It seems true after all that Jega's life has been threatened. Doyin Okupe just held a press conference about why INEC should not hold election next week. Okupe claimed other elections were held in April. Okupe further claimed Nigeria is at war and election should not go ahead in the North-east due to insurgency.

You should all come to your senses. This event was deliberate and premeditated. It was all Jonathan's plan to have the North-east bogged down with war so he can remain in power beyond May 29 without election holding.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says President Goodluck Jonathan does not deserve a second term.

He told a gathering of youths at a programme titled ‘Vision of the Child’ in Lagos on Thursday, that he had 60 reasons why Jonathan should not be returned to office on February 14 when the presidential election would hold in the country.

Although Soyinka did not list the 60 reasons, he was specific on one: The April 14 abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents from their hostel in Chibok, Borno State.

The playwright, who last December described the Jonathan administration as being worse than Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, stated the President’s inability to locate and free the abducted girls represented leadership failure.

He noted that shortly after the girls were kidnapped, Jonathan failed to address the situation and went about as if nothing had happened.

Soyinka said it was, therefore, outrageous for anyone to say he was supporting the re-election of Jonathan.

He added,“It took the Jonathan government 10 days to even accept that the Chibok girls were missing. After that dereliction of duty; after that failure of leadership, after that betrayal of our future, for anyone to think or to put words in my mouth suggesting that I will vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime is a travesty of intelligence.”

Speaking on the theme, “The Road to Sambisa”, the literary icon stressed Jonathan had not only betrayed children, he had failed as a leader.

“There has been a failure of leadership. Our children whom you represent today have been betrayed,” he said.

Soyinka warned members of the public not to believe every story written about him on the social media on his purported death.

Soyinka had also in September last year accused Jonathan of shielding sponsors of terrorism.

He urged the President not to take likely, allegations by Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, that there was a group within the Central Bank of Nigeria sponsoring Boko Haram.

The Nobel laureate noted that he personally knew Davis because they both worked together during the Niger Delta militancy crisis.

Soyinka also alleged that information about a suspected financier of the terror group within the CBN was passed to Jonathan but he allegedly sat on it.

Soyinka who spoke yesterday during the presentation of 60 finalists of the Vision of the Child Competition entitled: Road to Sambisa at the Freedom Park, Lagos, also urged Nigerians to search their conscience and be objective before casting their votes for any of the candidates.

Addressing the students from various schools across the country, Professor Soyinka said: ‘’It is impossible to talk of today’s election without thinking of what happened to your colleagues, your siblings, your peers in the village called Chibok. It is not possible to think of the future of this nation in the sense of responsibility without that albatross called Chibok. Coming to the fore of our contemplation, I think that why I was being killed on the internet is probably because of this very event because those who began to advertise my death on the internet probably know already what I stand for over the election which is also why all kinds of statements have been made.’’

Soyinka used the occasion to clear the air on statements credited to him about the elections. He said ‘’I have never spoken a word about this election so anything which you read on the internet as interviews or recent statements is not mine. Don’t believe it. The reason is this, they advertised on the internet that I am dead, so why should you believe it?’’

He continued: ‘’I have at least 60 reasons for not voting for the continuation of this present government and those reasons are here

Why I will not vote for this government or encourage anybody to vote for the continuation of this present government is simply because your colleagues, numbering over 200 were kidnapped; we sent them on a mission – education, enlightenment, examination, to rub minds with their peers and they disappeared and the government of the nation failed to show leadership. So, anybody who says that I will vote or cast my vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime must be living in Sambisa forest.

‘’There has been failure of leadership. Our children who you represent today have been betrayed. They were betrayed because no action or appropriate action was taken to retrieve your colleagues who were stolen from under our noses, 10 days before this government even accepted that they were missing.”
