You don't have to bring the whole of your house to school.Try to make sure you bring only what you need.A luggage box, pots, spoons, cutlery generally, toiletries, the right amount of foodstuff etc. You could even get these things in school so you won't have much to 'drag'.I advice you endeavour to travel light.EspeciaLly for those who do not have a permanent place to stay. You don't want to stay in a temporary accommodation hostel with a mountain of luggage. It can get really inconvenient You might want to go say a week early,so you'd get used to the school environment and know your way around school.you don't want to have that "freshers' look of confusion" all over your face on the first day of resumption/clearance.know the venue before hand. Also, gather as much info as possible about the clearance procedure so you'd know where to start when you get to school.Nairaland really helped me during my time.As more people get to know the first step, the queue gets longer. That's why you need to know where to start before others know. Knowing a few people online, making friends before resumption helps.it make things a lot easier. You don't want to reach school and not know anyone there. You'll be clueless trust me,that's apart from being bored of course...you won't know what to do.the guys I met on Nairaland, they were(some;still are)my family in school.so make sure you maintain a good relationship with newly admitted students online who are just like you.Met them, don't try to hide!you'll be the one to lose. However,do not be in a hurry to choose your close friends.True friends, they come with time and naturally.Take your time and most importantly You can't trust just anyone! In my naivety I felt everyone could be trusted. That was my greatest mistake and it cost me(till date).so don't rush.People will walk in and out of your life.Do not worry when this happens,it's all a part of the process.you'll get to know who your true friends are with time. ![]() Stop here I must lest I bore you |

Congratulations if you have been offered admission into one of the universities in Nigeria(or outsiDE Nigeria even).A new journey,a new phase of your life is about to begin. Leaving home for the first time invokes different feelings in different people. For some the feeling is that of happiness. For them,it is the time to explore the world,be "free",no limitations,do things they couldn't do before.Join the "happening guys" maybe etc. For some, the feeling is that of fear.they do not know what life away from home'd look/feel like.they are scared to take the step.they've heard so much about cultism, prostitution etc and all that keeps popping up in their heads are the "what ifs". For others,it's a mixture of both. Well,I wouldn't say there's no need to be terrified.in fact you should be!ok maybe I put it the wrong way but really,it's ok to be a bit scared.More like nervous.considering it's the first time that you'll be living alone, far from home. Here is my advice; Be calm!the benefits and joy of being independent, taking your own decisions and making and learning from your own mistakes should keep you calm.Don't worry!the university is not as bad as nollywood make it out to be,trust me.It can be fun.it all depends on you. If you are the type that does all the chores for your very busy mum, your worry will be how your parents are going to do without you.How is mum going to cope with work and the chores?who'll wash dad's car? Goodnews:don't worry!nature has a way of balancing things.Your mum, your dad, they'll find that balance. If all you think is "I will miss my mummy".You'll definitely miss them hehe but it'll pass. You'll learn to live without your family, time will teach you.You should know you are gradually stepping into adulthood and that more than half the time you needed to have spent with family has been spent already. From now on,you'll be with them only once in a while.two/three times a year, once a year even, as time goes on. To be continued... Check out a part of this piece here |

You find these characters in a typical nigerian hostel! ![]() 1:The pastor: Don't think about having a quiet night!he prays(kabashes) all through the night. To him, everyone else is a sinner.he needs the bulb to read the bible at that hour when you(who love to sleep with the lights out)want to sleep. ![]() 2:The nerd: he has no dress sense.always reads, hardly stays in the room.where you find him is at the school library.he has no time for anything else. The tracker/critic; He follows your every movement. What you eat, what you wear, where you go...he's always like"You take garri too much","you eat too much",when you take noodles, cereals etc,"you eat women's food".nothing except everything he does is right. The "borrower"; he borrows everything down to your boxer short. ![]() The beggar and copycat; You cook/eat shit he wants to cook and eat shit.he wants to dress like you,buy the foodstuff you buy.he brings his plate each time you're done cooking.you never eat his meal but he always wants to eat yours.he just finishes cooking but the little you want to eat catches his attention more! like a spoilt brat The "funny" guy; Makes a joke of everything in the name of being funny.uses your life style to tell jokes for the entertainment of everyone else in the room.he doesn't know where to draw the line! The dirty one: Never washes his dishes and never does the laundry, his locker is all rat droPpings, very dirty...everything about him just irritates you dust The cool guy: laughs with everyone, doesn't beg from you,he isn't nerdy,churchy...he is respectful and commands respect.even though you may want to take advantage of his "coolness" Phew! It's tough living in the hostel.you need to learn to say No and be firm when necessary. be the "Yes,yes" guy and they will walk all over you.make people respect you.I'm not saying you should change your person, but strive to be the cool guy! ![]() Add yours |
At age one, they had my hair made, I was treatedIt's ok ben. It's not The end of the world.I may not know how it feels. The fear of stigma, the pain...Just seek counselling and above all seek to be a good person. It's going to be fine ![]() |
