41-year-old Tyrel Martin Marhanka from the United States Of America until his death lived in Taiwan with his family. On Thursday 16th June, a judge handed the father of two who married a Taiwanese woman a life sentence after being found guilty of repeated drug-related offences.

Moments after his conviction by justice Wang Yi-min, the man revealed a pair of scissors he had hidden under his clothes, took them apart and stabbed himself on the two sides of the throat with each blade of the sharp metal object. He died minutes later although efforts were immediately made to rescue him.


A statement released by the court read:
"We deeply regret that Tyrel Martin Marhanka killed himself during the sentencing.

"He was cooperative during the investigation and the trial. His attitude was mild and he did not show any signs that he would commit suicide."

A community based organization of sex workers, Ohotu Diamond Women Initiative (ODWI) has called on the Nigerian Police to stop abuse on sex workers.

In a statement made available to newsmen, the organization laments over the widely misunderstanding status about sex work.

“The illegal status of sex work in most countries, including Nigeria has not eradicated prostitution. Instead, criminalization has increased sex workers vulnerability to human rights abuses and created fertile ground for police exploitation, especially of brothel and street-based sex workers.

“Sex workers deserve the basic respect and protection from violence that each nation owes its citizens. But in many settings, police abuse of sex workers receives scant public attention despite its entrenched global reality. Street and brothel-based female sex workers, one of Lagos and Abuja most vulnerable populations, find themselves targeted for arrest by police, and they experience high levels of violence that go unpunished. Current city and law enforcement policies towards sex workers create a cycle of arrest that does not result in appropriate or long term solutions for the community or sex workers,” the statement reads in part.

On the challenges sex workers face, it said: “The challenge that we face as 50 participants from different L.G.As are almost similar. Many of us face violence and discrimination on a regular basis. Regardless of which State or tribe we are from, many of us have experienced being raped, verbally, emotionally and physically abused by police, clients and community members.

“There is an unfair discrimination from service providers. Sex workers are not protected or defended by the law when they are exploited and abused. We demand that these violations stop immediately and decisive action is taken against perpetrators.”

The statement further revealed how sex workers suffer abuse from the Nigerian Police Officers. “Thirty percent of sex workers interviewed told researchers that they had been threatened with violence by police officers, while 27% actually experienced violence at the hands of police. Reported incidents included officers physically grabbing and kicking, as well as beating them; one incident of rape; one woman was stalked by a police officer; and throwing food at one subject. Sexual harassment included handling of body parts; giving women cigarettes in exchange for sex; and police offering not to arrest sex workers in exchange for sexual services.

“Several times the Police have raided our hotels beating, stealing and having sex with us without protection.”

In a bid to curtail the abuses sex workers suffer from Policemen, the Executive Director of SafeHeaven Development Initiative, Margaret Onah has criticised the method of which Policemen uses to extort money from sex workers and abuse.

According to Onah, the Nigerian Policemen are not mindful of the fundamental human rights that should be accorded to sex workers.

“It is dehumanising when Policemen abuses, sex workers the way they do. We are using this channel to voice out our pains in the course of survival. The government needs to do something about it. It is better if sex workers are charged to court than naming them, harassing them, stealing their money, stealing their properties, and having sex with them unprotected.”

Speaking on what could be done to end the abuse by Policemen, she said: “the Police needs to re-strategise. The fact that sex work is illegal doesn’t mean that they should kill anyone find doing the job.
“Sex workers are citizen of this country first of all, and they need to be respected like every other citizen.”

Speaking on harassment faced with Policemen, Esther Eghosa said: “Time without numbers, the Policemen break our doors to start packing us like goats to the station. If you don’t have money to bail yourself, they will say they want to sleep with you unprotected which is very bad.

Eghosa, who is a sex worker further stress, “As a woman in the brothel, we protect ourselves, we use condoms, but with the Policemen, you don’t have a say.”

Following the heavy rainfall that was experienced around the country on Wednesday, two families each living at a flat on the ground floor of a building in Anambra State, are counting their losses as their homes got flooded with water during the rainfall.

The much-feared Niger Delta Avengers, the militant sect notorious for pipeline bombings in Delta and Bayelsa States, have claimed the bombing of an oil pipeline belonging to the NNPC in Akwa Ibom State today June 16th 2016.

The bombing comes after a group of militants were seen trooping into the Delta State Government House, Asaba on Wednesday. The militants who came in ten buses were met by governor Ifeanyi Okowa and minister of state for Petroleum Ibe Kachikwu who gave them N10m and N5m respectively after a peace talk was held.

Following the violent protest that erupted in the school after students owning school fees were barred from taking 1st semester exams back in April, University Of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has reopened today and rescheduled their exams for June 20 2016.

An official press statement released by UNIPORT today read:
Uniport reopens on Sunday, 19/6/16 and exams commences on 20/6/2016. Please inform others. It’s a decision taken by the governing council, the policy will be suspended and everyone will write exams while further negotiation is done. Visit ecampus.uniport.edu.ng for details. Thanks”
Briefing of achievements thus far by the SUG President (Comrade Ephraim Inno-Anamaeje) to the Faculty Presidents Forum:
1. The no fees, no exams policy has been suspended till second semester when defaulters will be deregistered for the whole session.
2. Peculiar charge will be reviewed by the school management and negotiation will be done by the faculty deans and faculty leaders.
3. The hostels will be opened to students hopefully Wednesday 15th June, 2016.
4. Damages will be paid by students (amount known to him but not disclosed).
5. Installmental payment starts next session and the no fees no exam policy stands (next session).
6. Year 1 students who haven’t paid their fees should defer their admission.
7. No agreement with regards to reduction in fees.

Two men were on Tuesday June 14 2016 beaten and flogged by an angry mob of residents and passersby at Barzon Street, off Ibusa Road in Asaba, Delta State, a blog reader Ebuka has told NGLatest.

The duo were said to have entered a one-storey apartment building in the street, telling the occupants that the landlord had sent them to carry out a repair on the thunder protector unit installed in the house following a heavy rain in Asaba the previous day.

Luck however ran out on the duo when the caretaker of the house met them cutting the lightening rod cables and called the landlord to verify their actions. The suspects immediately fled the scene but were caught meters away by some residents who gave them a hot chase. They were thoroughly beaten and flogged before a team of policemen came and took them away. The cables they stole were said to be worth about 15,000 naira.

Weeks ago, a student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (formerly known as Anambra State University), Uli was allegedly tortured to death by security men. Today, Monday 13th June 2016, another student named Prosper, took his life at the Igbariam campus of the school - close to Anambra capital, Awka.

Prosper reportedly died after emptying a bottle of banned insecticide "Sniper" into his stomach. He had sent a message to his girlfriend that he "will be dead by morning."

A neighbor who resides with Prosper at Swagger Lodge, Achala told NGLatest:

“Around 12:23am, we started hearing noise from him snoring heavily. At first we thought it was normal until it got unbearable. So we had to enter his room and found him lying on the floor. Then we started praying, after which we made arrangements for him to be taken to the hospital. Before then, we had already forced palm oil down his throat. So on getting to the nurse, she confirmed him dead.

Ex Super Falcons player Chichi Igbo was on blast mode after rapper Olamide put up a meme making jest of the Orlando, Florida nightclub shooting where at least 50 people died on Sunday.

After going viral earlier this week for what some social media users termed "unusual dressing" when he rocked sneakers and some traditional clothes, Imo State deputy governor Eze Madumere has slammed his critics.

Jairo Lopes (42) was nearly lynched to death by a mob after he confessed to raping, killing and decimating of 10-year-old Raiana Aparecida Candida in Minais Gerais, Brazil. Jairo weeks ago came to the victim's house saying he was looking for work. He then came back on Wednesday on June 1 to kidnap the girl in exchange for a ransom but said he had a changed his mind after he raped and ripped out her heart in a bid to trade it to ritualists.

Raiana's body was discovered on 5th June after the local community and police launched a search for the primary school kid and manhunt for Jairo. The suspect was finally caught today June 10 hiding in a shelter of trees near the farm Raiana's remains was found. He received a thorough beating by an angry mob who wanted to set him ablaze save for the quick intervention of policemen who took the suspect away.

Police chief Giovanni Idalmo de Faria said:
“We had to move him quickly from the hiding place he was found in because locals wanted to kill him.

“He confessed a past murder to them but claimed he had nothing to do with the little girl’s killing.

“We confiscated blood-stained boots and other potential evidence. Until we’re shown otherwise, this man was the author of this barbaric crime."
