PoliticsIndependence Day: Akeredolu Pardons 18 Convicted Inmates In Ondo by mirinder(op): 11:47am On Oct 01, 2021
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has granted state pardon to 18 convicted inmates in various correctional centres in the state to mark Nigeria’s 61st Independence Day.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr. Richard Olatunde, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor and made available to newsmen in Akure on Friday.

The statement further said that Akeredolu also commuted the death sentences of 26 prisoners to life imprisonment adding that the gesture was in commemoration of Nigeria’s 61st Independence anniversary.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on him by Paragraph (d) of sub-section (1) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as Amended, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has granted State pardon to 18 convicted inmates.

“The governor also commutted to life imprisonment 26 other inmates who were condemned to death by the various courts in the state.

“The convicts were released having shown remorse and are of good conduct at the correctional centres,” the statement read.

While charging them to be of good conduct and live a crime-free life, the governor urged the public not to discriminate against them as they reintegrate into the society.

PoliticsBH Terrorists Now Training Bandits In Kaduna, Other NW States ― Military Sources by mirinder(op): 8:44pm On Sep 24, 2021
A large group of Boko Haram terrorists have moved out of their base in North-East Nigeria to join forces with criminal gangs and bandits in the nNorth-West where they are engaged in weapons training and kidnapping, military sources told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Friday.

Boko Haram’s Islamic State-allied rivals have been consolidating their grip on the North-East after the reported death of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, this year, in a major shift in Nigeria’s 12-year insurgency.

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has been moving into Boko Haram’s territory, fighting Shekau loyalists, assimilating some or forcing others to surrender to the armed forces, security sources say.

Details of the Boko Haram fighters moving could be the latest sign of cooperation between jihadists and criminal armed groups in the northwest, who raid and loot villages and conduct mass abductions for ransom.

Two military sources said a faction loyal to Shekau based in Borno State had dispatched two commanders and 250 fighters to the Rijana forests in Kaduna State.

Both commanders are allied with Bakoura Buduma, a Boko Haram chief who remains loyal to Shekau and whose fighters are resisting ISWAP consolidation, according to security sources.

“They are the masterminds behind some of the abductions in the northwest,” one of the military sources said.

Both sources said Boko Haram militants were also training the gangs, known locally as bandits, in the use of anti-aircraft guns and explosives and other weapons.

A military spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. Kaduna State officials also did not immediately reply to a request for confirmation.

A Nigerian security agency communique earlier this month had warned that a Boko Haram commander and foot soldiers were moving across the country from their base in Borno State to Kaduna State and other North-West states.

Analysts say there have been growing signs jihadists and bandit gangs are developing deeper ties where both stand to gain: Jihadists supply arms while profiting from criminal activity.

North-West Nigeria has long been plagued by the bandit groups, but this year, attacks and kidnappings have surged as the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic feeds criminality.

Criminal gangs have targetted schools in a series of high- profile mass abductions of students and pupils for ransom.

Attacks have also become more brazen. Last month armed criminals assaulted the country’s elite military college in Kaduna and kidnapped one officer while in June criminal gangs shot down an air force jet conducting operations on their camps.

Northwestern Zamfara State, neighbouring Kaduna, earlier this month began a military campaign against bandits and ordered a complete telecoms blackout in a bid to disrupt bandit communications.

PoliticsReps, Other Passengers Stranded At Kano Airport by mirinder(op): 1:32pm On Sep 23, 2021
Members of the House of Representatives were on Wednesday left stranded at the Kano International Airport by Azman Airline for hours, as officials allegedly absconded from the airport.

The lawmakers boarded Azman Airline for an official assignment with House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) and Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and waited for hours unattended to for a flight that was scheduled to take off at 12:30pm as the airline kept shifting the take-off time for over 12 hours.

Daily Trust gathered the flight was reportedly delayed from 12:30pm till 2:30pm, then till 6pm.

The flight time was again moved to 9:45pm, after which the lawmakers were told that they would leave at 12:15am on Thursday.

Officials of the airline are said to have failed to address the passengers on the cause of the delay.

Speaking on the matter, the House’s spokesman, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who was among the stranded passengers, expressed worry that airline operators, especially Azman Airlines have resolved to treat Nigerians without respect.

He said such was against the consumer protection law of the country, adding that if a passenger is delayed for two hours, the operators should reach out to their passengers.

He said: “It is important the people we represent know where we are and the National Assembly knows we are still stranded here and as we speak to you, nobody is at the counter to address us, not even the manager.”

Representative Kalu, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers, expressed concern that this is what the ordinary Nigerians pass through on a daily basis while travelling.

“We just came out to see the manager and other members are still inside.

“In the hall, a lot of Nigerians were left stranded; there are other Nigerians who are stranded and we are witnessing this firsthand and we are feeling it.

Some of the citizens were abandoned here.

“We are raising this call for common Nigerians; sometimes when citizens bring their complaints it appears as if they fabricated it.

“But this one we are involved and we are seeing this for ourselves,” the House’s spokesman noted.

“We have shown interest to find out from the Ministry of Aviation and Consumer Protection Council what is happening to the Aviation sector as soon as we return,” he added.

PoliticsSudanese Govt Foils Coup Attempt by mirinder(op): 10:00am On Sep 21, 2021
A coup attempt has been foiled in Sudan and the plotters arrested, officials have confirmed.

About 40 officers were arrested after attempting to take over the state broadcaster’s television buildings and the military general command, one senior government source said.

Interrogation of suspects involved in the attempted coup was due to begin and the military would issue a statement shortly, spokesman Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman said.

Sudan has been on a fragile path to democratic rule since the military’s ouster of the country’s longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, following four months of mass protests.

The country is now ruled by a joint civilian and military government that faces towering economic and security challenges.

Asharq News also reported that the plotters “tried to take control of the radio and television building” in Khartoum. Sudanese government says normalcy has returned to the country after the coup attempt.

PoliticsImportation Of Illicit Drugs, Arms Ends As Customs Gets Cargo Scanner by mirinder(op): 2:43pm On Sep 18, 2021
After many years of manual examination of cargoes at the Onne seaport due to the breakdown of scanning machines, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Area ll Command, Onne Port, Rivers State, has taken delivery of a cargo mobile scanning machine for examination of cargoes.

The scanner, a product of Nuctech, was brought by Maersk Karun vessel from Shanghai in China with model number MT1213DE.

Recall that absence of scanners over the years have threatened trade facilitation, Customs revenue as well as led to importation of dangerous items such as arms, ammunition and illicit drugs into the country.

However, in a press statement by the public relations officer, Onne Customs Command, Ifeoma Ojekwu, she said the customs area controller of the Command, Comptroller Auwal Mohammed, described the arrival of the scanner as a positive milestone in the service efforts to modernise Customs operations, achieve ease of doing business, facilitate trade and enhance security with easier detection of prohibited imports.

Mohammed described the tortuous processes involved in physical examination as time consuming and may not be as perfect as when done with the scanner.

According to him, hitherto they were unable to examine more than a hundred containers daily but with the new scanner, it will be able to carry out examination on 200 containers on daily basis.

While receiving the machine, Mohammed said, “Before the arrival of the scanner, examinations of cargoes were usually done manually and physically, whereby containers were positioned by the terminal operators. Then they provide gang of labourers while officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and other agencies come for the examination.

“They cut off the seal manually, and then the contents inside containers are discharged manually by the labourers.

Then, inspection or examinations are conducted by officers and other stakeholders.

“This takes time sometimes because of the packing of the good in the container; and this is an examination that is done to confirm the declaration made by the agent or importer tallies with the content of the container.

“Virtually everything has to be carried or moved out of the container, then back into the container before examination is concluded. So it is cumbersome. It is time consuming, and not much containers are properly examined on a daily basis.

“So with the coming of the scanner, which is a non-intrusive examination apparatus, examination will now be conducted with the use of x-ray.”

The Controller added that already trained Customs officers on scanning operation will undergo refresher training to update them on the latest technology.

According to him, any consignment found during image analysis to be containing suspected prohibition or concealments will be quickly referred for physical examination.

He also thanked the CGC, Hamed Ali, for his unrelenting drive in modernising the Nigeria Customs Service.

PoliticsMany Nigerian Soldiers Killed In Fresh Boko Haram Ambush In Borno by mirinder(op): 11:52am On Sep 16, 2021
A yet-to-be confirmed number of soldiers have been killed and several others missing after an ambush by militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād in Borno State.

SaharaReporters gathered that the attack took place in Monguno on Thursday.

Monguno is over 100km north of Maiduguri, the state capital and hosts thousands of Internally Displaced Persons, mostly from Dikwa and Marte council areas.

“We lost so many soldiers during the attack that lasted for many hours. May their souls rest in peace,” a military source told SaharaReporters.

The source added that military vehicle, several weapons and ammunition were stolen during the attack.

Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, have killed thousands and displaced millions in
northeastern Nigeria.

The Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency has been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.

In the past months, soldiers have been targeted by the insurgents.

Hundreds of soldiers and officers have been reportedly killed since January 2021.

Some soldiers were killed during the year when two explosive-laden vehicles rammed into a military convoy in Wulgo.

The suicide bombers were identified as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Bana Jundullah.

The group also claimed four military vehicles were destroyed.

In February, about 20 soldiers were also killed in Malari, Borno State by the insurgents.

SaharaReporters gathered that the soldiers were on patrol to clear some Boko Haram elements in the area following
credible intelligence when they were ambushed by the group.

PoliticsUche Ogah: Private Jets Used For Gold Smuggling by mirinder(op): 7:22am On Sep 15, 2021
The Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Ogah, has said private jets are being used for gold smuggling in Nigeria.

Ogah stated this at an investigative hearing on $9 billion annual loss to illegal mining and smuggling of gold, organised by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Mines, Steel Development and Metallurgy.

He also advocated capital punishment for offenders.

“Gold smuggling in Nigeria is often done using private jets, the very reason why private jets ownership and operations need to be streamlined in the country,” he said.

He said gold smuggling and illegal mining are robbing the country of billions of dollars on a yearly basis.

According to him, the menace thrives due to the connivance of security agencies with the offenders, host communities’ collaboration, low level of application of technology and negative mindsets of Nigerians to Nigeria.

“For these crimes to be fought decisively, potent punitive measures like capital punishment need to be legally provided for,” he said.

He added that the menace could be tackled proactively through the establishment of mines police, special court or tribunals to try offenders, adequate funding for the ministry and positive mindsets of Nigerians to Nigeria.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Tanko Al-Makura (APC, Nasarawa), said heads of relevant government agencies would be summoned for a thorough investigation into illegal mining and gold smuggling.

He listed the agencies to include: Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

PoliticsCBN To Establish Nigerian International Financial Center by mirinder(op): 1:03pm On Sep 14, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it will soon establish the Nigerian International Financial Centre (NIFC)
to serve as a gateway for capital and investments for Nigeria.

The centre will be driven by technology and payment system infrastructure, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele disclosed this on Tuesday morning at the ongoing 14th annual banking and finance conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Abuja.

“Central Bank, will, in the next 12 months be establishing The Nigerian International Financial Centre (NIFC). The NIFC will act as an international gateway for Capital and investments, driven by technology and payment system infrastructure,” the CBN governor said.

The new financial hub, he said, will curate local and international banks to make them global champions.

According to Emefiele, the NIFC will be a 24/7 financial centre that will complement London, New York and Singapore financial centers and enable an acceleration of Nigeria’s home grown initiatives such as the Infracorp plc, the N15 trillion infrastructure fund which we will be launched in October 2021.

He said the NIFC will also complement other CBN initiatives on the Nigerian Commodity Exchange and the National Theatre creative hubs for Nigerian youths as well as the e-Naira project which he said will also debut in October 2021.

“The NIFC will take advantage of our existing laws such as the BOFIA 2020, NEPZA and other CBN regulations to create a fully global investment and financial hub where monies, ideas, and technology will move freely without hindrance,” Emefiele said.

PoliticsKabba Prison Attack: Most Of The Escaped Inmates Re-Arrested - Kogi Govt by mirinder(op): 11:49pm On Sep 13, 2021
The kogi State Government says majority of prisoners who escaped from the Kabba Custodial Centre following attack on the facility by gunmen, have been re-arrested.

The government said it has confidence in the ability of the country’s security agencies to unmask those behind the attack on Kabba Custodial Centre.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo said this in a statement confirming the sttack in Lokoja on Monday.

Fanwo said investigations were still on to clearly ascertain the number of inmates that escaped from the Centre. He however said two security operatives were killed by the gunmen.

“The State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd) is currently at the Centre with the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and the Commander, Army Records, Lokoja.

“Security Agencies have zeroed in to ensure those who escaped are rearrested as well as trail the masterminds of the attack.

“We have confidence in our security agencies to unmask the masterminds responsible for the attack and get them
apprehended.

“Our security network has led to the rearrest of majority of the inmates that escaped as some have also come back to the centre on their own.

“Security agencies, traditional rulers and local hunters are working in synergy to ensure normalcy.

“We urge Kogi citizens and citizens of neighbouring states to help volunteer information that will ensure the apprehension of the masterminds of the dastardly act.

“Our people should go about their normal businesses as security agencies are doing their best to ensure security of lives and property in the face of the unfortunate breach,” he said.

It would be recalled that unknown gunmen on Monday night, attacked the correctional facility in Kabba, headquarter of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, LGA killing some security operatives and setting more than two hundreds inmates free.

PoliticsReno Reacts To Reported Attack On Military Base, Says Bandits Now ‘terrorists’ by mirinder(op): 8:38am On Sep 13, 2021
A socio-political activist, Reno Omokri has expressed scepticism over the alleged attack on a military base in Zamfara State where about 9 Air Force officers, 2 policemen and 1 soldier were reportedly killed.

There have been reports that armed men suspected to be bandits, on Saturday attacked the Forward Operating Base in Mutumji, Dansadau Local Government of Zamfara State and gunned down some military officers, including policemen.

DAILY POST learnt that unspecified number of the assailants were also neutralized during the attack.

Reacting, in a post on his Facebook page, Reno said he hopes that the report is not true, stressing that if the attack is confirmed to be true, the bandits should be renamed “radical jihadists terrorists”.

His post reads, “I sincerely hope the reports that bandits overran a military base in Zamfara yesterday, and killed 9 airforce officers, 2 policemen and 1 soldier is untrue.

“But if it is, then the time has come to stop calling these people bandits and start calling them by their real name, radical jihadists terrorists.

“Where is safe in Nigeria? Nowhere! General Buhari went to the Southeast to promise Ohana’eze Ndi’Igbo security. Is Katsina secure? Is Zamfara safe? Is Sokoto peaceful?

“If he can’t secure his own region, then is it the Southeast he will secure? Buhari himself is part of the problem!”

PoliticsAbducted Niger Traditional Ruler Regains Freedom by mirinder(op): 11:29am On Sep 11, 2021
The district head of Wawa also known as Dodo of Wawa in Borgu Emirate, Borgu local government area of Niger State, Alhaji Mahmud Ahmed Aliyu has been released by his abductors.

A statement issued and made available to journalists on Saturday in Minna by the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mary Noel- Berje confirmed the development.

It will be recalled that the District head was recently abducted at his palace in Wawa, Borgu Emirate in Niger State recently by some gunmen suspected to be armed bandits.

The statement added that the embattled District head was said to have been released without payment of ransom to
his abductors.

A family member also confirmed in a telephone interview with Tribune Online that the embattled District head of Wawa community in Borgu Emirate of Borgu Local Government Area of the state was released about 7.30 pm on Friday by his abductors.

A top title holder in Wawa, Mallam Bala Gala told the newsmen that “We are in celebration mood, the Dodo of Wawa who was picked up by the bandits last weekend has been released.

FoodBeware Of Reddish Palm Oil, NAFDAC Warns Nigerians by mirinder(op): 8:15am On Sep 10, 2021
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the consumption of foods and drugs which are injurious to their health.

The Director-General of the agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning during a sensitization campaign in the North Central zone held in Ilorin on Thursday.

The NAFDAC boss took the campaign to major markets and roads in Ilorin, the state capital.

She said the aim was to protect Nigerians against the negative effects of unwholesome food, fake medical products, harmful cosmetics, poor water and other substandard regulated products.

She said some market men and women, in an attempt to make profit, mixed palm oil with Azo dye, a cancer-causing agent, to make it look beautifully reddish and attractive to consumers.

“If you see any vegetable oil that sleeps, that is a potential killer because NAFDAC will never license any vegetable oil with that characteristic.

They also use sniper on meat, fish and beans to prevent fly from perching and eradicate weevils. Such products are
dangerous when they are consumed.

“The vegetable oil that has been transported in kerosene tanker is hazardous and using potassium bromide to bake bread kills slowly.

Consumption of excessive oil and use of formalin on food has its associated health hazards,” she warned.

Represented at the event by the Director, North Central of the agency, Mrs. Bolaji Abayomi, Prof Adeyeye also warned on the dangers of buying medicines from hawkers rather than licensed pharmacies and medicine stores.

She said the campaign theme was intended to address such public health challenges as abuse of codeine and self-medication, especially among youths.

She encouraged mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding for two years for the good health of their children, adding that low level of exclusive breastfeeding practice by lactating mothers will make the child susceptible to various diseases and low IQ.

“It is common knowledge that Nigeria has a preponderant share of the global problem of falsified medical products
and unwholesome food.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the problem with the challenge posed by substandard and falsified Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).

“The sensitization campaigns will therefore contribute significantly to the federal government’s efforts to inform,
sensitize, educate and alert the public about inherent dangers of intake and use of those spurious regulated products”, she stated.

in recent raid operations on the terrorists hideouts in parts of the North East.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement on
Thursday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said the troops of Sector 2, OPHK, arrested the wanted terrorist, Yawi Modu, and his cohorts along
Damboa-Wajiroko road.

He also disclosed that the troops raided the terrorists’ Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) materials hub in Damboa and Gashua Local Government Areas of Borno and Yobe States, respectively, during their operations.

“These ISWAP criminals facing the reality of obvious depletion are desperately acquiring IED materials to make
explosive devices with which to unleash terror on innocent civilians, in a bid to remain relevant and present a posture
of potency.

“In the sting operation conducted, a total of 281 (50Kg) bags of Urea were recovered from the warehouses in the
market and two notorious distributors were also arrested.

“Recall that Urea fertiliser has been banned by Government because of its use as a major component for manufacturing IED by terrorists.

Oyedele also disclosed that the company has constructed and commissioned over 350 injection substations with a combined capacity of about 3540MW across the country.

In addition, his stated that the company since its inception in 2004 till date has also constructed a total of 18 substations.

“NDPHC since its inception has completed 2,194km and 887km of 330kV and 132kV Transmission Lines respectively.

This is in addition to completed ten (10) new 330/132kV Substations and eight (cool new 132/33kV Substations which are connected to the National Grid thus significantly added 5590MVA and 3493MVA capacities at 330kV and 132kV levels respectively.

“NDPHC has constructed and commissioned over 350 Injection Substations with a combined capacity of about 3540MW across the length and breadth of this country.

“NDPHC has further constructed about 2600km of 11KV and 4600km of 33kV distribution lines for improving access to electricity and quality of power supply to consumers.

“In the last 14 years, we have been able to build generation stations to the capacity of 5000MW. I know that you know that up to date moment, the whole of Nigeria did not take up to 5000MW. So, if you add 5000MW, it means we have doubled the generation capacity of Nigeria.

“Right now, we have over 10 projects that are at the 99 percent completed. The contribution of the NDPHC, like I said, in one of the interviews, if you remove all the lines constructed by NDPHC, Nigeria will probably be in darkness”, Oyedele said.

Performing the groundbreaking ceremony of the project, the Ekiti state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who noted that the power supply to the state was grossly inadequate, stated that the substation when completed will bridge the supply gap in the state.

Fayemi, who appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari and management of the NDPHC for the project, called for its early completion.

The Olujodo of Ido-Ekiti, Oba Ayorinde Ilori Faboro, in an interview with journalists, expressed his appreciation to the government and NDPHC, disclosing that with the project, businesses that had relocated from the community would come back.

“First of all, I am grateful to the government of the federation, for siting the substation here. Electricity is very
important to us. We have suffered a lot. Right now, I am using a generator and I have spent a lot of money on diesel.

The money that I should be using for my upkeep, I am spending it on generators.

“So, with this substation here and with the promise that it will improve electricity supply to my town, I am very happy.

I am also grateful to the governor of Ekiti state, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and all those who made it
happened.

“I know that with good electricity, the businesses that have relocated from this town because of poor electricity will come back. It is a good thing that has come to my town.

“We are 13 communities in Ido-Osi Local Government and all the communities will benefit from this project. Now, we are getting our light from Omu’Aran (Kwara state). When the light is coming, it will first step down at Otun, when Otun is happy, they will give light to Aiyetoro along the road; when Aiyetoro is happy, they will pass the light to Usi, when Usi is happy, they will give us light.

So, sometimes in a week, we don’t have light. In a month, we hardly get up to 50 hours of electricity, which is very poor. But with this substation, we will not be waiting for these people to ration us light. Rather, we will now have power here and still give to other communities”, the monarch said.
