vickybby:Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you found these rips interesting. |
Ogamysamo:Please do start writing again. I hope to read your work someday. |
Creative writing is one of the most demanding jobs one can have. It goes without saying that many writers lose steam along the way, abandoning writing altogether or even choosing a different job that is easier to do. From experience, I see that motivation is what keeps one going when the days are dark. But how does one stay motivated to write when faced with discouraging events that seem to make it hard to sit your butt down and write? The following points might help. DEFINE YOUR WRITING GENRE AND STICK TO IT I see a lot of nairaland writers passing themselves off as being able to write all genres. That's the number one mistake most writers make. Every writer, whether they are conscious of it or not, has a unique writing style that differentiates them from others. Identify yours and develop it because that's your unique selling point. Delving into areas you're not so good at will only serve to make your work unappealing and unoriginal. Ultimate, it will make you lose motivation. Don't try to be a jack-of-all-trade writer. However, this is not to say that you should limit yourself to just one genre if you have the talent and the capacity to do more. Only be sure to identify your areas of strength and maximize your potential in that area. That way, you'll always stay motivated. LET YOUR EXPECTATIONS BE REASONABLE Having unrealistic expectations about writing can serve to lower your motivation if those expectations are not met. As a newbie, don't be driven by the desire to make quick money. Focus more on honing and perfecting your writing skills and the money will come. SET A REALISTIC TARGET FOR YOURSELF I find that people work harder when they have deadlines or targets to meet up with. To stay motivated as a writer, you always need that little extra push that keeps you at your desk when your body feels like it needs to be drinking beer at the bar. If possible set a daily target of, say 500 words, along with a long-term target of, say 3 books in a year. This will push you to keep writing to meet up with these targets. But in all, don't set a target for yourself that will be impossible to meet up with because that can also cause you to lose motivation. KNOW YOUR LIMITS As a writer, perhaps your greatest gift is a sharp, intuitive mind that continuously churns out it's ideas. Learn to ease your mind by taking it off work for a while. To keep your mind sharp, get enough rest. Enjoy nature by going to the park or zoo. Do whatever it is you do to unwind. Sometimes, having fun has a way of triggering creative ingenuity. It's not all about work, you know. CONNECT WITH THE SUPERNATURAL As a writer of Christian literature, I find that connecting with God brings out the best in me. I don't mean going to church or indulging in church activities. I mean making out time to study your Bible and let God minister to you through His word. As odd as it sounds, finding a secluded spot to study and meditate on the word of God can open you up to spheres of creativity that you never thought possible. Try it and see if it works for you. As they say, "Different strokes for different folks." If there's something else that keeps you motivated as a writer, feel free to share it with us as a comment. |
Obi and Kwankwaso will make a pretty strong team. The alliance will split the imaginary 8million Kano votes by more than half, tipping the scales in their favour. |
It's been a long time coming. This horse is finally dead. The lesson in this is that change is the only constant thing in nature and whoever fails to flow with the tide gets swept by it. The management team of this old bank failed to adjust to the current realities of modern banking and paid dearly for that grave mistake. |
JSayin:You are not alone. I'm a published author on Amazon yet unable to buy or download my own books from Amazon. It's quite pathetic how Nigerians are treated like creatures from another planet and nothing can be done about it. The Amazon android app doesn't work in Nigeria. It's the sad reality of What Nigerians go through. I'm not sure this is going to change any time soon. |
Interesting writeup. Creating a fictional world is no mean feat. This is why creative writers should be celebrated. |
PavillionEnergy:Powerful lyrics. |
Nothing can be further from the truth. Going by the dictionary definition of the word experience, this assertion is wrong. As proof, here's how the oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines experience. 1. The effect upon the judgment or feelings produced by any event, whether witnessed or participated in; personal and direct impressions as contrasted with description or fancies; personal acquaintance; actual enjoyment or suffering. It was an experience he would not soon forget. 2. (countable) An activity one has performed. (countable) A collection of events and/or activities from which an individual or group may gather knowledge, opinions, and skills. 3. (uncountable) The knowledge thus gathered. (obsolete, uncountable) Trial; a test or experiment. |
Music, without a doubt, plays a major role in Christian worship. For this reason, many Christians draw inspiration from the lyrics of popular Christian songs. For me, here's a short list of songs that help me enjoy a melodious Christian life. Way Maker by Spinach Miye Ruwe by Frank Edwards Jesus Take a the Wheels by Carrie Underwood Jesus at the Centre by Eben Be Revealed by Elijah Oyelade All that Matters by GUC You Say by Lauren Daigle Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) by Kirk Franklin Share your favourite Christian song to inspire someone today. |
succyblinks:Interesting post indeed. But I see a lot of people reacting emotionally and in the process, miss the important facts carefully presented here. The way the facts are presented in this post may leave a lot to be desired but they are hard facts all the same. If I understand the post clearly, a newbie has to learn the ropes by starting small or picking up gigs with small pay and in the process, gain enough experience that will get him gigs with higher pay. That makes sense to me. The truth is that not everyone who claims to be a writer is good at the art. To get better, you need to hone your skills daily through the small gigs that come your way rather than get distracted by those who give you misleading information about writing. For newbies, if anyone tells you it's impossible to write high quality content of 5000 words a day, it's a lie. On a good day, I write more than that but it depends on certain factors such as: - Do you have all day to write or do you have limited time each day to write? For me, the nature of my job offers me a lot of time to write. - Are you passionate about what you write or you just write for the sake of it? For me, I write only Christian content and it's something I'm passionate about so it follows naturally that I never run out of ideas. Instead of stretching yourself thin by writing on several niches, why not focus your energy on one in which you never lack ideas to write about? -Do you write and edit at the same time or do you finish your writing before editing? I find that correcting my work as I write causes me to lose concentration. I write as fast as I can so I don't interrupt the flow of ideas and only make correction when I'm done writing. - Do you get distracted by other activities or not. When I sit down to write, nothing takes my attention from it until I'm done. One very important point most writers miss is that until you play in the big leagues, you can't make a living by writing. As an aspiring or newbie writer, don't expect to make it big within a short time. Get a job that pays the bills but gives you time to write. Write for passion and not for money untill the passion brings in the big bucks. That way, you won't be discourage if the big bucks don't come when you expect. This is my humble submission. I hope it helps someone determine what's best for them. |
Unseen:I strongly urge you not to drop that idea. That's how pdfdrive.com operates. It might surprise you to know that much money can be made from a site that offers free books for readers to download. You can make much money from adverts on the site and from donations made to the site. |
jesusjnr2020:These guys inspire me to stand up for the truth no matter what. Serving God will not always be easy as many will have you believe. |

For those of us who are not regular church goers, gather here and let's learn the Bible from each other. My favourite scripture is Romans 8:32 "He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" (King James Version) This scripture never fails to remind me of God's unconditional love. When the days get dark, I open my Bible to this scripture to remind myself that God is always with me and He cares about me. What's your favourite Bible verse? Share with us so others can learn a thing or two. |
Been celibate for almost seven years now. It has not been easy but I believe sex should only be enjoyed in marriage. Worldliness and moral perversion has made it look like it's ok to have sex outside of marriage but it's not. Until you're married, keep yourself. |
It's a shame that the youth who have been at the receiving end of the bad leadership of the old are the ones clamouring to keep these old men in power. The end sars protest has not shown us that the youth need to take their destiny into their hands. the Covid-19 pandemic has not opened our eyes to the fact that these old men are not ready to develop our country. until the youth decide to rise above their differences and forge a common front to take over power from the old, the change we dream of will only be a mirage. Any youth who desire a holistic and systematic change will not campaign for people like Tinubu, Osinbanjo, Jonathan or any of those who have not done much as past leaders. |
Africa my Africa Plagued by bad leadership at all levels Hunted by inadequate infrastructure Driven to the fringes of extinction by hunger, poverty, malnutrition and disease Blessed with the most natural resources yet cursed by the atrocities of its bad leaders A land where the cry of its inhabitants wets the ground daily A place that consumes its young where the youth groan under the tyranny of the old Where the young never grow to take their place as leaders A place where tomorrow is not assured Africa, a land with so much yet yielding little for its poor I dream of the day Africa will take her place in the world. |
Here we go again. New day, new travel. The president with the most replaced body parts. |
According to psychology, of two past lovers still remain friends after a breakup, it's either they are still in love or never were. |
All sane people will speak against this needless conflict driven by power-hungry politicians. Ultimate, if there is a war, these leaders will be safe in their palaces while innocent people who had no hand in the events that started the war will be at the receiving end. Let all parties exercise extreme caution. |
Puting has bitten more than he can chew. Russia is fast losing allies. I hope all leaders exercise caution because a world still battling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic can not afford to be thrown into the chaos of a world war. At such times as this, what the world needs is peace and not another needless war. |
Puting and Hitler definitely have a thing or two in common. But the world has always risen against men like them in defense of freedom. Puting is fighting a lost cause. |
Of you ever find yourself accused of a crime in Nigeria and given the option of a free lawyer, never go for it. A free lawyer will take you straight to prison in no time. Funny enough, even the expensive ones sometimes don't seem to know what they are doing. Bottom line, avoid court cases in Nigeria. |
Comedian2019:The situation is indeed hopeless but don't give up. One way or another, God will help Nigerians. |
Interesting subject. Most people don't realise that they spend almost half of their life on their bed, sleeping or resting. Apart from this, the bed is where babies are made. So, if you're going to bring a baby into this world, you might as well do it on a good bed. If not, you might bring bad babies into the world and cause trouble for others. |
Democracy, though touted as the best form of government is, indeed one of the worst. This is because the crowd is not always right. For a country like Nigeria with an adult literacy level of 62.2, there are just too many idiots voting for the wrong people and that's why bad leaders keep finding themselves in power. In a democracy, if the majority decides to make a foolish change as we experienced in 2015, everyone else suffers the consequences of their stupidity. Now, tell me, how does a system of government that makes it possible to enforce the wrong change because the foolish majority said so become the best? |
My prayer for Nigeria is that all her enemies will be put to shame come 2023 in Jesus name. Amen! All the wicked politicians will evil intentions will not find their way anywhere near power in Jesus name. Amin! |
Whoever brags about being wise is really not. All wise people exhibit their wisdom quietly and are never noisy or offensive about it. Only fools try to prove a point about being wise. |
It's not only women that cheat, men also cheat. Cheating is not a gender thing but a natural inclination of the unregenerate nature of humans. If you have never done it before, raise your hand up in the air. |
