Science/Technology / Facebook Doesn’t Really Care About The News Industry by michellhilton(m): 2:13pm On Jul 02, 2016
The idea that Facebook was going to “save” the news industry, or even that Facebook traffic is something that news organizations should bank on for the future, is just goofy. Facebook’s first goal is to keep users using Facebook — as many users as possible for as much time as possible. If videos of cats walking around on two legs are more popular than analyses of the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the EU, well, that’s what they’re going to prioritize. Secondarily, Facebook’s goal is to monetize the aggregate attention from priority one. That’s it. So, going forward, news organizations are going to have to pay more for worse placement in Facebook news feeds.

Crime / Global Terrorism, Crime, And Sanctions Database World-check Leaked Online by michellhilton(m): 9:55pm On Jun 29, 2016
The dataset contains 2.2 million records on “heightened risk individuals and organizations.”

A database used by global banks, governments, law firms, and intelligence agencies to identify suspects related to terrorism, crime, corruption, and other wrongdoings leaked online.

Chris Vickery, a security researcher at the software firm MacKeeper, recently discovered an exposed version of the Thomson Reuters’ World-Check database, which contains 2.2 million records on “heightened risk individuals and organizations,” he wrote Tuesday in a post on Reddit. Vickery said the copy he found dated to mid-2014.

“No hacking was involved in my acquisition of this data,” he wrote, mentioning that the set appeared to be “sourced from publicly available materials.” He added that he “would call it more of a leak than anything.”

Science/Technology / Satya Nadella Has Made Great Strides With Microsoft's Former Rival by michellhilton(m): 6:27pm On Jun 27, 2016
At Red Hat tech conference taking place in San Francisco, the maker of open source software and Microsoft showed a lot of progress to their landmark partnership announced in November.

Red Hat, which makes a popular version of the open source operating system Linux, was once feared and hated by Microsoft. Microsoft most important customers — big companies — flocked to Linux as an alternative to Windows Server.

And that used to be an expensive problem for Microsoft. Not only does Microsoft charge companies to use Windows Server, but Windows Server also means a company is more likely to buy other Microsoft/Windows products, such as its database SQL Server.

Science/Technology / A Floating School In Nigeria Has Collapsed After Getting Battered by michellhilton(m): 11:26pm On Jun 24, 2016
One of the most innovative schools in the world is now little more than floating pile of driftwood.

After getting pummeled by a heavy rain storm in early June, the Makoko Floating School - located just outside Lagos, the country's capital - now sits in the lagoon as a crumpled version of its former self.

The collapse strips the local community of its meeting center and space for elementary education, both desperately needed in the poor region.

Foreign Affairs / It Would Be Difficult To Continue Cameroff by michellhilton(m): 1:00pm On Jun 24, 2016
It would be hard to keep David Cameron. With so much going on, it would be difficult for him to lead the country down a road that he does not agree, especially when his every move is criticized.

The alternative would have been a power struggle, but he would inevitably lose. He may well leave the ship while there is still a lifeboat. And that's what he did!

I do not blame him, he's probably already done enough.

Nobody wants to have the potential collapse of the European Union and the United Kingdom in his political record. Even with an unlikely possibility.

Science/Technology / Pluto May Harbor A Liquid Ocean by michellhilton(m): 1:51pm On Jun 23, 2016
The underground ocean that produced some of the stunning features on Pluto's surface may still be splashing around beneath the crust today.

If Pluto's subsurface ocean had frozen over completely, it would have formed highly pressurized ice that would have caused the dwarf planet to shrink, according to new research. The canyons and valleys on Pluto seem to have formed as the dwarf planet swelled up, rather than as it shrank, indicating that a liquid ocean most likely sits beneath the thick ice crust today, researchers said in the study.

Science/Technology / The Iphone 8 Can Not Come With A Home Button by michellhilton(m): 2:27pm On Jun 22, 2016
Apple can completely remove the home button from the iPhone (let's just call it the iPhone 8 for now), according to a report in the Wall Street Journal published on Tuesday.

The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, said the iPhone 8 could have an edge OLED screen edge with the embedded fingerprint sensor, making unnecessary home button.

We'll have to wait until we approach the launch of the iPhone to see if this speculation gains strength, but we are very confident that you should not expect any significant design changes coming to the iPhone 7 this year.

Technology Market / Apple Won't Do Major Iphone Redesigns Every Two Years Anymore by michellhilton(m): 8:12pm On Jun 21, 2016
The new iPhone coming out this fall is going to look a lot like the iPhones currently on sale.

Apple is moving away from its traditional two-year upgrade cycle, in which a complete redesign of the handset is released every two years with subtle improvements released in a so-called S model in the years between, according to The Wall Street Journal.

That means that the completely redesigned iPhone 7 that many were expecting Apple to release as its next big phone this fall will actually be a more incremental update. Ultimately, it will be similar to the current iPhone 6S.

Technology Market / Apple Lost The Patent Dispute In The Chinese Market Encourages Rivals by michellhilton(m): 11:12am On Jun 20, 2016
The loss of Apple in a patent dispute in the Chinese market can mean more legal problems with their local rivals.

While Apple calls to keep their best-selling handsets in the Chinese market, this could help to a growing wave of lawsuits, according to Counterpoint Research.

The decision is the latest headache for Apple in China, where it already faces aggressive rivals and a slowing economy in its biggest market outside the US.

Education / Who Is The Richest Person In All Of History? by michellhilton(m): 1:28pm On Jun 19, 2016
Worth $400+ Billion

Never heard of him? Don’t worry, outside of the German state of Bavaria this name won’t ring too many bells. But according to American historian Greg Steinmetz he was the richest man in history.

Everyone thinks of the Swiss Guard being this elite unit who will give their lifes for the pope. That is true today, but it didnt’t start out that way. Back in 1506 Fugger hired Swiss mercenaries who were famous for their military capabilities. They weren’t hired for honor or because they were devout catholics. They were hired by Fugger so they could defend one of his biggest investments which came under attack in Rome. It was risk assurance - nothing more.

Technology Market / Cryptocurrency Hacker Says Stolen $53 Million Is Legally His by michellhilton(m): 8:46pm On Jun 18, 2016
One day after $53 million abruptly disappeared from an experimental cryptocurrency project, a note appearing to be from the attacker has surfaced on PasteBin, claiming that the money drained from the system is now legally his. The attacker withdrew the money by exploiting a contract bug in the code of the DAO (or Decentralized Autonomous Organization), a collective investment fund that uses the Ethereum cryptocurrency.

"I have carefully examined the code of The DAO and decided to participate after finding the feature where splitting is rewarded with additional ether," the note reads. "I have made use of this feature and have rightfully claimed 3,641,694 ether, and would like to thank the DAO for this reward."

"My law firm has advised me that my action is fully compliant with United States criminal and tort law."

It’s unclear whether this legal reasoning holds up, but it’s not entirely unprecedented. The DAO is structured like a legal contract, and while the attack certainly wasn’t an intended use of that contract, it proceeded according to the contract’s pre-established rules. Cornell cryptographer Emil Gün Sirer wrote yesterday that draining the funds may not even qualify as a hack.

Science/Technology / Fighting ISIS With An Algorithm, Physicists Try To Predict Attacks by michellhilton(m): 10:06am On Jun 18, 2016
After Orlando and San Bernardino and Paris, there is new urgency to understand the signs that can precede acts of terrorism. And with the Islamic State’s prolific use of social media, terrorism experts and government agencies continually search for clues in posts and Twitter messages that appear to promote the militants’ cause.

A physicist may not seem like an obvious person to study such activity. But for months, Neil Johnson, a physicist at the University of Miami, led a team that created a mathematical model to sift order from the chaotic pro-terrorism online universe.

In a study published Thursday in the journal Science, Dr. Johnson and Miami colleagues searched for pro-Islamic State posts each day from mid-2014 until August 2015, mining mentions of beheadings and blood baths in multiple languages on Vkontakte, a Russia-based social media service that is the largest European equivalent to Facebook. Ultimately, they devised an equation that tries to explain the activity of Islamic State sympathizers online and might, they say, eventually help predict attacks that are about to happen.

Health / Because Everyone Hates Monsanto? by michellhilton(m): 1:26am On Jun 18, 2016
Why everyone hates Monsanto? To begin Monsanto is the world's leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate, sold under the brand name Roundup. Therefore Monsanto is the hallmark of death.

The way there are practically only transgenic pesticides, or producing transgenic themselves, agents harmful insects. Monsanto is responsible for about 90% of GM crops in the world. Furthermore, there is also modified plants by Monsanto Roundup Ready, which have a higher tolerance to Roundup, it while resisting weeds, for example, do not resist. Thus, farmers can apply pesticides without damaging the crop, which increases herbicide sales.

Business / What Are Some Companies Making Tons Of Money But Are Unknown To Most Peo by michellhilton(m): 11:12pm On Jun 17, 2016
Renaissance Technologies, founded by Jim Simons in 1982, is a quantitative hedge fund whose Medallion Fund (it’s most exclusive) averaged a 71.8% return 1994–2014.

Simons routinely hires some of the worlds best mathematicians and scientists to work at his company for 7 figure salaries. I think they only have a couple MBAs working there. Everything they do is obviously top secret but one thing we do know is that they make the vast majority of their money from high frequency trading. There are no humans involved in the trading process at any point - only computers.

Investment / How Did Japan Become Wealthy? by michellhilton(m): 2:29pm On Jun 17, 2016
Fukuzawa Yukichi graces the 10,000 yen note in Japan even today. He and other great minds like him translated Western classics of politics and economics, analyzed their meaning critically, and proposed making a deal with the West that would allow Japan to maintain its independence. He was critical of the West but he saw the need to compete at their level to avoid being victims of their less noble instincts. As he wrote:

Robbery and murder are the worst of human crimes; but in the West there are robbers and murderers. There are those who form cliques to vie for the reins of power and who, when deprived of that power, decry the injustice of it all. Even worse, international diplomacy is really based on the art of deception. Surveying the situation as a whole, all we can say is that there is a general prevalence of good over bad, but we can hardly call the situation perfect. When, several thousand years hence, the levels of knowledge and virtue of the peoples of the world will have made great progress (to the point of becoming utopian), the present condition of the nations of the West will surely seem a pitifully primitive stage. Seen in this light, civilization is an open-ended process. We cannot be satisfied with the present level of attainment of the West.
