Jamie Carragher Brands Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United Spell a Disaster Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has slammed Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United, describing it as “a disaster for both the club and the manager.” His comments followed United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford, a result that leaves the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with just 34 points from 33 games under the Portuguese coach. Carragher: United and Amorim Must Move On Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher argued that United’s hierarchy are reluctant to dismiss Amorim because it would expose yet another failed decision at the top. “This has been a disaster for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim. What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. He looked like the next big thing as a manager. But bringing a manager like that in with the system he plays, I don’t think ever suited a club like Manchester United with its traditions.” Carragher insisted that “the quicker they make the decision on the manager, the better for everybody,” emphasizing that United need to accept the reality and bring in a coach more suited to the squad. United’s Current Struggles The loss to Brentford further highlighted United’s poor form, with fans frustrated at the lack of progress since Amorim’s appointment. The club’s record of 34 points from 33 matches is among the worst in its Premier League history. What Next for Manchester United? While Amorim was highly rated after his success at Sporting Lisbon, Carragher argued his tactical system has never aligned with United’s style and traditions. Pressure is mounting on the board to make a decisive call, with speculation intensifying over possible replacements who could guide the club back into Europe. Nigeria to Phase Out Visa-on-Arrival, Introduce Automated Landing Cards The Federal Government has announced plans to abolish the Visa-on-Arrival policy, replacing it with an automated landing and exit card system to enhance security and streamline immigration processes. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja at the closing ceremony of the Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record (API/PNR) training for Immigration officers. New Visa System to Strengthen Security Checks According to the minister, the Visa-on-Arrival system is no longer effective, as it allows visitors to enter Nigeria without prior screening. The new automated system, expected to launch between March 1 and April 1, 2025, will ensure that all visitors undergo real-time security checks before entry. “Nigeria will not be a safe haven for criminals. Visitors must fill digital landing cards before arriving, and the process will be fully integrated with immigration and security systems worldwide,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated. The system will be linked to Interpol databases and criminal record systems, preventing visas from being issued to individuals with security risks. Immigration Officers Undergo Training Meanwhile, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nandap, emphasized the importance of capacity building to effectively implement the new security initiative. She confirmed that over 100 immigration officers have been trained in preparation for the transition. Source: The Bureau Newspaper

6,000 Illegal Nigeriens Found in NIN Database as FG Moves to Clean Up Social Register Abuja, Nigeria – February 7, 2025 The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has identified and removed over 6,000 non-Nigerians, primarily Nigerien nationals, who were illegally registered in its National Identification Number (NIN) database. The discovery comes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed an inter-ministerial committee to ensure a comprehensive and fraud-free National Social Register for the Federal Government’s social investment programs, including student loans and cash transfer schemes. Database Cleanup Underway Sources within the Presidency confirmed that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, briefed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Tuesday, February 4, regarding ongoing efforts to sanitize NIMC’s database. The illegal NINs, which were reportedly obtained through fraudulent registrations, have now been expunged. According to the sources, the cleanup is crucial for ensuring that only legitimate Nigerian citizens benefit from government welfare programs. The humanitarian ministry and the education ministry require accurate data to administer cash transfers and student loans, preventing funds from being misallocated. A senior government official explained: “The President does not want money disbursed to people who cannot be identified. NIMC is ensuring that the database is verified and cleaned up. More Nigerians are also being registered to ensure that only those who genuinely need assistance receive it.”Following the FEC meeting, President Tinubu directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Interior Minister, Tunji-Ojo, to join the existing presidential panel overseeing the humanitarian ministry’s operations. Illegal NIN Registration in Border Areas Investigations revealed that unauthorized NIN registrations have been occurring in border communities, where some corrupt agents allegedly registered foreign nationals for a fee. In 2022, Nigerian security forces arrested two fake NIMC officials who were caught enrolling non-Nigerians at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Niger Republic. Items recovered from them included NIN registration machines, printing and laminating devices, and a generator. The fraudulent practice has raised concerns about security risks and unauthorized access to Nigerian identity credentials. Ensuring Transparency in Government Welfare Programs Speaking on the importance of the cleanup, NIMC Director-General Bisoye Coker-Odusote emphasized that the exercise would enhance transparency in social investment programs. “This process ensures that government payments go to real and verifiable beneficiaries. By linking NIN to payments, we eliminate ghost beneficiaries and ensure funds reach those who truly need them.”She added that the National Social Register, which houses details of all welfare beneficiaries, must now be linked to NIN to verify identities before disbursement. Security Experts Call for Political Will Security analysts argue that while undocumented foreigners holding NINs is not a new issue, the government must demonstrate stronger political will to stop it. Retired Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh stated: “Nigeria’s porous borders have long allowed undocumented foreigners to move freely. Unlike Nigeria, countries like Chad and Cameroon do not allow such laxity. The government’s effort is commendable, but there is still much to be done.”With the latest crackdown on fraudulent NIN registrations, the Tinubu administration aims to strengthen national security and ensure that social investment programs serve only legitimate Nigerian citizens. The Kebbi State Police Command has reported the discovery of over 200 suspected illegal immigrants living in a three-bedroom flat in the Kuwait area of Birnin Kebbi. In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesman, Nafiu Abubakar, revealed that 165 of the suspects were arrested, while the rest managed to escape. The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation on January 31, 2025, at approximately 5 p.m., after security operatives uncovered the large group living in the flat. A team of detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department conducted the raid, apprehending 165 individuals in the process. According to Abubakar, preliminary investigations indicated that the immigrants were from several Francophone West African countries. The breakdown of their nationalities is as follows: 35 from Burkina Faso, 11 from Benin Republic, 5 from Niger Republic, 4 from Mali, and 110 from Ivory Coast. Further investigations revealed that none of the individuals possessed valid travel documents, and they were allegedly involved in the Qnet Ponzi scheme, a fraudulent investment platform known for defrauding unsuspecting victims. Following the preliminary investigation, the police have handed over the suspects to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kebbi State Command, for further inquiries and legal proceedings. This operation comes amid a broader national effort to curb irregular migration. Last week, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that Nigeria had deported at least 828 illegal immigrants in 2024 as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security.
