Knowing all these, you decided that such people would be the best example in this case to judge what's right or wrong to do! Such flawed logic! SMH! |

tartar9:I bought a 32gb class 10 Advance memory card yesterday in ibadan... Passed all the tests for speed and capacity I put it through... and it cost me #3,500! I was so scared before buying this mem card, that I couldn't believe it! Most people here keep talking about the price an original should cost... Someone said 4k in lag and 5k outside lag, and other shops where I first checked around to buy said same thing, that I won't get an original memory card in ibadan for lower than 5k, that if I saw any I should run for dear life! And these also were not what would be considered by many as "reputable stores" like was suggested here to shop from. It also wasn't a store dealing in camera stuff. It was just a store! Also most people here had spoken about there being too many fake Advance memory cards that it's no longer advisable to buy them anymore! Hence I was noticeably scared when the seller quoted #3,500 for the SD, I told him how I'd been disappointed several times and he assured me he was sure of that one, and even brought out a "fake" one for comparison, though I admit I didn't see that much of a difference btw them! But he persuaded me, saying he'd give me warranty, that as long as the memory card still looked neat, he'd replace it if it went bad! I reasoned that if he was honest about what he was saying about the warranty, and not just trying to get me to buy and turn around later, he would let me test it in my phone before paying. So I asked him, and he agreed! Well the only thing I knew to test memory cards with was Sd insight (android app). Now it doesn't actually test memory cards, it just reads the information on it to the you the device info like the manufacturer, actual size, serial num, etc. When I used it on the SD, it said "origin is unknown", displaying no other info for it except that it was 32gb and manufactured in April 2017! I was even more scared then, and told him I wasn't buying! He was a bit annoyed at this point, saying he was very sure of it that he allowed me test it to be sure myself, that if he wasn't he won't have let me! Then he took it from me. That kinda touched me, so I decided to give it a shot, and take him up on his words. I told him I'll take it and that he must make good his promise on the warranty. He didn't even really reply me anymore; he was just nodding. I took the memory card and checked for the serial number at the back of it like was suggested here on this thread, and tried scratching it slightly to see if it was printed or etched into the card. It didn't feel quite smooth, felt etched into it. Then I paid him. IMMEDIATELY I got home I began running the tests further on it (saw them on this thread and while googling). I ran FakeFlashTest. Finished without errors! Ran it again, still same thing. Ran H2testw, finished without errors as well again! Ran it a second time, still same thing. But it indicated the write speed as 7.50MB/s, which was low, although the read speed was fast, 61MB/s. i reasoned that the relatively slow speed (class 10 memory cards should be at least 10MB/s) was due to it being connected to a usb 2.0 port and not a usb 3.0 one, so I decided to test directly on my phone. I used the app A1 SD Bench. It gave me write speeds of 19MB/s! I've been really delighted! Amazing thread! Helped me in real life to purchase a good memory card. So we can dispel common myths about the price, store, etc. You could follow my approach to get the warranty, and anyone who's truly honest will let you test it after giving the warranty (after all he intends to collect it back if not working properly right? Why not immediately you test it?). You could then use SD insight to check for manufacturer info, run the two tests on FakeFlashTest (they are way faster than H2testw, the longest took me a few secs, and they're almost as accurate as using H2Testw). Running H2Testw took me about 1hr 20 mins, so if it passes initial tests, you can run that at home. Also test the speed of the SD card using A1 SD Bench. All that, apart from H2Testw can be done in the store. Don't forget the physical checks of the serial number on the sd card as well... it should be etched into the card, rather than printed (the first you do when you open the sd card in the store!) Basically if an SD doesn't lie about its size and it's true class, I see no reason to think it lied about anything else! |

edit: So I recharged but buying a recharge card, and dialled the *737# code. Worked flawlessly! I immediately checked my airtime balance IMMEDIATELY after dialing this gtbank code and I saw that N5 had been deducted! well I wanted to be certain, so I dialled the gtbank code which again worked, then immediately checked airtime balance again. Sure enough another N5 had been deducted! this most likely has something to do with it on Etisalat lines. If you don't have N5 left on the line, it may not work |
it seems this is peculiar to Etisalat numbers. This works fine when dialled on another network even though the said line has a balance of zero kobo. I think. the solution would be changing numbers to another network so that it works for you. |

while I also get your advice to be wary of both staff and students with ulterior motives, I want to reiterate that students as much as possible tried to avoid this "militancy" approach. UI isn't known for such. They wrote letters first that were ignored by the "VERY reasonable, always listening" Olayinka and the Dean of Students. They called off protests at first sign of hope. I must say they've done quite well in the event of things |
smellingmenses:From what you've written you sound like you graduated from OAU (DSA, SUG, etc...). You also know Prof Olayinka and are familiar with UI. How's that so? You also said he's a reasonable man who's always listening. If we ignore this thing with students, even his encounter with NASU doesn't show that! So, how do you know the Prof? |
smellingmenses:Here's what happened: For about 2 weeks power and water were non-existent in a particular hall in UI. It became unbearable. people didn't know how they'd have been able to survive much longer! They had been silent and tried to endure it, but could no longer do so. They had complained to the hall management without anything being done about it. They had one, and only one, option left! They had to protest! So protest they did. peaceful student protest. Beating buckets and plates, they matched to the Dean of Students office to lay complaints. He listened and promised to fix things. And surprisingly what had lingered for two weeks was solved in a few hours!!! The hall warden didn't like that he had been exposed in this way, and looked for scapegoats. A certain student who had been posting his campaign posters showing intent to contest for the chairmanship of the hall, also known as Mote, was picked. It was easy to choose someone as visible as him because he showed intent in contesting hall elections with his campaign posters everywhere. It was also easy because that was his 6-month IT period, which he was having in Port Harcourt. That he was picked though doesn't mean he was particularly guilty of any wrongdoing; in fact he was in the Hall Warden's office few days later with a few others over another unrelated issue, and the hall warden changed topics from what they were discussing to promise to make Mote a scapegoat! He said "I warned that Mote to stop leading them in the protest, but he didn't listen to me. I'll show him a lesson!" And Mote was sited right there!! He obviously hadn't ever set eyes on Mote before. He was just looking to find some scapegoat! The result of that was this was that Mote was summoned before the student disciplinary committee (SDC) and suspended for a semester. A release later by the school claimed he was suspended for "leading a protest", nevermind that the said protest was very peaceful as they themselves had earlier acknowledged. it's worthy of note that there's no law that states that whenever a student is on IT he is totally forbidden from setting foot on campus ever again, except his IT b concluded. The IT is an academic programme! The Student is still an academic student of the school and can take breaks from his placement to return to school should the need arise! Such was the case with Mote, he came back to process a scholarship which he won and had legitimate reason to b on campus when this incident occured. Following his suspension, students were vexed at this seeming unjust victimization. After all efforts by the student union to resolve this via letters and entreaties and other methods yielded nothing, they decided to protest and were joined by the other student unions of other schools in the state During this period the power supply was erratic, making students annoyed even more. They had evidence that the power distribution company delivered at least 18 hours of electricity on a daily basis as they were told by the company themselves. They saw nothing to justify the inadequate power supply they were experiencing! Following their protest over these matters, the university was shut down. During the course of protest the university management were able to persuade the students to cool off their protesting, promising them that they'll look into the matter. Having this word from them, the students decided that victory wasn't far from them anymore, hence stopped their protest, not realIzing that they had been tricked! Meetings by the school management were secretly done, students were kept in the dark as to what the school had resolved in the matter, this was a ploy to quickly get the better of Students without them knowing what would hit them! However the subsequent body language of the VC of the school, as well as his media briefings would betray him. He quickly fixed a PTA meeting so that they could get to parents with their own side of the story behind students back, sidestep them, and play a quick one on them. Following this discovery the student leaders decided to hold their own meeting to strategize on how to react. The school management got wind of this meeting the students wanted to hold and sent the police after them. But police can listen to common sense as well, without any real reason to hold them, they were soon released! The students in question were PG students, being themselves union presidents when they were undergraduates, and as PG students could b in school. They could also be in the SUB, there's no reason why they couldn't be! Students are angry at this this show of insincerity from the VC, and apparent inability to manage people. The NASU had earlier shown this his incompetence; they had almost violent protests earlier, now it's the turn of Students, and all this in the first few months of his tenure! So there you have it! |
