Politics › Buhari To Select Ministers Without Interference, Says Oyegun by Millz404(op): 7:46pm On Aug 12, 2015
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said that
President Muhammadu Buhari is at liberty to choose his government independently of any interference.

Oyegun, who made the remark at the national secretariat of APC when the Association of Northern Students visited him on the occasion of his 76th birthday, said the president would in the next few weeks announce his ministers.

He said Buhari had spent the last two months studying the situation that he met after taking over from the People Democratic Party (PDP) led government.

"What some of us in the progressives movement that has now transformed into a governance in this country cannot accept is that the nation need to be as bad as it is today. Yes, the circumstances of last 15 years ago are different, the nature of economy is different, people have evolved but the basic fact remain the same and that is for any nation, for any government to have any legitimacy, its key emphasis and the whole justification for its existence must be the welfare of the people who have entrusted that party or that leader with the governance of their common affairs, that is the key thing.

"Fortunately, we have a blueprint which makes your welfare and everybody's welfare the core of his attention. Yes, things have turned out to be worse in the economy than we expected when we were campaigning. Every known indicator of good conduct has been violated and our institutions have factually been destroyed, even to the extent of tampering with security institution.

"So we have a major reconstruction efforts ahead of us. One can only say at this time to plead through you to Nigerians to be patient with us and with the pace at which the changes we envisage start occurring because things are much worse than we expected.

Politics › We Must Have Steady Electricity For Faster Economic Development – Buhari by Millz404(op): 6:41pm On Aug 12, 2015
Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja pledged that his administration would ensure steady electricity supply for faster socio-economic development.
Buhari stated this after being briefed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali.
According to the president, his administration will give the fullest possible attention to boosting power supply in Nigeria because it was convinced that steady electricity will launch the country into faster economic growth.
He said that the Federal Government had already identified the critical problems in Nigeria’s power sector and was taking appropriate actions to address them.
The president revealed that his administration had also prioritised certain measures in its action plan to boost electricity supply in Nigeria.
“The problems besetting our power sector are not difficult to identify. Therefore, priorities can be easily set in order to tackle them.
“The problems are more with transmission than generation, and we equally need to secure the power infrastructure round the country.
“We will address all these issues,’’ he assured.
Igali had informed the president that power generation in Nigeria, which was 1,750megawatts (MW) in 1999, had now peaked at 4,600MW.
He added that gas was available to take generation to 5,500 MW in a short time, but that the country needed to expand its electricity infrastructure to accommodate additional power generation.

Politics › Jonathan’ll Resolve PDP Crisis – Group by Millz404(op): 6:23pm On Aug 12, 2015
An association within the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party, Unity Group, has expressed confidence that the intervention of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the party’s Board of Trustees will resolve the crisis tearing the party apart before the oncoming governorship poll in the state.

The group, therefore, advocated a free, fair and credible primary to elect the party’s governorship candidate in the December 5 election.

Spokesman for the PDP Unity Group, Timi Omubo, in a statement in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on Tuesday, called on party members to stop misleading the public and concentrate on building unity within the party to retain Bayelsa.

Omubo, who denied that the BoT and Jonathan asked the party’s chairman, Sam Inokoba, to step aside, noted that issues discussed at the meeting centred on the recall of suspended and expelled members.

He said, “There was no time the party chairman, Sam Inokoba, was asked to step aside. The BoT reversed the suspension and expulsion of some party members and former President Jonathan played the role of a statesman by allowing the peace committee to use his residence.”

Politics › N25.7bn Theft: EFCC Appeals Atuche’s Discharge by Millz404(op): 7:13pm On Aug 11, 2015
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has urged the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal to upturn a judgment of a Lagos State High Court which freed a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB, Francis Atuche, of N25.7bn theft charges filed against him.

Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo, after declining jurisdiction to try the case, had on June 22, 2015 struck out the 27 counts filed against Atuche, his wife, Elizabeth, and a former Chief Financial Officer of Bank PHB, Ugo Anyanwu.

The judge faulted the EFCC for filing the case before the state high court rather than the Federal High Court.

Lawal-Akapo, in his ruling, said he was bound by the decisions of the Court of Appeal in the cases of a former Managing Director of Finbank Plc, Mr. Okey Nwosu, and a former MD of the defunct Intercontinental Bank, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, who were freed by the appellate court.

The judge held, “The allegation of purchase of shares and stocks is contained in 15 out of the 27 counts brought against the accused. The case falls squarely within the precinct of the decision of the Court of Appeal in Okey Nwosu as well as Erastus Akingbola’s case.

“The decision of the Court of Appeal becomes the extant law on the subject to the effect that any allegation of purchase of shares and stocks in any manner or colouration falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court.

“The Federal High Court, as opposed to the State High Court, has jurisdiction pursuant to Section 211(d)(h) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”
But in an appeal against Lawal-Akapo’s ruling, counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), said the case against Atuche and others was criminal, arguing that Section 252(3) of the Constitution did not confer exclusive jurisdiction on the Federal High Court to try criminal matters.

Pinheiro pointed out that counts one to 10 dealt with the alleged stealing of money belonging to the bank while count 11 to 27 dealt with the allegation of conversion of the monies to personal use.

The EFCC counsel said Lawal-Akapo also erred in law when he struck out counts 1 to 24 and 26 of the charges against Atuche and others when the defendants had not prayed for the counts to be struck out. He said the court had become charitable by granting reliefs and orders not sought for by the defendants.

Pinheiro said the court ignored the provisions of Section 152 and 153 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2011 when it struck out all the counts against the defendants.

He also contended against the ruling of the court that it was bound on the principle of stare decisis following the earlier decisions of the appellate court in the case of Nwosu and Akingbola.

The EFCC is praying the appellate court to set aside the June 22, 2015 ruling of Lawal-Akapo.

It also wants the appellate court to make an order directing the continuation of trial before Justice Lateefa Okunnu also of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
Politics › Stop Political Interference In NNPC-PENGASSAN by Millz404(op): 7:00pm On Aug 11, 2015
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to halt political interference in the operations and activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, as part of the ongoing reforms in the oil and gas industry.

Its President, Mr. Francis Johnson, said only this step would make the corporation efficient and enable it to compete favourably among its peers in the world, such as the Saudi Aramco of Saudi Arabia, Petronas of Malaysia and Petrobras of Brazil.

Johnson was quoted in a statement from PENGASSAN to have said that interference by political leaders was a major stumbling block to effective and efficient performance of the NNPC.

He spoke at the Addax Petroleum Branch of PENGASSAN Triennial Delegates’ Conference in Abeokuta, where Chris Ogiemwonyi was elected as the branch chairman for another three years, while John Omojefe and Gerald Agwu emerged vice chairman and secretary, respectively, among other elected executive council members, the statement added.

Johnson said that PENGASSAN’s subsisting concern about the Petroleum Industry Bill was that there was not enough transparency in the manner the past governments drove the process of the passage, stressing that if the PIB had been passed into law, the controversies surrounding the reforms of the sector would have been averted.

He said, “Some of the challenges confronting the industry would have been resolved if the PIB was passed as the provisions of the bill cover some of the issues raised by the protagonists of the reforms. Now, nobody is mentioning the bill again.

“The uncertainty of the bill is not comfortable to investors and stakeholders in the industry. The government should let us know what they intend to do about the bill and the process it will use to fast-track its passage into law.

“We are very optimistic that the 8th National Assembly will ensure transparency by making public the content of the bill and give topmost priority to its passage in view of its importance to the overall stability and growth of the oil and gas industry from which the government’s revenue for the sustenance of the economy is derived.”
Politics › 2019:jonathan, Party Leaders Moves To Revive PDP by Millz404(op): 6:02pm On Aug 11, 2015
Former President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party have endorsed a blueprint for the revival and rebuilding of the party in preparation for the 2019 elections.

A meeting to ratify the roadmap held on Monday at the Peoples Democratic Institute in Abuja where some party leaders, including Senator Ahmed Markafi and a former Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam, discussed the restructuring plan which was designed by the steering committee of the ‘Restart PDP Project.’

The convener of the parley, Nwosu Butches, who addressed journalists shortly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, stated that the blueprint for the revival of the PDP had been circulated to all the party leaders, including the former president, adding that the plan was well received by the party leaders and other important stakeholders.

Butches explained that the party had learnt lessons from its past mistakes, noting that impunity and imposition of candidates were part of the things that derailed the PDP and made it lose the 2015 general election.

He expressed confidence that the party would rise again, adding that the PDP was ready to bring on board the virtues and values that made it rule Nigeria for 16 years.

He further stated that a national summit would soon be held to ratify the blueprint and its implementation.

Butches said, “The comprehensive blueprint was developed to revive the PDP and restore its glory. The PDP is like a stalled vehicle which we are trying to revive and we believe that with the support the blueprint has received from all the party leaders, including the national working committee members and stakeholders, the implementation of the roadmap will lead to the progress of the party.”

The blueprint listed the challenges facing the party to include intra-party crises, manipulation of party structures by state governors and lack of internal democracy, among others.

The plan also discussed strategies for online registration of members, removal of party officials, electronic authentication and voting at party primaries, funding, removal of waivers for returning members and the party constitution.
Foreign Affairs › Nigeria 'blocks IS Recruitment' by Millz404(op): 5:49pm On Aug 11, 2015
About 24,000 people were stopped from leaving Nigeria in the 15 months to March because of suspicion they could become involved in militant Islamism, prostitution or slavery, the country's immigration agency has said.

Many of them were suspected to be heading to join militant groups such as Islamic State (IS), the agency added.

Others tried to reach "greener pastures" to escape poverty, it said.

Nigeria is Africa's most populous state, and has high levels of poverty.

It has also been hit by a six-year insurgency waged by militant Islamist group Boko Haram, which pledged allegiance to IS in March.

The agency said Nigeria was a "catchment area for recruiters because of the high number of jobless people" in the West African state.

It had therefore intensified immigration checks to bar young Nigerians with "doubtful intentions" from leaving the country.

"The terrorist group has a syndicate that arranges travel documents, visas, ticket and money for their recruits," it added, in a statement.
Many people leave Nigeria in the hope of finding a better life in Europe
Officials were also tackling illegal immigration, said Chukwuemaka Obuah, the agency's spokesman.

"We have always had problems of Nigerians going abroad for greener pasture. We look at the age of the intending traveller and the person he is travelling with, put them by the side and profile them thoroughly," he added.

The UN's Office on Drugs and Crime estimates West African trafficking victims, many of whom come from Nigeria, make up about 10% of those forced into sex work in Western Europe.

Last week, India detained two Nigerian students for allegedly trying to cross to Pakistan with the aim of finally reaching Iraq to join IS, media reports said.

Boko Haram's alliance with IS may be motivating young Nigerians to join the Middle Eastern group, reports the BBC's Bashir Sa'ad Abdullahi from Nigeria's capital Abuja.

They may have also been influenced by IS propaganda available on social media sites, he adds.
