oyatz: Its like you are impervious to reason. 1)I said no city/State develop because of a single factor and gave you interaction of factors but you keep shifting the goals, shouting oil money now, then claiming its the FG and now the British later.
2) Lagos has been a maritime city for over 500 years, this factor make it a destination for many peoples from diverse backgrounds; Portuguese, British, Germans, Americans, returned slaves, Arabs/Muslim missionaries and peoples from other African empires/kingdoms
3) Through out history, areas that are receptacles for diverse peoples often provide fertile grounds for cross fertilization of ideas, exchange of skills and articles of trade with improved civilization.
4) The peoples and leaders of Lagos made and are still making tremendous contribution to the development of the city... Whether you are willing to give them credit for it or not doesn't detract from this fact.
5) The British only settled on Lagos Island, a very small part of Lagos state... It wasn't the business or interest of the British colonialists to develop Lagos or Nigeria as a whole, colonialism was an economic venture!
6) The old federal capital was limited to only 5LGAs (Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Eti-Osa, Apapa and a part of Surulere) and it is not exactly the same as Lagos state. Ikeja, Mushin, Shomolu, Epe, Oshodi etc were never part of the federal capital.
7) The Federal capital has been relocated for over a quarter of a century ,yet Lagos has developed more than when it was the capital.
The South south States and Kano State receive great fund from 'oil money' than Lagos.
Oil money alone doesn't explain the development of any city/country. Both Brazil and Nigeria are oil producing countries but Brazil is ahead of Nigeria virtually in all aspects

Did the FG also crossed into the the SW region in the mainland and established the industrial estates responsible for Lagos's strong economy and still represent Nigerians industrial strength from Apapa to matori, ilupeju, mushin and ikeja industrial estates all in less than 7 years?
Did the FG also crossed into the SW starting from Lagos mainland to establish Oodua investment groups and built Airport hotel, Webaboard aka Wema Bank and so on or

oyatz: No city/ Statedevelop because of one single reason and development is not static, it is very dynamic... That's why a fishing village of Dubai in 1960 can be a World class city in 2017. Lagos' development is due to a complex interraction of the forces of its GEOGRAHY, lts people &leaders and Political fortune.
Why was Lagos made the Capital of Nigeria upon almagamation in 1914, why not Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Benin city, Warri or Ilorin?..
Aug 6,1861: Lagos treaty of cession signed between the British Government and Oba Dosunmu of Lagos, so Lagos already had British administration between 1861- 1914 (53 years) and was more developed than the rest of Nigeria.
Before 1914, Lagos had street lights, drainage systems, telephone, electricity, postal services, hospitals, schools, churches & mosques, shops and a fairly educated populace .
Get education, read widely, be an informed mind...its in your best interest.
Cheers. You just said it, you fell into my trap. As U said, oyatz: Lagos' development is due to a complex interaction of the forces of its geography, its people & leaders and Political fortune. U answered it urself oyatz: Aug 6,1861: Lagos treaty of cession signed between the British Government and Oba Dosunmu of Lagos, so Lagos already had British administration between 1861- 1914 (53 years) and was more developed than the rest of Nigeria. The British (NOT YORUBAS) made Lagos so fine that it became the capital of Nigeria. From the moment it became the capital of modern Nigerian it started enjoying oil money. |
Politics › Re: Asari Dokubo: "Lagos Will Be Nothing Without Ijaw Oil" (Video Interview) by misano(m): 7:56pm On Jul 04, 2017 |
deomelo: 1. The FG picked Lagos state as the FC because Lagos was already developed before Nigeria as a country and independence.
2. Lagos as the FC was limited to Lagos island and the mainland was Western Region
3. Industries developed Lagos before oil and before independence.
4. The industries were and are still today on the mainland
5. The industrial estates that made Lagos state and responsible for overall Nigerian industrial capacity were build by the Western Region government led by Awolowo from Apapa industrial estate to Matori, Mushin, Ilupeju and Ikeja industrial estates and hey were all built with cocoa and rubber money, not oil money.
6. Oil money did not build the 1st skyscraper, 1st TV station, 1st stadia in Nigeria, cocoa and rubber money did.
7. The FG left Lagos decades ago and you people are still talking about a FC when in fact Lagos state have moved forward since, they've had many governors with vision, they built many many times more than the ordinary bridge, seaport or airport you people cry about all the time.
8. Fashola alone built more infrastructures in Lagos state than what the FG built in the whole of Nigeria within the same period.
9. While you and your leaders in the SE and the FDG cry and fight over 2nd NB for 30 years, Fashola built the best bridge in Nigeria aka Lekki Ikoyi bridge in less than 3 years.
10. What was the economy in Lagos like when the FG was in Lagos for just a few years compared to today?
11. Within Fashola's 8 years alone, the IGR grew from measly N500 million to N23 billion/month, double more than what many states in Nigeria generate in a year.
12. The leadership, vision and foresight in the SW before independence and after till today are the reason why Lagos state is what it is today, the good and capable leadership you don't have in the SE. Your leaders in the SE can not even collectively build common 2nd NB after 30 years of begging, but Fashola alone built many bridges while your leaders are siting on their hands, begging and crying and moaning marginalization.
13. What were your village leaders doing when Fashola lobbied Dangote to invest $15 billion refinery in Lagos? No, you were abusing, insulting Fashola and shouting corruption, but Fashola and lagosians are getting the last laugh while you keep crying, begging, abusing and insulting other people. 1) According to Wikipedia, the British influence (NOT TINUBU'S INFLUENCE) in Lagos began on 6 August 1861 under the threat of force by Commander Beddingfield of HMS Prometheus who was accompanied by the Acting British Consul, William McCoskry . 2) According to Wikipedia, The High Commissioner / Governor was Sir Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, between 1914–1919 and in 1948–1954 the commissioner was Sir John Stuart Macpherson (NOT AWOLOWO OR ANY OTHER YORUBA MAN) 3) According to Wikipedia, Lagos became the capital of Nigeria since its amalgamation in 1914 moved to Abuja in 1991 (HOW MANY YEARS IS THAT). 4) Wikipedia explains that Lagos was governed directly by the Federal Government from 1960 through the Lagos City Council until the creation of Lagos State in 1967. 5) And finally, according to Wikipedia, oil was first discovered in Oloibiri, Bayelsa on Sunday 15 January 1956 by Shell Darcy. So between 1960 to 1967 when the Federal Government governed Lagos, the city was enjoying Bayelsa oil money. |

f) First Sky scrapper in Sub Saharan Africa, Cocoa house, Ibadan in 1964.
g) Odua textiles was built in Ado-Ekiti in the 1950s before any textile factory in Lagos
2) Lagos is NOT Ekiti/Ibadan and Ibadan or Ekiti can NOT be Lagos... Every town/State is unique.
3) Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and Delta States receive greater federal allocation than Lagos.
4) Your understanding of development and oil economy is grossly limited. 5) Get education sir, its never too late Where did U come from? U just keep beating around D bush. oyatz: The problems with people like you is that, you get high with a dangerous blend of politics, tribalism, ignorance and pseudo-economics. Politics and tribalism (sustained on ignorance) mix well but but not with economics. 1) The oil companies HQs are not even in Nigeria to start with. 2) If Nigeria divides to whatever number, the oil in the Niger delta will still have to be drilled, explored and exported by those who have the capital, technical experience and managerial capacities, not necessarily Ijaw,Itshekiri, Ogoni or Ikwerre tribal chiefs or militants... This is the reason why we still depend on multinational oil companies to extract the oil in Nigeria.
3)Oil companies don't have to be in only countries that have crude oil Are you aware there are many crude oil refineries in India and Singapore with out one litre of crude oil? Oil refineries are like cassava processing mills, they can be located anywhere in as much as the owners can get cassava from any markets to process... Oil refineries can purchase crude oil from international market ,refine it and sell the products anywhere they like, it doesn't have to involve Niger Delta. 4) Otedola deals with downstream sector of the oil I.e importing and distribution of petroleum products...bombing of oil pipelines will rather increase his wealth because electricity supply will drop and more people/companies will depend on (Imported) diesel to run heavy duty generators. 5) Distingeration of Nigeria will make Lagos richer than what it is now...its a topic for another day/post. Cheers Chai, U just make me weak.... I will tell U something here, Lagos is what it is today because of one major reason. It was one time D capital of Nigeria. Just like Abuja is just fine & developed with oil money that same way Lagos was developed with oil money. If U think I'm wrong tell your people to make Ibadan, and Ekiti the next Lagos. |
Politics › Re: Asari Dokubo: "Lagos Will Be Nothing Without Ijaw Oil" (Video Interview) by misano(m): 11:11am On Jul 04, 2017 |
oyatz: So, why not attract oil companies to your State or encourage your people to invest in their States? Capt Iheanacho is building an oil refinery in Lagos, Cosmos Maduka's Coscharis and Infanyi Ubah's Capital oil have tank farms in Lagos , why can't you force /order them to relocate to Onitsha, Okigwe or Nnewi?instead of shouting oil companies should relocate their HQs to some States or complaining that Lagos has snatched your cake? 1. I'm not Igbo by tribe. 2. I don't believe relocating HQs will make Niger Delta any better because D Niger Deltans used their own hands to push these companies out by bombing & kidnapping D expatriate workers. 3. Lagos state is what it is today because they have always had good leaders, that use their allocation to build D region. Now answer my questions. If Nigeria did not have oil will these oil companies be existing? If they divide Nigeria today will all those HQs not return to Niger Delta? Will the Lagos state be able to enjoy the oil tax from the oil companies? If Niger Deltans start blowing up oil pipeline will Otedola not feel it financially? If Nigeria is divided today will those Nigerians & government official that have oil blocks still have it? I will say this again, directly or indirectly, every region has gained and will continue to gain from the Niger Delta oil. |
