Career / My Career Dilemma by mikkybrick: 11:56am On Sep 20, 2012

Career dilemma

i'm in my late 20s, graduated from Engr. faculty in 2006 (not computer/electrical engr) though, with a flare for IT that begun since the early 2000s. To cut the long story short, this is a synopsis of my career thus far:

Studied and gained knowledge in web design/PHP development, microsoft OS,hardware troubleshooting and general IT skills etc on my own before finishing university.

worked in a small telco, well big telco making small money, as an executive assistant - applications development, general IT support (staff/customer), as well as Microsoft windows server admin assistant. certifications - OCA, duration 2yrs+

Moved to an ISP, where my windows server skils came in handy. i later picked up cisco and became quite good with R & S, IP design etc - (small pay). certifications - MCP,MCTS,MCITP,CCNA,CCNP, duration - 3yrs+

I am presently in a specialized IT services firm (Better Pay)(multi-national), where i have picked up useful UNIX skills. i have come to fall in love with the ease at which complex tasks are done on the fly with UNIX - Solaris to be precise.

6months into my present employment, i am getting bored. Partly because it the job is part IT, part boring Business meetings.
Now this is my dilemma:

i have a few IT skills i want to build upon:

Cisco: i want to do CCIE written, then do a design certification before going for my CCIE lab
UNIX: Already 80% done with studying Solaris 10 (I use it everyday on the Job)
VMWARE: (Virtualization)already have all the video materials for VCP5 but cant write the exam because i need to attend an instructor lead course that would cost $5k
NETAPPsadStorage) I have all the materials for Data ONTAP, yet to begin studying
Citrix: Materials available too

Now, i am thinking that i may be crazy for wanting to do all these. i love to learn and i want to improve my future chances in the IT industry, being that the trend is towards the Cloud i.e datacenter technologies. Money is a factor too, as i want to be able to live the good life (The Nigerian Dream - lol).

PS: i have a genuine love for Networking, but while listening to a tech podcast, the anchor said part of what he has learnt being a consultant/CCIE, is that employers beleive you can solve any problem they throw @ you. Not necessarily on the fly, but you should at least know the direction to point to in order to get things sorted.

So i need to know what you guys think? should i just concentrate on a niche area? or am not mad afterall for wanting to learn all of this.

Car Talk / Re: What Is The Cause Of Engine Tripping Off Why Driving & Service Engine Display ON by mikkybrick: 6:27pm On Aug 24, 2012
@hymadon simply do a diagnostic scan on your car before you adjust this or that. do you also experience slow acceleration and hard/delayed cranking b4 the engine starts?
Car Talk / Re: Camry 99 Thermostat Removal by mikkybrick: 1:39pm On Aug 16, 2012
@mobuchi, for your new car, were you having overheating problem if you stay in traffic before you removed it? i drive a nissan altima and no such issues no matter how long i stay in traffic. before then i was using a mercedes and no overheating! now you're talking of double cell radiators.b4 doing all that, did you scan your car? hmm...na wa for our way of thinking. it's this same thinking that has made 99 model toyota cars so ubiquitous.

na wa for naija mechanics sha! that's how they will tell you "don't buy V6 cars o! they usually have problem, this, that..." Rubbish! instead of these half educated road side apprentices to say they don't have the technical know-how to diagnose and rectify, they will be making noise...<hisses> lipsrsealed
Guy, leave your thermostat alone.
As for the man who is super cooling his engine (he is happy the temp guage remails lower than middle(80 degrees C) i make bold to say that Your vehicle was designed to run at a specific temperature for the best mileage and so that the oil is hot enough to get to all of the engines internal parts. You should not remove the thermostat.
Car Talk / Re: My 'service Soon' Indicator Is Still On by mikkybrick: 3:05pm On Aug 14, 2012
ZIM DRILL:

your are wrong service light just means service is due

and it seems like its common confusion when people service cars after the light comes on, expect the light to go off on its own after the service

the light wont go off if it is not reset manually or by the OBDII the most common procedure is press the odometer reset button keep on holding and turn the key on (just TURN on dont start the car) keep on holding and watching the dashboad there will be some activities going on some cars they do a count down resetting to 0 in its service memory log in the ecu

the light wont be turned off becoz the service has been done the two procedures i mentioned above are the ones that switch off the light

you are confusing CHECK ENGINE LIGHT which means the ECU is picking a fault from car sensors connected to the ECU aka computer box
Wrong! The service engine soon/check engine/check lights all fall in the category of Malfunction Indicator Lamps (MIL). Depending on car manufacturer, it is purely syntax. On my Nissan Altima, the "Service Engine soon" light came up and i scanned and found some trouble codes. The MIL indicator usually comes up to alert you on an emission related problem with your car (O2 sensor, Air/fuel sensor, Catalyst problems exhaust etc.)

@OP, do a scan and analyse the codes. proceed to clear the MIL. if you drive for a few minutes and it comes back up, it means those codes need to be attended to.

Career / Re: What Do You Think Of This Gtb Offer? by mikkybrick: 8:20am On Aug 10, 2012
I get your logic, but would you rather be earning less (even with a promotion in your present Bank) than starting in a similar position with GTB with a 62% pay rise? It's not about the money but just take the GTB offer as the Promotion that's been overdue to you in your present Bank and enjoy the money jare.
We Humans are risk/change averse, but who knows what doors will open in GTB.
They say they don't promote on time in GTB blah blah blah, if you believe in God, your story can be different!

@beaf lewis had slower times during free practise because of d set up of hiscar.he said it after fp2 dat I am 95% away from where I wana be, but I can gain 90% overnight by getting my setup right. That is exactly what he did. He did not delibrately run slowly to make button seem beta.
Every f1 car is different, even within d same team. U tink button or Webber are slow drivers? See how they perform wen d setup is right and suits dia driving style. Do u remeber button in canada last year? It's all about d car's set up to ur taste. Schumacher's first season in d mercedes (former brawn gp) car dat had a bias foR oversteer dint favour him because dat car was built wit jensen button in mind. Drivers don't Engage in sandbagging to fool dia team mates. Sandbaggin isn't usually their call, Its the call of the team Heads. they do it to deceive oda teams. Not to bring confusion within d team.

You guyS conStantly show how little you know about formula1 and your indefatigable bias for Lewis Hamilton and ur Racism conSpiracy theory.
Am sure if the stewards had penalise Lewis for dangerously driving slowly in d last couple of corners while Roseberg and Maldonado were on dia flyin laps you all would have shouted Racism!!! That singular action cost Roseberg significantly in his grid placement after Q3 and clearly contravened the d safety guidelines stipulated for dat circuit.

Hey AJ, i really appreciate your contributions on this thread. this is my background/Question: i have a Hpnours degree in civil engineering, but always had a natural flare in IT.started out polishing my IT skills back in school and secured a job in a Telecoms company shortly after graduating as an NOC engineer. that helped me brush up on my skills in application development, server/network infrastructure.after 18months i moved to an ISP also as an NOC backbone enginner. i've gained microsoft certifications up to PRO level in windows server 2008, cisco CCNA, and Oracle.
i have fantastic and almost limitless exposure etc to network infrastructure(servers, routers, switches , routable IP addresses etc) as i manage them. My challenge is, i feel my career is on a plateau. what are the steps needed for me to move on to the next level?more studying, certifications(am working on CCNP) how do i get the exposure to the companies that require staff that possess my skillset etc. i really want to move embarassed. do i need to branch off and consider manager-level diplomas/certificates?. Any advice will be greatly appreciated
