Zulum dissolves Borno State Executive Council

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the dissolution of the Borno state executive council.

The dissolution, which is with immediate effect, was contained in a statement signed by the permanent secretary, administration and general services, Danjuma Ali on behalf of Secretary to the State Government and made available to journalists by the Governor’s spokespersons from the press unit of the Government House in Maiduguri.

The members were directed to handover affairs to permanent secretaries in their ministries.

The statement explained that the dissolution is to create enabling environment for interested members of the EXCO to legally participate in forthcoming primaries and congresses of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Zulum, according to the statement, expressed deepest appreciation to members of the executive council for unquantifiable contributions while they held offices and wishes them the best of luck in future endeavors.

Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme head of Afghanistan's Taliban-run government, has welcomed domestic and foreign corporations to invest in the country.

In addition, Akhundzada urged Afghans to band together and reconstruct their war-torn country.

He made the statements in his message on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, which celebrates the conclusion of Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.
"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan puts significant priority to the country's restoration," he said in a message posted by the state-run news agency Bakhtar on Friday. "It has assigned a competent economic committee to use all existing capacities toward the country's development."

Mr Akhundzada also identified Afghanistan as all Afghans' shared home and asked those who had fled to return.

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seeks healthy relations with neighboring and international countries," he stressed. "We allow no one from Afghanistan to pose a threat to other nations, and we also want other countries to engage with us on the basis of mutual respect."

The country's supreme leader stated that poppy growing and drug production will be prohibited in his country.

He explained that his administration would solve the challenges faced by farmers and residents in general by providing new sources of income.

Mr Akhundzada also urged foreign health organizations and humanitarian organizations to assist Afghans in the health-care sector, which is suffering from a lack of drugs, medical personnel, and medical equipment.

He also emphasized the importance of education in rescuing "our compatriots" and paving the route for the country's progress and prosperity.

In the run-up to the 2015 presidential election, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo described his nomination as running mate to then-candidate Muhammadu Buhari as "surprising."

When he learnt of his candidacy, he said he was working on a Supreme Court matter involving a defection of a federal politician.

On Wednesday, when he entertained members of the State House Press Corps to a breaking of fast (Iftar) at his Aguda Residence at the President Villa in Abuja, Mr Osinbajo related the story of his ascension.

"On December 18, 2014, I was working on the case in Peniel Apartments in Abuja when I received a call from Rauf Aregbesola saying they were coming to Lagos to pick me up at about 1 a.m".

"I stated I was in Abuja," she said. "Good because you've been nominated as the vice-presidential candidate," Mr Osinbajo remarked. "Is that how you nominate people?" he said.

After his case that day, the vice president returned to his lodging, he said. He stated he felt "that this is probably the final time I would be wearing it" after removing his wig.

He claimed that Mr Aregbesola, the current interior minister, and former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, took him to Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate, later in the day.

Mr. Osinbajo told the journalists that he was sharing his tale to show them how quickly one's life can change.

He stated that he has always believed in and worked for a better Nigeria throughout his life, and that his decision to run for president in 2023 will allow him to make a difference. He claims that just a few people have his level of training and experience.

He stated he met with governors, delegates, and party leaders both before and after announcing his candidacy for president. He did say that the Iftar with the journalists is the first with a group that will not vote in the party primaries.

When Mr. Osinbajo said, "I am probably meeting you for your money donation," his audience laughed.

"I'm not sure why you think it's a joke," he continued, eliciting additional laughs from the member of the press corps.

Following that, the vice president sought the backing of the journalists.

Ismaila Chafe, interim leader of the State House Press Corps, said several members of the corps have been reporting from the Presidential Villa for more than a decade.

"Presidents and vice presidents have come and gone." "However, we can state with great humility that you have made a difference in the way you have interacted with the State House Press Corps," Mr Chaffe remarked.

"We recall you gathering us here in this same hall not long after you took office for a very interesting interaction. That interaction has left an indelible impression on us. And you've kept a close relationship with the corps since then."

Mr. Chaffe stated that the press corps 'is highly' supportive of Vice President Biden's goals, particularly his'supporting positions to guarantee that this government leaves a lasting legacy.'

"As a corps, we will continue to fulfill our duty as objectively as possible," he stated.

After spending 32 whooping years serving jail sentence, prosecutors discovered Thomas Raynard James never committed the crime, a Florida court annulled his conviction and sentence on Wednesday, allowing him to walk free.

Assistant State Attorney Christine Zahralban told the court on Wednesday, "We have found that Thomas Raynard James is genuinely innocent." Judge Miguel M de la O subsequently vacated James' life sentence in front of his mother and family.

After the exoneration, James told reporters, "This has been a long time coming." He stated that he intends to begin looking for work and share his first supper with his family. "Now, let me go enjoy life," James stated as he prepared to leave the courthouse.

According to court documents, James, now 55, was arrested in 1990 and convicted of the first-degree murder of Francis McKinnon in 1991. One eyewitness' positive identification of James was crucial to the case. He received a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in jail, as well as extra sentences for armed robbery, aggravated assault with a firearm, and armed burglary of an occupied residence with a firearm.

"Mr. James, I don't want to see you in jail if you're innocent," Charles McKinnon, one of the victim's sons, said in court on Wednesday. He noted, however, that the family was not convinced and could not back the state's position.

According to State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, James' case was picked up by the State Attorney Office Justice Project (SAO Justice Project) last year after being denied twice by the Innocence Project of Florida owing to a lack of DNA evidence.

According to a motion to dismiss James' convictions and sentencing submitted by Rundle, James had filed more than ten post-conviction motions and appeals, all of which were denied.

The SAO Justice Project evaluated almost 20,000 pages of information and performed their own oath interviews with witnesses, some of whom were prison inmates, in June 2021. They looked into DNA, guns, and evidence from the crime scene and discovered no tangible evidence linking anyone to the crime.

The only eyewitness who positively identified James was the victim's stepdaughter, Dorothy Walton. She is mentioned in a Miami Herald piece dated 1991, according to the motion, adding, "I'll never forget his expression. I'll never forget the look in his eyes."
Walton, now 79, informed investigators with the Innocence Project of Florida in 2019 that she feared she had made a mistake when she identified James.

Rundle described the probe as a "unfortunate example of mistaken identity." "Eyewitness testimony, especially in those days, might be quite fragile."
In a sworn declaration to the SAO Justice Project in January 2022, James stated that he had never shot anyone and had never visited the apartment complex where the incident took place.

James also agreed to a polygraph test, in which he answered yes to questions about whether he was physically present in the flat when McKinnon was shot, whether he shot McKinnon, and whether he was engaged in the robbery/murder in any manner.

Rundle described Wednesday as "a day of joy for the James family and a day of anguish for the McKinnon family." "They still lost a loved one, their father, and they thought the person who killed him had been brought to justice, and that the case was closed."

After the court session, Charles McKinnon told reporters that he wants to see that his father receives justice.
"As family members, we haven't gotten enough information," he said. "I can't say I completely disagree, but I also don't believe I know enough to say I support it."

Rundle expressed her admiration for her Justice Project team's dedication to James' case.
She explained, "We have a sword and a shield." "We have a sword to pursue those who frighten, harm, rape, or murder others. But we have a shield, and the shield's purpose is to protect the victims, the community, and the innocent. That is our task for today. It's a fantastic sensation."

Following his appearance in All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign posters that confirms his partisan affiliation and entanglement with the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands the immediate resignation and investigation of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The PDP claims that the inclusion of the CBN Governor, the nation's banker, in APC campaign material is the pinnacle of impunity for President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, which equates to putting its fingers in Nigerians' eyes and daring them to do their worst.

Mr. Emefiele's actions are in violation of Section 9 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, which states that "the governor and deputy governors shall devote the entirety of their time to the service of the bank and shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation, whether remunerated or not, while holding office..."


Mr. Emefiele has intentionally and deliberately violated the clause of the CBN Act stated above by engaging in partisan politics to the level of appearing in APC campaign posters.

Mr. Emefiele has also desecrated the sanctity of his office as CBN Governor, jeopardized the central bank's integrity, and deprived it of the trust entrusted to it by Nigerians and the international community, and as a result, he is no longer eligible to hold or operate in that position.

This further demonstrates that the CBN, as the guardian of our national economy, has become an appendage and cash cow of the APC in their irresponsible pillaging of our national resources, the result of which is now seen in the near-collapse status of our economy under Mr. Emefiele's leadership.

The CBN Governor should resign immediately and be investigated by anti-corruption agencies over allegations of financial mismanagement, including allegedly opening our national vaults to the APC cabal and operating a special fraudulent, corrupt, and discriminatory foreign exchange regime for APC leaders to fleece our country.

Furthermore, this validates allegations in the public domain that the CBN had surreptitiously issued billions of naira to pay the APC National Convention through different petroleum industry underhand deals.

President Buhari and the APC have made it apparent that they are not dedicated to ensuring a level playing field for free and fair general elections in 2023. Mr. Emefiele, as the federation's banker, has excessive access to public cash that may be used to bankroll the APC's campaigns.

Furthermore, because the CBN Governor has authority over all other Nigerians' accounts, he may utilize his position to suffocate other competitors' money.

Campaign posters with the portraits of the CBN Governor and the President side by side can only be tolerated under the APC's impunity and disrespect for norms and the sanctity of institutions. That implies approval of wrongdoing, and we demand that President Buhari come clean about the Central Bank of Nigeria's massive malfeasance.

President Buhari's legacy will be remembered for undermining every aspect of our national life, from security to the election process, national unity, and now the integrity of the Central Bank. Our Party warns that the ramifications are best imagined.

Mr. Emefiele should resign immediately now that he has openly identified with the APC, or face an ill-fated career in the fading APC.

Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, NEPZA Managing Director dropped the hint on Friday during a courtesy visit on the Executive Chairman of the Federal Revenue Inland Services (FIRS), Mr Mohammed Nami in Abuja.

Adesugba, also Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, said that NEPZA aimed at opening the country’s free trade zones’ corridor for genuine global competitiveness.

According to him, the African Continental Free Trade Zones Area (AfCFTA) has given leverage to all countries in the continent to diverse their business catchments.

``As we speak, free trade zones are springing up everywhere in Africa. Nigeria must be concerned about competitions from Egypt; South Africa; Kenya; Benin Republic; Ghana; and Togo where huge investments have been committed to free trade zones development.

``For us, we are doing well with about 500 enterprises operating in 42 zones across the country, but we must expand the investment corridor to magnet operators of the blockchain technology which remains the future of global economy.

``The time to join the train is now, else we shall be counting our losses in a few years time. We are delighted that the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently approved and deployed the e-naira,’’ the NEPZA boss said.

Experts had opined that the country’s decision to approve the e-naira was akin to the fact that the blockchain business was becoming a legitimate disrupt in a myriad of industries.
The technology has become so promising that international tech giants are investing millions of dollars in its research.

He further held that more than 90 per cent of European and US banks were researching blockchain options. According to Adesugba, nothing should stop the country from exploiting the multi trillion dollar sector.
He stated that multinational organizations like JP Morgan, MTN, KFC, Tesla and many others have entered the crypto currency and metaverse digital blockchain sector with MTN said to have purchased 114 metaverse properties recently.

He explained further that the Authority was aware on how the technology could revolutionalise government; finance; insurance; and personal identity security, adding that trillions of naira could accrue to the federal government as revenue from this ecosystem.

``We hope to soon attract some of the top global blockchain companies and exchanges like Binance, Cardano, Crypto.com,Kukoin, Coinbase, and such high flying successful young algorithm based tomb fork protocols like Darkcrypto; on why they should operate in the country’s zones,’’ Adesugba said.

The NEPZA chief executive also said that the decision to fully promote the blockchain technology hinged on its fast rate of revenue turnovers and the unlimited job space the technology had for the teeming youth.

He explained that the country’s tax net would be exponentially enlarged if the investment came alive, as according to him, Nigeria is currently rated as the 6th largest player in the world in the crypto and blockchain trade especially amongst the youths.

" I, therefore, see no reason why we should not open up the space and attract the much needed capital into the country, while government benefits from taxes , or management fees amounting to billions of Naira as is done in countries like Canada and South Africa.

Adesugba, also said that the Authority was ready to deepen its collaborative efforts with relevant government agencies in order to fast track the country’s industrialization, noting that the visit to the FIRS was to prepare grounds for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending indiscriminate tax regime that had stunted the full development of the free trade zone scheme.

He said that the scheme was a global business policy that exempt operators of zones from all forms of taxes and duties, adding, however, that when goods and services from the zones were taken to the customs area, they then will be required to pay the required duty which is not necessary when exported elsewhere.

``You can see that the country is not losing any revenue as most of the goods and services from the zones are now imported to the customs areas. FIRS and the Custom Services must wait until items from the zones are brought to the customs area before they can be taxed,’’ he said.

Adesugba also explained that it was imperative that the key agencies partnering with the Authority to drive the development of the scheme understand the dynamics of the scheme.

Nami, on his part, explained that the stage was set to enter into an MoU with NEPZA, adding that such agreement would certainly obliterate all pending negative notions between these two important agencies of government.

Rochas Okorocha (APC – Imo), a presidential contender, claimed on Sunday that he would persuade ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu to stand aside for him as the APC's presidential candidate.

Mr Okorocha, a senator and former governor of Imo, made the remarks while answering questions from media at the APC National Convention in Abuja.

"It's quite likely that Uncle Tinubu and I will be together" (the major candidates from Southern Nigeria).

The Nigerian Correctional Service's Akwa Ibom State Command has dismissed reports in the media that its officers and men were plotting a protest over inadequate worker welfare.

The strike information is "false and should be dismissed as it is the creation of certain wicked individuals seeking to generate undue alarm in the population," according to a press statement signed by the Command public relations, Mr Ogbajie Ogbajie (DSC).

Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command, are on duty in all formations in the state, according to the statement, and they are doing their responsibilities with dedication and patriotism.

'The Akwa Ibom State Command is serene and tranquil, with convicts going about their daily routines without being disturbed.'

I am aware that employee benefits such as housing and other incentives are being bundled to enhance employee morale. As a result, it's unlikely that officers will consider going on strike at this moment of increased focus to their care and support.

'While conceding that employee welfare in every organization is a work in progress, there is clearly space for improvement in the Service's employee welfare, there are outlets for transmitting urgent personnel requirements from field officers to national management.

'This is a forward-thinking method that is available to everybody, and it has always been used to reinforce and influence management policies in the workers' best interests.'

The announcement stated, "The Command wishes to underline its commitment not just to the safe custody of detainees but also to the wellbeing of employees."
