Even though i think your mum should not have reacted and you also should have wisely dropped the issue as it is possible he didnt have the means or that it didnt occur to him that you dont visit someone emptyhanded especially someone whose daughter or son you want to marry until you have become a well accepted person to them. It is just the appropriate thing when visiting someone.

Even though i do not support how the mum reacted and she herself eventually, most men ranting here have mothers who have done worse things to their girlfriends on their first or second visit to their mums. It is then their mothers will be giving nonsense attitudes as if they want to marry their sons.
The whites, we are trying to copy will visit with a bottle of wine, box of chocolate etc. When visiting someone be it friends or family, a gift is advisable. Except you have now become a regular visitor then that wont be necessary every time.
