PoliticsTo Move Forward, Every Nigerian Should Obey Laws And Order – Fashola by mightycrown1(op): 6:30pm On May 04, 2015
Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday said Nigerians could only ensure the success of the incoming administration by being law abiding.

Fashola Fashola said this at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Session of the 32nd Synod of the Diocese of Lagos, Anglican Communion, held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. He said a country could only achieve meaningful development if its citizens were law abiding by following its rule of law.

“To move Nigeria forward, let every Nigerian obey the laws and order, you cannot obey law and order when it suits you but disobey them when it doesn’t suit you. “At this moment of great expectations, all of us have a very important role to play, and our roles will be bigger than those that were elected into office.

“Our nation will be as good as we wish it to be, we decide the kind of society we want to live in, we make those decisions by the actions that we take and the actions that we refuse to take. “I see abiding by law and order as the most important issue that we have not really focus on in Nigeria,’’ he said. Most Rev. Adebola Ademowo, the President of the Synod, in his welcome address, urged the Lagos State governor- elect, Mr Akinwummi Ambode, to have the interest of the masses at heart.

“The newly elected governor of Lagos State should have the interest of the citizens by improving on the standard of living of the masses,’’ he said. (NAN)

By Onoja Innocent

President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and All Progressives Congress, APC, National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have been described as the architects of modern democracy in Nigeria.

Delta APC candidate in the just concluded governorship election, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, said the two men worked hard to rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which he alleged had crumbled the socio-economic structure of the country in the last 16 years.

Emerhor, in a statement by his Director of Media and Political Communication, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe, said: “Now, there will be a great light at the end of the tunnel for Nigerians who have been fasting and praying for “change” occasioned by the reckless corruption in high places in government.”

He said that the misrule of the PDP provoked Tinubu, Buhari and other progressives to deploy time, treasure and talents to rescue Nigeria from the un-progressive cabal.

Emerhor said “Asiwaju Tinubu and Gen Buhari have finally etched their names in global political hall of fame through their commitment to the entrenchment of structures that produced our democratic experience as a nation.”

PoliticsBuhari’s AIT Ban by mightycrown1(op): 5:19am On Apr 30, 2015
MAJ-GEN Muhammadu Buhari’s orders barring the crew of the Africa Independent Television, AIT, from the courtesy visit of the Cuban Ambassador to him at Defence House, Abuja, has set off an uproar that connects to Buhari’s first administration 31 years ago.

AIT and the public-owned Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, were accused of airing “hate” documentaries during the heady campaigns. According to Buhari’s media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, AIT was asked to“stay aside” due to what the Buhari camp described, as “security and family concerns” until matters of “standards and ethics” were resolved.

It is very worrisome that matters relating to the campaigns are still rankling the president-elect to the point of taking a step that could mar the euphoria that enveloped the country after the peaceful and pleasant conclusion of the presidential election. President Goodluck Jonathan displayed uncommon patriotism by conceding the election to Buhari even before the announcement of the results.

The tone Jonathan set ought to guide the conduct of our leaders.Buhari should not be vindictive. It is a low point for the office he is about to occupy. It would be sad if the in-coming administration relates with persons or groups based on their conduct during the campaigns. It would be contrary to the “fair to all” principle enunciated in the presidential oath of office. More importantly, the president-elect, who styled himself as a born-again democrat at Chatham House, London, to counter his draconian media policies, as a military Head of State, should know the media have a constitutional duty to hold public officers accountable.

Section 22 of the Constitution states, “The press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this Chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.”

Buhari cannot amend the Constitution. We find the “security concerns” the Buhari camp referred to ominous. There are legal provisions to resolve any threat to the president-elect or anyone else. We would not subscribe to “family” sentiments as bases for decision-making, especially on national issues.

The belated attempt by All Progressives Congress, APC, to “unban” AIT, merely begs the issue. APC did not issue the order. Buhari did.

Three years ago, I was due to get married. I met my ex at the university and when I took him home, my parents weren’t impressed with him. They didn’t like the fact that he came from a poor background but I didn’t care. I agreed to marry him when he raised the topic. A few weeks to the wedding, we had a heated argument.

It was my fault as my family’s disapproval and lack of enthusiasm about the wedding stressed me out. I stormed out of his flat but came back that evening only to find him in bed with another woman. He’d gone out after our row, got drunk and picked her up. I was shocked. He blamed me for what he did and told me he didn’t feel like getting married. I was gutted but after three years, I’d more or less moved on. Now he shows up wanting us to try again. I could learn to love him if it’s worth it.

Lagos – A 31-year-old man, Samson Ndubuisi, who allegedly had canal knowledge of an 11-year-old boy, was on Wednesday hauled up before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Ndubuisi, a resident of No. 3/4, Umuaka Close, Ilufe Junction, Alaba Market, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and sexual assault by penetration.

The Prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 12 at his apartment.

Ojaokomo said the accused had canal knowledge of boy without his consent.

“The complainant said that on that fateful day, he went to fetch water at one Mrs Doris Ezenwa’s company.

“He said while he was fetching water, the accused called him and took him to a room where he forcefully had canal knowledge of him through the anus.

“The boy said that each time he went to fetch water Ndubuisi would take him to the usual spot and have sex with him.

“The complainant also said that the accused also bribed him with N100 each time he slept with him.

“The 11-year-old boy said they were caught by two men, who were Ndubuisi’s colleague at the water company.

Ojaokomo said the offences contravened the provision of Sections 259 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 259 prescribes life imprisonment for sexual assault by penetration.

PoliticsTroops Storm Sambisa, Rescue 300 Females As Boko Haram Kills 22 In Fresh Attack by mightycrown1(op): 8:58pm On Apr 28, 2015
… Identities yet to be confirmed

In a daring and precise operation the Nigerian troops have stormed the Sambisa Forest and rescued about 300 women and girls.

Also at least 21 people were killed by suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram in Marguba community and other surrounding villages of Beneshiekh, the headquarters of Kaga local government area of Borno state.

It was gathered that at least three major terrorists camps have been destroyed in the well-cordinated attacks that include the destruction of the notorious Tokumbere camp in the Sambisa Forest.

While confirming the operation the Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade said he could not confirm the identity of the freed victims and their origins and he could not state if any of them was from Chibok until after thorough screening and proper investigations.

He said: “I can only confirm the rescued this afternoon of 200 girls and 93 women in different camps in the forest. We are yet to determine their origin as all the freed persons are now being screened and profiled. Please don’t misquote me on their origin. We will provide more details later.”

Also at least twenty one people were killedby suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram in Marguba community and other surrounding villages of Beneshiekh, the headquarters of Kaga local government area of Borno state.

The insurgents according to sources also injured many residents after setting ablaze several houses mostly thatched roofs before looting foodstuff and livestock.

Beneshiekh is north west and about 76 kilometers drive from Maiduguri, the state capital. It is located on the fringes of Sambisa forest along Maiduguri- Damaturu- Kano road which have witnessed series of deadly attacks by insurgents.

This development is coming barely 24 hours after some group of insurgents laid ambush on some returning residents, killing 21 in Bultaram village of Gujba council area of Tone state while attempting to return to their sacked village to evacuate their abandoned foodstuff and livestock.

Our Correspondent reliably gathered from fleeing residents now taking refuge in Beneshiekh town that “the insurgents came from Sambisa forest axis and stormed the villages on Monday evening, wrecked havoc as they had a filed day without confrontation”.

TRUE LIFE STORY

A man 45 who has suffered several disappointments from women finally made up his mind to remain single. Meanwhile, the parents never stop to remind him the need for him to get married.

During his annual leave, he went to the village but to his surprise his parent (mother) told him that they have found a wife for him. He thought it was a joke, and jokingly he replied that he doesn’t need any woman anymore because they are full of deceit.
The mother made him known how serious she was, and then he allowed the mother to send for the lady. When the lady arrived he could not believe his eyes how small in age he thought the lady was and correctly she was too young for him.

After talking to the lady he found out that the lady was 17 years old and was then sitting for her wassce.

Having known her age, the surprising question he asked the girl was “didn’t you think I’m too old for you?” but the girl replied “I don’t know o, your mother has been telling me about you for some time now and besides your uncle came to my father on this issue and he accepted; so I have no option of mine own”.

If you are the man will you go ahead with the marriage knowing that the person in question is a child not a lady?

If you are the girl will you go ahead and marry someone that is old enough to be your father?

PoliticsOil Prices ‘will Hit Optimum Level’ As Demand Grows by mightycrown1(op): 12:39am On Apr 28, 2015
INDUSTRY leaders at the World Economic Forum on East Asia have said they expect oil prices to rise further. The leaders, meeting in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, said the long-term view was that demand for oil is growing. Oil prices are around their highest levels for the year. The price of Brent crude was at $63 a barrel on Tuesday, up 40% from its January low of $45 a barrel and near its high for the year of $65.

Oil prices more than halved in the second half of last year, as falling demand and high levels of output caused a glut in supply. Melody Boone Meyer, president of Asia-Pacific exploration and production at US energy giant Chevron, said that dramatic falls were not an uncommon feature of the oil market. “The price of oil in the last 30 years has fallen five times by 50%,” she said at the forum. “There’s a surplus of supply right now, and inevitably the decline will occur.”

It was important to continue with projects that were in development, she added, emphasising that Chevron had a lot of projects that are well supported at these price levels. Shahril Shamsuddin, group chief executive at Malaysia’s SapuraKencana Petroleum, backed that view: “The light at the end of the tunnel is that, in the long term, demand is growing and over the next two to three years we will see prices come to an optimum level.”

But the chief executive of GE Indonesia, Handry Satriago, said that a lot of its customers in the country were delaying projects because of the slump in prices. “Since last year we experienced some delay, but last year was because of the political situation of the country,” he said. “We were having the election, and a new government, but now that delay has became more delayed due to the current situation.” The company has been trying to work with partners to “keep projects warm” and not to cancel them. “We show our commitment to them [oil partners], that we are here and we continue to support and work together,” he said. “We also lobby to the government to make sure that the project can continue.” With Asia expected to become a net importer of oil in the next decade as consumption booms, government officials said it was necessary to secure energy supplies, even with falling prices.

Natig Aliyev, minister of energy of Azerbaijan, said energy was the main factor in the stability and development of each country. “To develop our economy, we have to secure our energy supply and demand,” he said, adding that Indonesia was the country’s second-biggest export market. Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, lost its position as South East Asia’s sole nation in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) in 2008 after it became a net oil importer.

PoliticsIMF Calls For Further Currency Depreciation In Nigeria by mightycrown1(op): 12:29am On Apr 28, 2015
By Babajide Komolafe

THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday called for further currency depreciation in Nigeria and seven other oil exporting West African countries.

Recall that the Nigeria’s currency, naira, has depreciated officially by 28 percent from N155 to a dollar November last year to N197 at the close of business yesterday

In its April 2015 Regional Economic Outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa, which economic growth of 4.5 percent for the region in 2015, IMF said, “For the region’s eight oil exporting countries, fiscal adjustment is a priority; policy makers should support an adjustment by allowing exchange rates to depreciate, where flexible exchange rate mechanisms are in place”.

Summarising the Outlook for the region, Ms. Antoinette Sayeh, Director of the IMF’s African Department in a press release stated, “Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is set to register another year of solid economic performance with growth expected to expand 4½ percent in 2015. The region will continue being one of the fastest growing in the world—second only to emerging and developing Asia.

”That said, the economic expansion will be at the lower end of the range experienced in recent years, mainly reflecting the impact of the sharp decline of oil and commodity prices over the last six months. But the impact of this shock will be highly differentiated across the region.

“Sub-Saharan Africa’s eight oil exporters have been hard hit by the price decline, and their average growth in 2015 is expected to be about 1¼ percentage points lower than in 2014 in response to this shock.

”However, for most of the rest of the region, growth prospects remain favorable. These countries are enjoying the benefits of lower oil import bills, although some are also feeling the impact of lower prices for their non-oil commodity exports. Growth is projected to be particularly strong in most low-income and more fragile countries, and this will help to reduce poverty levels.

“In Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the Ebola outbreak is beginning to be controlled, with a sharp decline in the incidence of new infections. However, 2015 will be another difficult year, with economic activity expected to be significantly depressed.

”The IMF has provided $390 million of assistance to help these countries, including $100 million of grants for debt relief—the first instance of such assistance by a development partner.”

Crime31-yr-old Arraigned For N53.6m Theft by mightycrown1(op): 12:18am On Apr 28, 2015
A 31-year-old year man, Kehinde Lateef, who served his one year internship with Sterling Bank Plc on Lagos Island, has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates Court for fraudulently withdrawing N53.6 million from the accounts of two customers.

It was learned that the suspect conspired with three others, currently at large, to hack into the bank’s system a few days after he completed his one year service with the bank and withdrew N49.1 million from one account and N4.5 million from another.

Vanguard gathered that Lateef was arrested after the management of the bank reported the case to the police at Lion Building Division. Following the report, a manhunt for the suspects began. A year later, detectives tracked down Kehinde Lateef at his residence on Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos.

He was arrested, while others escaped.

After investigation, Lateef was arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a three-count charge of felony, to wit stealing.

The police prosecutor, ASP Chidi Okoye, said the offence was punishable under Sections 409 and 285 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime and Chief Magistrate A. O. Awogboro, admitted the accused to a N2 million bail, with two sureties in like sum.

Awogboro adjourned the case to May 6 for mention, while the defendant was taken to Ikoyi Prisons, pending fulfilment of bail conditions.
