PoliticsOgun SDP Refutes Allegation Of Jonathan’s Sponsorship To Destabilise S-west Poli by mightycrown1(op): 3:53am On Apr 16, 2015
- VANGUARD
By Daud Olatunji

ABEOKUTA—The Social Democratic Party, SDP, in Ogun State has said that it was untrue that the SDP was sponsored by the Presidency to destablise the politics of the South West.

The party said the attempt to extend largesse to it by the Presidency ahead of the election was rejected, describing its party as self-funding.

State chairman of the party, Chief Olu Agemo, while briefing newsmen in Abeokuta on the outcome of the election and activities of the party debunked the allegation and thanked the national leader of the party, Chief Olusegun Osoba, and his wife for their support during the campaign tours and the elections.

Agemo, who was flanked by the governorship candidate of the party, Senator Akin Odunsi, his running mate and deputy governor of the state, Prince Segun Adesegun, and state secretary of the party, Chief Abimbola Awofeso, said the party had toured not less than 300 campaign spots in towns and villages across the 236 wards in the state.

While clearing the air on the rumour that the leadership of SDP in the state had collected some money from the Presidency, Agemo said: “First, was the bombardment of the social media of their destructive mission that we were being sponsored by the Presidency to destabilise the politics of South West.

“We say unequivocally that at no time did we have anything to do, materially or otherwise, with the Presidency. Men of goodwill from the Presidency who made contact with us got it clear from us that we were not out for financial gains in our effort to ensure equity and fair play.

“Our struggle in Ogun State was not based on financial gains. None of those delegations at the highest level can say that any financial transaction transpired between us.

“We thank the powerful delegation from the Presidency for appreciating that our disagreement is within the progressive family.

“The SDP in Ogun state was self-funding throughout the campaigns and elections. Even, when the national body of the SDP wanted to send us some funds, we advised that it should be sent to other SDP states which may be in financial trouble. As progressives, we have resolved to remain fully within the progressive family.

“We wish to thank our royal father, the Alake of Egbaland, HRM, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, and the Awujale of Ijebuland, HRM, Dr. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, who up to the last moments were still resolute in finding a solution to the disagreement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the party has said that its governorship candidate in the April 11 election, Senator Akin Odunsi, has sent a congratulatory message to the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who emerged winner in the election.

The party, however, added that it was still studying the results of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections, saying, it would come up with its decision after the scrutiny.

The party Chairman also accused one of the opposition political parties in the state of sending a sinister message on the social media that Odunsi had withdrawn from the race, which he said contributed to the party’s loss.

He said: “Our candidate has, after the announcement of the result, sent a congratulatory message to Governor Ibikunle Amosun. “It was bad to the extent of attempting to destroy our governorship candidate through SMS, WHATSAPP and Facebook on the day of election that he had withdrawn from the race. This had damaging effect on our members and supporters right at the polling centres.” -

PoliticsHow Obasanjo Destroyed PDP (2) - VANGUARD by mightycrown1(op): 3:40am On Apr 16, 2015
How Obasanjo destroyed PDP (2) on April 16, 2015
By Ochereome Nnanna

FORMER President Obasanjo, as we can see, used the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to rule Nigeria for eight years. As soon as he assumed office in 1999, he made up his mind to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state, his pet party system which he canvassed vigorously while Nigeria conducted its transition to civil rule programmes. The first part of this serial chronicled how he shrivelled the opposition parties and made the PDP into a colossus that dominated the political landscape. Eventually, most leading lights in the opposition parties decamped to the PDP.

By 2007 when Obasanjo was constitutionally forced out of power, PDP was at the zenith of its power and glory. It had 26 out of the 36 governors, 260 out of the 369 members of the House of Representatives, 85 out of the 109 senators and an emphatic command of the majority in the state legislatures and the 774 local councils. It was at this point that the party started priding itself as “the largest party in in Africa”, and some of its chieftains boasted that the PDP would rule Nigeria for “sixty years”.

The size of the Party was largely as a result of Obasanjo’s repression of the opposition parties, which became unattractive for politicians tocontest for power. The party was so powerful that Obasanjo suddenly developed an ambition to grab extra terms of office for himself when he was nearing the end of his constitutional two terms. To succeed, he nullified the membership of the party and ensured that all party members were re-registered. This, of course, ensured that those Obasanjo did not want in the party were weeded. These included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Kalu.

When his tenure elongation plans failed, Obasanjo put his Plan “B” into effect. He opted to unilaterally install his successor in office. He chose a terminally ailing Governor Umaru Yar’ Adua of Katsina state for president and paired him with a quiet, self-effacing Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as Vice President. He also planted his cronies as governors of the various states. He even planted them in opposition parties.

A case in point was in Imo, where the Obasanjo ordered the PDP to withdraw from the governorship race and support Chief Ikedi Ohakim, who had decamped from PDP when he failed to get the ticket at the primaries and ran on the ticket of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA).

Obasanjo’s ambition, at this juncture, was to become the Life Leader of the PDP, such that he could wield great political influence and lord it over the occupants of Aso Villa from Ota or Abeokuta.

The plan ran into storms, however. When Yar’ Adua assumed power, he refused to dance to Obasanjo’s tunes. He was determined to leave a legacy of his own. Obasanjo was not given any space to maneouvre. But unfortunately, Yar’ Adua became seriously sick and died in 2010. Obasanjo jumped out of his political doghouse and started prompting Jonathan to run on his own terms in 2011, even though many northern leaders preferred that he allowed one of theirs to replace him.

Soon, Obasanjo found out he had lost his place in the PDP even under Jonathan. It was so bad he was almost ignominiously booted out of his Board of Trustees Chairman post. In the middle of 2013, he resigned from the post. President Jonathan was later on to describe Obasanjo as “a goat seller who, after selling his goat, refuses to release the rope”. The Ota-born chicken farmer went home and started the war that led, ultimately, to the end of PDP’s reign.

In January 2014, he published one of his series of scandalous open letters to President Jonathan, accusing him of every abominable sin under the sun, including training snipers to kill his political opponents. A man under whose watch many prominent people were murdered was accusing a president who never recorded a single such incident in his five and half years as President!

Between April and May 2014, Obasanjo went round many states of the North and persuaded some of the governors he planted in power to run for president to replace Jonathan. Some of these were: Governors Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto and Babangida Aliyu of Niger. Some of these OBJ-made governors were at the forefront of the rebellion against Jonathan.

The tipping point came when five of the rebel governors decamped from PDP and joined the newly amalgamated All Progressives Congress (APC) which was put together by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and General Muhammadu Buhari.

From that point on, the rapid emaciation of the PDP could no longer be stopped. Obasanjo was relentless in his attacks on Jonathan. Apart from writing public letters, he also nudged some of his out-of-work former ministers, such as Oby Ezekwesili, Nasir el Rufai and lately, Charles Soludo, to slam the Jonathan administration each time they got the chance to go public. Obasanjo climaxed his choreography with the public tearing of his PDP membership card a couple of months to the presidential election.

Of course, PDP’s fall from power under the watch of President Jonathan was further helped by the President’s failure to take decisive steps when and where he needed to. This made him subject to blackmail. Jonathan surrounded himself with people who posed as his lovers but were actually deceivers. They took whatever they could from him and abandoned him when he needed them most. Matters were not helped by his sloppy handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, which grew from a small pox on the nose to a plague that wracked the whole nation.

Perhaps, if Jonathan had been a little more in charge and decisive, he would have prevented some of the little problems that ballooned to decide for him only one term in office. But Obasanjo was the headwind that chipped away, unchallenged, at the pedestal of his presidential power.

PoliticsHouse Of Reps: The S-south Quest For Speakership - VANGUARD by mightycrown1(op): 1:11am On Apr 15, 2015
By Emman Ovuakporie
IT is no longer news that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will produce the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives when 8th Assembly of the National Assembly takes off in June. What is news is that the South-South and South-East geo-political zones may not produce any of the top leaders on account of their preference for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which will become the leading opposition party in June. As it is, the North may produce the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives in addition to the presidency it already has through Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd). To address the looming anomaly, the APC has been advised to zone the position of the Speaker to the South South geo-political zone of the country to reflect the principle of federal character required by the 1999 constitution (as amended). This was contained in a statement issued by a pro-democracy group, Change Vanguard, and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tayo Bello,. The group raised alarm over the possibility of the three northern geo-political zones producing the President, Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/APC-LEADERS.jpg
FILE PHOTO: From left, APC National Leader Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu discussing with President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and National Chairman of APC Chief John Oyegun during APC Joint Leadership Meeting held in Abuja. Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan.

The statement read in part: “Change Vanguard welcomes the positive political revolution brought by the APC and the subsequent election of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as president-elect on March 28, 2015. However, Change Vanguard is disturbed by ongoing political developments in the lead-up to the May 29, 2015 handover date. As it stands, the incoming All Progressive Congress administration already has the president-elect, Buhari from the North-west and the vice president-elect, Prof Yemi Osinbajo from the South-West. “Change Vanguard is aware that the position of the Senate President may go to the North Central or North East geo-political zone since the South East previously touted for the Senate presidency failed to produce any APC senator. Change Vanguard is disturbed by the reported moves by the APC to zone the position of Speaker, House of Representatives to the North East. “Change Vanguard reminds the APC that if the House speakership position is zoned to the North East geo-political region, it would be a clean sweep for the country’s northern region with the President, Senate president and House Speaker coming from there. This will be in breach of the constitution and a divisive development. “Change Vanguard recognises the fact that the South-East failed to produce any federal lawmaker in the Senate and House of Representatives. However, th e South-South geo-political zone returned at least three ranking and qualified APC House members. This is a golden opportunity that the APC must not miss to ensure. In the spirit of fairness and adherence to the federal character principle, the position of Speaker, House of Representatives should be zoned to the South South geo-political zone. “Change Vanguard calls on the All Progressive Congress to adhere to the “federal character” principle, which has been enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution since 1979. The federal character principle seeks to ensure that appointments to public service institutions fairly reflect the linguistic, ethnic, religious, and geographic diversity of the country.” The incoming 8th Assembly of the National Assembly is due to be inaugurated on June 6, 2015. Position of speaker Six APC federal lawmakers from five geo-political zones of the country are jostling for the position of Speaker. The current speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has opted out of the legislature and has been declared governor-elect of his home state, Sokoto. Battle for speakership: The six federal lawmakers vying for the House speakership position are: Abdulmumin Jibrin from Kano (North-West), Yakubu Dogara from Bauchi (North-East), Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos (South-West), Mohammed Monguno from Borno (North-East), Pally Iriase from Edo State (South-South) and Israel Ajibola Famurewa from Osun State (South-West). Gbajabiamila who represents Surulere Federal constituency is presently the minority leader in the lower chamber. Jibrin, on the other hand is chairman, House Committee on Finance. Dogara is chairman, House Services and Welfare Committee. Monguno is chairman, House Committee on Agriculture. Iriase is deputy chairman, House Committee on Legislative Outreach. Monguno, like Dogara, has been in the House since 2007, while Iriase, Jibrin and Famurewa first came to the House in 2011. But Gbajabiamila has been in the House since 2003. -
