Politics / World’s Poorest President Bows Out Gracefully by miftah: 2:34pm On Mar 02, 2015
Can you imagine a Nigerian president riding in 28-year-old VW Beetle? Or living in his own house, forgoing the heaven-like Aso Rock? Or giving 90% of his salary to charity? Or — the most difficult one — having to leave office quietly when he could have manipulated state institutions to give him another term in office, given his popularity?

It may never be replicated in Nigeria, but it has happened in Uruguay, where the outgoing president, Jose “Pepe” Mujica, has broken all records in presidential modesty.

A former guerrilla who spent 13 years in jail, Mujica was elected president in 2010 for a five-year term. The Uruguayan constitution forbids an incumbent from seeking re-election, so he had to leave office on March 1, 2015 despite his street popularity. Of course, he made no attempts to change the constitution.

The 79-year-old socialist has handed over to his predecessor and successor — Tabaré Vázquez, who is now on his second term because of Uruguay’s peculiar law.

In an interview with BBC, Mujica recalled the years he spent in detention, two of them lying at the bottom of an old horse trough.

“I was imprisoned in solitary [confinement] so the day they put me on a sofa I felt comfortable!” Mujica joked about his status as president.

“I’ve no doubt that had I not lived through that I would not be who I am today. Prison, solitary confinement had a huge influence on me. I had to find an inner strength. I couldn’t even read a book for seven, eight years – imagine that!”

But you are not likely to say that of any Nigerian politician who had been to jail before coming to power – they seem to be overwhelmed by the flow of cash as soon as they assume office.

Yet, Mujica cannot understand the global fascination with his modest lifestyle.

“This world is crazy, crazy! People are amazed by normal things and that obsession worries me!” he said.

“All I do is live like the majority of my people, not the minority. I’m living a normal life and Italian, Spanish leaders should also live as their people do. They shouldn’t be aspiring to or copying a rich minority.”

He will also be remembered for stabilising the country’s economy and promoting equity and social justice.

Neither will he be forgotten for legalising abortion and marijuana in a country with Catholic majority.

He said: “Marijuana is another plague, another addiction. Some say it’s good but no, that’s rubbish. Not marijuana, tobacco or alcohol – the only good addiction is love!.

“But 150,000 people smoke [marijuana] here and I couldn’t leave them at the mercy of drugs traffickers. It’s easier to control something if it’s legal and that’s why we’ve done this.”

On his retirement plans, he is not going to be typical.

“I have no intention of being an old pensioner, sitting in a corner writing my memoirs – no way!” he said.

Don’t expect him to write “My Watch” in a hurry then.

Politics / FG Withdraws N2bn Fraud Suit Against Danjuma’s Aide by miftah: 1:59pm On Mar 02, 2015
The federal government, through the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police Force, on Monday discontinued a criminal case filed before the Lagos federal high court against Manasseh Obadiah Zorto, special assistant to Theophilus Danjuma, a lieutenant-general and former minister of defence.

Zorto was charged to court for allegedly defrauding Danjuma of more than N2 billion.

When the matter came up on Monday before Justice Chukwujeku Aneke, Effiong Asuquo, the SFU lawyer, applied to withdraw the charge against the accused person.

The defence team led by Ricky Tarfa (SAN) did not object to the prosecution’s application, paving way for the judge to strike out the charge.

The accused was initially charged before Justice Okon Abang during the last long vacation of the court in 2014. At the end of the vacation, the matter was assigned to Justice Aneke, who has now struck it out based on the prosecution’s application.

According to the charge, marked FHC/L/221C/14, the accused person fraudulently used his position as an employee of Tita-Kuru Petrochemicals Limited, T.Y Holdings Limited and Central Realities Limited – all three linked with Danjuma – to steal about N2 billion from the companies.

The accused was said to have used his position as executive director and special assistant, finance and investment to chairman of the companies (Danjuma), to perpetrate the alleged fraud.

In the 19-count charge filed by the SFU, the accused was said to have defrauded the companies about N1.6 billion and $121,468.

Some of the counts read: “That you, Manasseh Obadiah Zorto, while being employed and acting in the capacity of a servant at Tita-Kuru Petrochemicals Limited, on or about December 10, 2008, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud your employer, did make or was privy to making false entry in a book or document belonging to your employer, to wit, that the project cost for the year 2008 was $40,869,989.00 whereas in fact, it was $8,594,989.00, resulting in a fraudulent overpayment of $322, 750.00 (N43, 571, 250.00) to yourself, thereby committed an offence of fraudulent false accounting, contrary to Section 438 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 17, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

“That you, Manasseh Obadiah Zorto, while being employed as Special Assistant, Finance and Investment to Chairman, T.Y Holdings Limited, on or about March 1, 2010, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, knowingly made a false representation of facts to Chairman, T. Y Holdings Limited, to wit, that a company known and registered as SMS Forever Limited (RC#868956) was a veritable investment with huge potential capable of yielding up to 214 per cent return on investments within a period of less than one year, and with the intent to defraud, induced T.Y Holdings Limited to deliver to SMS Forever Limited, the sum of N240 million, thereby committing the offence of obtaining property by false pretences, contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act of 2006.”

Car Talk / Re: Lagos Restricts Danfo Drivers To 8-Hrs Of Work by miftah: 6:16am On Nov 12, 2013
lastpage:

Those TOUTS work for Opeifa and Fashola and his God Father 'Tinubu' so nothing will be done about them.

It just amazes me when these clowns in govt just do a "COPY AND PASTE" of legislation from overseas, into Nigeria, not taking into consideration our "peculiar environmental issues" that differ greatly from where they are copying from and creates a different set of scenario, for such laws!

8-HRS working time is very desirable and is obtainable in most advanced countries but hey, those drivers can organize their 8-hrs properly,
They can predict their income almost to the last dollar for those 8-hrs
They dont have Agbero to contend with, within that 8-hrs
They dont have "official LGA Touts to deal with within that 8-Hrs
They dont have to spend half of that 8-hrs in unending traffic snarls
They dont have useless Policemen shooting at them with life bullets if they dont part with part of their 8-hr income
They have a "social benefit" system which cushions their income of 8-hrs, should the unexpected happen
Their "car-testing and certification" really works unlike ours where the Govt is only interested in the "Testing Fee" and nothing more!
They dont operate within a Govt that closes down their wife's stall and every opportunity the Governors wife farts or his cronies cough!

I can go on and on but it is not necessary.

Our leaders are past their sell-by date, not fit ofr purpose and completely EXPIRED!
8-hrs working time is not top of the list of this govts problem.

For emphasis, build more roads (not those one-season, rain-wash-away make-overs called roads) and open up access for smoother traffic
*Create alternative to road traffic, buod 4th mainland Bridge and other roads. Main Rail and Light rail inter-city systems is needed.
*Stop buying over-used and written-off Buses as new ones to be used as BRT. Buy good and new Buses as obtained abroad.
*Remove all your street urchins from the road.
*Lets have stable power as a priority and other things will follow.
FInally, stop arming thugs for your political rascality, it comes back to hurt the populace ... and your own family, if not you, as well.

I don commot this thread.

Lastpage!
I luv dis, nice 1, I hope they reason along wit us and make amendment before it`s too late.
