Politics › 80 Boko Haram Commanders, Suppliers Surrender In Borno by Millz404(op): 11:49pm On Oct 01, 2015
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, has said 80 members of the Boko Haram sect, comprising commanders, foot soldiers and suppliers of logistics have surrendered to troops in Borno State.
Usman said in a statement on Thursday that those who surrendered were confirmed to have participated in several attacks on Bama, Borno State.
He said, “In a landmark event today, 80 Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered en mass to troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, in Bama, Borno State.
“The terrorists, among whom were commanders, suppliers and foot soldiers, confirmed to have partook in several terrorists attacks especially on Bama town, Borno State, surrendered as a result of the intense heat and continuous offensive action embarked on by troops.”
He said the only option available to the insurgents was to surrender as the Army, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies were committed to the actualisation of the Presidential deadline to the military to end the Boko Haram menace in three months.
Usman urged other suspected terrorists to “also surrender or face total elimination” as it was compulsory for the security forces to ensure the enthronement of peace in the area.
The Acting Army spokesman called on Nigerians to provide necessary information that could be used to apprehend all suspected terrorists in the area.

Politics › Nigeria No Longer Business As Usual-saraki by Millz404(op): 11:31pm On Oct 01, 2015
Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday said the process of lawmaking in Nigeria would no longer be business as usual.

He said he would ensure that the National Assembly under his leadership would be people-oriented.

Saraki spoke in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after taking part in an event to mark the country’s 55th Independence anniversary inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the National Assembly would make laws that would make impact on Nigerians.

He said, “I am hopeful and confident that the future is very bright.

“In the next few years, things will be even better.

“It will not be business as usual. We will ensure that the National Assembly will be people-oriented and will make laws that will make impact on Nigerians.”

Also speaking in a separate interview, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, said the nation was progressing on the right path.

“We will make it by the grace of God. We are on the right path,” he simply said.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, also told reporters that the nation had finally discovered that it had been on the wrong path for long.

He said the nation had finally moved to the right path.

“At 55, we have finally discovered that we are on the wrong road. We have finally moved to the road that leads to progress, hope, employment, prosperity and Nigeria will finally attain that greatness that God destined it for. We are on the way,” he said.

Politics › We Won't Abandon Saraki-pdp by Millz404(op): 1:52am On Sep 28, 2015
THE Peoples Democratic Party has said that the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, is fit for the office he is occupying; hence it is not considering any candidate to replace him.

The PDP denied reports that it was already looking for a senator from the opposition party to replace Saraki, who is currently under pressure to resign from office following his trial for false asset declaration by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Nigeria’s two main labour unions–Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress – on Saturday demanded Saraki’s resignation on moral grounds consequent upon his trial at the CCT.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday, said the party still believed that the trial of Saraki was political and that the PDP would not think of abandoning the Senate president until it sees the merit of the case.

Metuh said, “We have no candidate for the office of the Senate President, because we have a fit person occupying the position for now.

“We are behind him and we can’t abandon him just because he is undergoing trial. Anybody can be put on trial, but the question we should ask is whether the trial is political or not.

“Does the trial have merit? When we see the merit of the case, we will take position. But for now, there is nothing like that.”

Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, is currently facing a 13-count charge of making false declaration as a governor between 20013 and 2011.

Since his arraignment before the tribunal, there had been speculations that the PDP, which produced Saraki’s deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, had been scheming to replace him with one of its senators.

Among those being touted as possible replacements for Saraki are Ekweremadu; a former Senate President, David Mark; and a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio.

Saraki had defied the directive of his party, the All Progressives Congress, and had clinched the Senate presidency with the backing of senators of the PDP, his former party.

The APC has 59 senators while the PDP has 49 but the Senate inauguration and election took place on June 9 while about 50 APC senators were waiting for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari outside the National Assembly.

But while the APC senators have been divided from inception of the eighth Senate, all the 49 PDP senators have been united.

The PDP senators have been the main backers of Saraki since his assumption f office as the Senate president.

Metuh said it was too early for the party to be talking with its members in the Senate or thinking of abandoning the Senate president.

He said the PDP was still of the opinion that Saraki was being prosecuted because of his political belief.

The opposition spokesman said, “We are not even thinking of replacement for Saraki for now. The National Assembly is a separate arm of the government just like the judiciary and the executive.

“Is anyone thinking that there would be leadership change in the executive and the judiciary?

“Are they not independent of the other? What we are interested in is that all the three arms of government must be allowed to function independently of the other. We are saying there shouldn’t be any interference.”

When he was reminded that the leadership of both the executive and the judiciary are not on trial for any crime, Metuh said that “trial doesn’t amount to conviction.”

Health › Human Head Transplant by Millz404(op): 7:55am On Sep 27, 2015
Russian Valery Sprinidov has Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, which causes severe muscle weakness and degeneration. And Sprinidov has an unprecedented treatement in mind: the world's first human head transplant, tentatively planned for 2017.
Spiridonov spoke at a conference alongside Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero regarding his plans. He told the Daily Mail, "I do hope that my trip and my participation in this conference will help to push the idea of this surgery, to persuade the medical world and to make sure we have support from the scientific community."

Despite Spiridonov's assertion that he's "not going crazy here and rushing to cut off my head," many medical professionals believe it is a foolhardy procedure to attempt at this time. "We’re not anywhere close to solving the problem of connecting the brain to spinal cord," said Dr. Thomas Cochrane to ABC News
Dr. Canavero, pictured here, may be taking attention away from real scientific progress, according to Dr. Michael DeGeorgia. "It’s not completely out of the question that some type of head transplant could work [in the future]," DeGeorgia told ABC News. "It’s just that there are so many barriers right now that would need to be overcome in order for the whole project to work."
At his conference, Canavero spoke dramatically of the implications of this procedure, comparing it to previous American moments of progress and ingenuity: "We must go to the moon to test who we are, to test our skills, to test our confidence, to see what kind of men we are!"

When Spiridonov addressed the conference, he spoke of his body merely as "mechanics that I want to have removed," rather than a vessel he cares deeply about. He also admitted to the audience that if his condition remains untreated, it may drive him to madness.
Nurse Edith Tuazon, an attendant of Canavero's conference, talked to The Guardian of the ethical implications of such a procedure: "Suppose you have a head transplant of someone who’s an artist and on to someone who’s not an artist – will that person be able to make the arms and the hands still draw? Will the hand still ‘think?’ Will it think like it did before?"
Spiridonov admitted to the Daily Mail that he's "afraid," yet has no plans to change his mind in going through with the transplant. "If I want this kind of surgery to happen, I shouldn't put the responsibility onto someone else but should try it on myself. My family fully supports me. They also understand all the risks, and even if they think that it's too dangerous, they still support me in my decision."

Health › The Amazing Science Behind Fatal Snake Bites by Millz404(op): 10:52pm On Sep 13, 2015
Snake venom is deadly, with as many as 100,000 people worldwide dying each year from snake bites.

The World Health Organization has added 'snakebite' to its list of neglected tropical diseases, but what is the real scale of the problem it faces against such a vicious venom?

Terrifying toxins

Snake venom is made up of several hundred proteins which all have a slightly different toxic effect on the human body. One snake's poison may not be like another's, even if they are from the same species.

But, on the whole, there are two main ways snakes make us suffer - by attacking the circulatory system (ie. the blood) and/or the nervous system.

Haemotoxic venom goes for the bloodstream. It can trigger lots of tiny blood clots and then when the venom punches holes in blood vessels causing them to leak, there is nothing left to stem the flow and the patient bleeds to death.

Other venoms can increase blood pressure, decrease blood pressure, prevent bleeding or create it. They are all bad news.

Neurotoxic venom tends to act more quickly, attacking the nervous system and stopping nerve signals getting through to the muscles.

This means paralysis, starting at the head, moving down the body until, if untreated, the diaphragm is paralysed and the patient can't breathe. A classic sign of this is ptosis, when people can't keep their eyes open.

Around the area of the bite, necrosis can set in. That happens when the venom destroys nearby muscles, tissues and cells. Long-term, this can lead to amputations, the loss of the use of a limb or the need for multiple skin grafts.

Hospitals with antivenom can see up to 30 patients with snake bites in one day in NE Nigeria
Grade A killer

Snakes get closer to humans and cause more damage and more deaths than any other venomous animal, including spiders, scorpions and jellyfish.

That's because venomous snakes are found across large swathes of the planet, typically in rural, tropical areas, like sub-Saharan Africa and south-east Asia. But they also live in Australia and North America.

Since snakes lurk on the ground, often camouflaged and unseen, farmers, rural workers and many young children can easily disturb them and get bitten.

Each year, up to five million people worldwide are estimated to be bitten by snakes. Out of those, around 100,000 die and 400,000 are left disabled or disfigured by their injuries.

But the numbers could be even larger - because many of the worst-affected countries don't keep data on snakebites and research into this problem is scarce.

Snake venom is produced in glands at the back of the snake's head and it comes out through the tips of its fangs
Snake venom is used to produce anti-venom to treat snake bites by injecting it into animals in small quantities
What's the cure?

Anti-venoms. These life-saving antidotes to snake bites are made by extracting venom from snakes then injecting it diluted into sheep or horses, which build up antibodies against it.

These antibodies are then separated from the animal's blood and used to make anti-venom - but there's a problem.

Anti-venoms are expensive and only produced in limited quantities. Few ordinary people can afford them and governments and health officials have shown little interest in training medical personnel to diagnose and treat venomous snake bites.

Anti-venoms which have been proven to be safe and effective are rare - and one of the best is running out.

So now the race is on to make another one.

Researchers at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine are busy collecting venom from deadly snakes in order to develop a new generation anti-venom treatment against the bite of every dangerous snake in sub-Saharan Africa, where snake bites kill about 30,000 people each year.

But experts are still unsure whether a single, universal anti-venom (which targets many types of venom from different snakes) is better than separate anti-venoms which target specific snake species in specific regions. Both are probably worth having.

The cape cobra from south-western Africa is considered the most toxic and dangerous of the African cobras - a bite can kill a man in 30 minutes
Venoms are becoming more toxic

Snake venom is a white or yellow-coloured liquid which is produced in glands behind the snake's eyes and is pumped down a duct to the fangs when it bites down on something or someone.

The fangs acts like a hypodermic needle, injecting the venom quickly and efficiently into the unsuspecting victim.

Snakes with fangs at the front of their mouths are most dangerous - such as the cobra, puff adder, viper, rattlesnake and mamba, for example.

The venom produced by the snake's ancient ancestor was relatively simple. But research suggests that it has diversified over time and now venoms are more complex and more toxic than ever before.

Venoms can vary, even within snake species and within the same country, causing different effects on the body and responding differently to the same anti-venom.

Children are at a particularly high risk of snake bites
Children are at a particularly high risk of snake bites
Does a snakebite hurt?

It does, apart from when you don't know you've been bitten.

Snakes called kraits, which live in south Asia, have a painless bite. They are known for slithering into homes when the inhabitants are asleep, usually on beds on the floor.

The victim might be disturbed a little but is likely to go back to sleep, and in the morning they wake up paralysed - or not at all.

For most other snakes, there's the pain felt from the initial bite, as the fangs sink into the skin, and then the pain created by the venom as it starts to work - causing inflammation, clotting the blood, causing skin cells to self-destruct.

Sucking out venom is not advised

There are plenty of myths about how to deal with being bitten by a snake, so don't be fooled.

There is no evidence at all that sucking out venom from a snakebite with the mouth or using any other suction device helps. In fact, experts say it could hasten the venom's passage into the bloodstream.

Cutting out the venom is not recommended either because it could make the wound much worse.

In some countries, especially in remote areas where health services are scarce, natural remedies are often used to try to treat the bites but this only delays how long it takes to get to hospital.

After a bite, victims should not move the affected limb unless they have to, keep their heart rate as low as possible until they reach hospital and receive the appropriate anti-venom treatment, ideally as quickly as possible.
