Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced late Sunday night the start of the operation to liberate Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, from the Islamic State more than two years after it fell to the terror group.

"The hour has come and the moment of great victory is near," al-Abadi said in a speech on state TV, surrounded by the Iraqi armed forces' top commanders. "I announce today the start of the operation to liberate the province of Nineveh."

The operation is the largest deployment of Iraqi soldiers since the US invasion in 2003, and it is being bolstered by airpower from a 60-country anti-ISIS coalition.

The liberation of Mosul has been the linchpin of the Obama administration's plan to defeat ISIS in Iraq, though Washington has expressed concern over Baghdad's plans to move forward with the Mosul operation this year.

Hillary Clinton sent an email to her campaign chairman John Podesta in 2014, who was then-counselor to President Barack Obama, that said Saudi Arabia and Qatar are both giving financial and logistical support to the Islamic State and other extremist Sunni groups, according to a recent Wikileaks release.

Clinton sent the email on August 17, 2014 to Podesta. It was an eight-point plan to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Clinton’s email said that the United States should support Kurdish forces on the ground with U.S. military advisers and avoid the use of a conventional ground operation.

“While this military/para-military operation is moving forward, we need to use our diplomatic and more traditional intelligence assets to bring pressure on the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and other radical Sunni groups in the region,” Clinton wrote.

The former secretary of state added: “This effort will be enhanced by the stepped up commitment in the [Kurdish Regional Government]. The Qataris and Saudis will be put in a position of balancing policy between their ongoing competition to dominate the Sunni world and the consequences of serious U.S. pressure.”

Google has annouced a new supercharged version of its Chromecast streaming player, which offers higher video quality and a corresponding price bump.

The new "Chromecast Ultra" comes with support for 4K resolution video, HDR10, and Dolby Vision, and costs $69 – an additional $35 over the regular Chromecast that streams in 1080p.

In late September, Chromecast's main competitor Roku announced its new lineup of media streaming devices. There are now five new Roku streaming boxes to chose from with varying features, one of which has been dubbed a "Chromecast killer." The new $30 Roku Express has similar features as Google's Chromecast, like 1080p streaming and app support, for $5 less.

But Chromecast Ultra will compete with Roku's higher-priced products, like the Roku Premiere ($80), and Roku Premiere Plus ($100). The Roku Premiere supports 4K, but you have to spend the extra for the Premiere Plus to get the HDR10 support.

It's good to remember, however, that with both 4K and HDR (HDR10 and Dolby Vision), the content actually available is limited, though they will likely be more important moving forward.

Malware targeting the Internet of Things (IoT) has come of age and the number of attack groups focusing on IoT has multiplied over the past year. 2015 was a record year for IoT attacks, with eight new malware families emerging. More than half of all IoT attacks originate from China and the US. High numbers of attacks are also emanating from Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Vietnam.

Poor security on many IoT devices makes them soft targets and often victims may not even know they have been infected. Attackers are now highly aware of lax IoT security and many pre-program their malware with commonly used and default passwords.

IoT attacks have long been predicted, with plenty of speculation about possible hijacking of home automation and home security devices. However, attacks to date have taken a different shape. Attackers tend to be less interested in the victim and the majority wish to hijack a device to add it to a botnet, most of which are used to perform distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Just this month the security vendor Sucuri reported on a large DDoS attack launched from 3 different types of botnets (CCTV botnet, home router botnet and compromised web servers). While not commonly seen in the past, attacks originating from multiple IoT platforms simultaneously may be seen more often in the future, as the amount of the embedded devices connected to the Internet rises.
