add streaming to my feature request list next if so).

Last week, a group calling itself "The Shadow Brokers" published what it said was a set of NSA "cyber weapons," including some working exploits for the Internet's most crucial network infrastructure, apparently stolen from the agency's Equation Group in 2013.

Well, talking about the authenticity of those exploits, The Intercept published Friday a new set of documents from the Edward Snowden archive, which confirms that the files leaked by the Shadow Brokers contain authentic NSA software and hacking tools used to secretly infect computers worldwide.

As I previously mentioned, the leaked documents revealed how the NSA was systematically spying on customers of big technology companies like Cisco, Fortinet, and Juniper for at least a decade.

Google today launched Google Duo, a one-to-one video calling app for Android and iOS. You can download Duo from Google Play and Apple’s App Store, though you may have to wait a bit as this is a gradual rollout — “it will be live worldwide in the next few days.”

Apple today released the fifth version of the public beta for iOS 10, the next version of its mobile operating system. Today’s release comes one week after the fourth public beta became available.

Compared with iOS 9, the new OS features redesigned Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Maps, and Photos apps, along with a new Home app for controlling Internet-connected devices. Apple isn’t saying what’s in today’s release, but generally these updates fix bugs and add new features.

This public beta update can be installed on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, fourth-generation iPad, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, and sixth-generation iPod Touch.

If you’d like to install the newest public beta, you can open up Settings, hit Software Update, and hit Download and Install. To install, you’ll need to have your iOS device connected to a power source or have at least 50 percent battery life. You’ll also need to be part of the Apple Beta Software Program. The complete version of iOS 10 will be coming out for everyone this fall — when Apple will also likely debut new iPhones — but if you want to preview it, these public betas are your chance.

I'm not an expert or anything but I'm pretty sure that would constitute an act of war (and probably legally ruled a suicide), if the Turkish government or any faction in a hypothetical civil war were to try it.
