PoliticsObasanjo Speaks On Secrets Of His Longevity by mirinder(op): 3:09pm On Sep 05, 2021
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says his addiction to the game of Squash is one of the secrets behind his longevity.

He spoke on Saturday during the finals of the 3rd Olusegun Obasanjo National Squash Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The championship attracted participants from different states of Nigeria.

It was organized by Ogun State Squash Association in collaboration with Nigeria Squash Federation.

Obasanjo in his remarks, described squash, believed to be game of the army, as interesting and exciting.

The 84-year-old player said the grace of God and the game of squash are secrets of his longevity.

“Those of you who probably feel that the game of squash is something that is fearful, you can now see the beauty,
excitement and the interest. It is a very beautiful game.”

“I am addicted to it. And when people ask me, at my young age… I am a young man, officially 84 going to 85 years. I’m still playing squash. So, when people ask me, what is the secret? It’s the grace of God and squash is part of the secret.

“Again, it is a game that does not require too much time. If you are a very busy person, when you play a game of squash for one hour, you must be sweating. There are other games, when you play them for three hours, you don’t even know that you are playing a game. But here, you are in the court for 45, 50 or 60 minutes, you have got a good exercise for the day.”

Obasanjo expressed his gladness over young talents in the participation and charged them to strive more for excellence.

He also applauded the participants, sponsor and the officials for making the tournament “interesting and successful.”

Meanwhile, Mistura Durosinoluwa from Kwara State, has emerged the winner of under 16 category of the tourney.

Mistura defeated Delight Allison from Akwa Ibom State by three straight set in the final of the Championship played at the Olusegun Obasanjo Squash court in Abeokuta.

Durosinoluwa, who won under 16 girls category and Dominion Ntupe from Lagos, the winner in the boys category attributed the victory to hard work.

Number two seeded player in the championship from Delta state, Busayo Olatunji, defeated number one player, Rofiat Abdulazeez from Kwara state 11-8, 8-11, 11-3 and 11-7 to emerge winner in the senior women category.

PoliticsPhilippine Airlines Files For Bankruptcy by mirinder(op): 11:41am On Sep 04, 2021
Philippine Airlines said Saturday it was filing for bankruptcy in the United States to slash $2 billion in debt as it tries to survive an industry gutted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The national carrier of the Philippines said the filing will allow it to restructure contracts and cut debt by at least $2 billion while getting $655 million in fresh capital when it emerges from the Chapter 11 process.

PAL will also downsize its fleet by 25 per cent and re-negotiate contracts to reduce lease payments.

“Philippine Airlines will continue business-as-usual operations while finalising the restructuring of our network, fleet and organisation,” senior vice president and chief financial officer Nilo Thaddeus Rodriguez said in a video message.

As part of agreements reached with suppliers, lenders and lessors, Rodriguez said PAL will secure $505 million to execute the recovery plan. The money will later convert into airline equity and long-term debt.

It will also obtain another $150 million in debt funding after it emerges from the restructuring process “in a few months”, Rodriguez said.

Philippine air travel volume collapsed by 75 per cent from about 30 million passengers in 2019 to seven million last year due to pandemic restrictions, PAL president Gilbert Santa Maria said in the same video.

The carrier cancelled more than 80,000 flights, wiping out $2 billion in revenue, and let go of 2,300 employees.

Its main shareholder injected more than $130 million in emergency liquidity and a non-strategic asset was sold for more than $70 million.

Santa Maria said PAL now operates 21 per cent of pre-pandemic flights to 70 per cent of its usual destinations.

PoliticsAkeredolu Dismisses 2023 Presidential Posters by mirinder(op): 1:44pm On Sep 02, 2021
Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has distanced himself from campaign activities suggesting his interest in the 2023 presidential race.

He cautioned the promoters not to distract him from delivering electoral promises to the people.

The governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, said he had nothing to do with the pseudo campaigners.

Campaign posters and fliers urging Governor Akeredolu to contest the 2023 presidential election have gone viral on the social media.

Some of the posters depicted an Akeredolu/Buni joint APC ticket.

But Governor Akeredolu described the action as a “needless distraction”.

The statement said: “Undoubtedly, the development is no less a needless distraction. Although Mr. Governor’s constitutional right, qualification and competence are not in doubt, this particular campaign does not represent in any manner, his immediate political disposition.

“For emphasis, Governor Akeredolu, who has just been re-elected, wishes to be left alone to focus on deepening good governance in Ondo State.

“He, therefore, advises all involved to be guided, just as he holds the view that only God can put men in position.”

Politics322,000 Nigerian Refugees To Be Repatriated From Cameroon, Niger, Chad by mirinder(op): 10:15pm On Aug 27, 2021
A total of 322,000 Nigerian refugees currently living in neighbouring countries such as the Niger Republic, Cameroon and Chad are to be repatriated to the country. Sadiya Umar Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, has received a draft Tripartite Agreement for the voluntary repatriation.

Ms Farouq’s special assistant on media, Nneka Anibeze, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

The draft was submitted tothe minister by the Technical Working Group on the repatriation of Nigerian Refugees in Cameroon.

The draft after its ratification would kick start preparations for the repatriation of refugees from the Republic of Niger and Chad.

Ms Farouq, after receiving the draft noted that a total of 322,000 Nigerian refugees were currently living in neighbouring countries.

“Out of the figures, the Republic of Niger currently hosts 186,957 refugees; the Republic of Cameroon has 118,409 while 16,634 refugees are in the Republic of Chad.

“With a large number of refugees in Niger, Chad and Cameroon, the federal government has officially initiated talks with the governments of Chad and Niger to sign tripartite agreements similar to the one we have with the Republic of Cameroon.

“I am happy to inform you that we already have a draft copy of the Tripartite Agreement for Voluntary Repatriation of Nigerian Refugees in Niger and Chad Republics,” she said.

Speaking, the Federal Commissioner at the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Iman Suleiman-Ibrahim, thanked the minister for the confidence reposed in her.

Ms Suleiman-Ibrahim sought the cooperation of all partners in efforts to bring back the refugees in safety and dignity.

“Part of the governance infrastructure for carrying out this exercise includes that of the Borno Government and some selected Federal Government’s MDAs as well as the UNHCR, our invaluable Technical partners.

“It goes without saying that we need to work in synergy to ensure a successful voluntary repatriation in line with the Presidential directive,” Ms Suleiman-Ibrahim said.

Foreign AffairsTaliban: Al- Qaeda, ISIS Expanding In Africa, UN Warns by mirinder(op): 8:40am On Aug 20, 2021
Two decades after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, U.S, terror networks – Al-Qaida and Islamic State – continue to pose a grave threat to peace and security globally, especially in Africa, a top UN counter-terrorism expert has said.

UN counter-terrorism chief Vladimir Voronkov told the Security Council on Thursday at UN headquarters, New York, that terrorist groups had been adapting to new technologies and moving into some of the world’s most fragile regions.

While Al-Qaida and Islamic State remain focused on reconstituting their capabilities in Iraq and Syria, Mr Vornkov said the groups’ relentless spread across the African continent in recent months was the most alarming development.

The so-called “Islamic State in the Greater Sahara” has killed several hundred civilians since the start of 2021 in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

The group’s “West Africa Province” will likely gain from the weakening of Boko Haram, with an additional spillover of terrorists and foreign fighters from Libya.

Meanwhile, the expansion of Da’esh in Central Africa and especially in northern Mozambique could have far-reaching implications for peace and security in the region.

He briefed the council on the eve of the fourth commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, observed annually on August 21.

Mr Voronkov, while presenting the secretary-general’s latest report on the threats posed by terrorist groups, said Al-Qaida and Islamic State, also known as Da’esh, had continued to exploit the pandemic to use technology to regroup.

He noted that Da’esh continued to exploit the disruption, grievances, and development setbacks caused by the pandemic to regroup, recruit new followers and intensify its activities both online and on the ground.

“Today, we face transnational terrorist threats like Da’esh and Al-Qaida that are enduring and able to adapt to new
technologies,” Mr Voronkov explained. “But also expanding to include individuals and groups that commit terrorist attacks connected to xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance.”

The UN counter-terrorism architecture, largely set up in there wake of the 9/11 attack, helps member states implement effective frameworks to prevent, address, investigate and prosecute acts of terrorism.

It is also ramping up efforts to help countries adapt to the rapidly changing nature of the threat, which has become
more digital and de-centralised in recent years.

“We will need to ensure that Afghanistan is never again used as a launching pad for global terrorism,” the UN official said.

PoliticsWith OBJ, Osibanjo’s Years As President, VP, SW Lacks Right For Presidency by mirinder(op): 6:30pm On Aug 03, 2021
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has said that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency in 2023, the South West Nigeria lacks the moral standard to aspire for Buhari’s successor after spending 8 years as President through Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2003) and as Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, (2015-2023).

Ohanaeze insisted that the Igbo are favored by all standards to occupy the Nigerian President in 2023 and urged other Nigerians to support the Igbo.

The group in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo World, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, condemned what he described as attempts by detractors of Ndigbo to blackmail her with the activities of Biafran agitators over Igbo presidency.

“The South West has no strong claim for presidency in 2023. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo led Nigeria as President from 1999 to 2007 while Professor Yemi Osibanjo will conclude 8 years as Vice President from 2015 to 2023. So, 2023 will be the turn of the Igbo to occupy the exalted office of the president.

“Ohanaeze condemns attempts to blackmail the Igbo with activities of Biafra agitators resurrect the rhetorical questions about the activities of other ethnic militia’s activities in the past. Did the activities of OPC stop Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s emergence in 1999?

Did the activities of the Niger Delta militants stop Dr Goodluck Jonathan from emerging the President in 2011? Did Boko Haram insurgents and bandits stop General Muhammadu Buhari in 2015?

“Since the activities of these groups did not stop the people from the aforementioned areas from emerging Presidents of Nigeria at different times, the rise of self-determination agitators from the South East will not stop the zone from producing the president in 2023.

Igbo Presidency in 2023 will rather assuage the burning flames of Biafra agitation and put Nigeria back on track for greater heights.”

Stressing that the coast is getting clearer for Igbo presidency in 2023, Ohanaeze Ndigbo tasked Igbo presidential aspirants to reach out to all political parties and geopolitical zones and build bridges of friendship and support.
