Good evening
Health / Laparoscopy Surgery (keyhole Surgery) by MIsurgical(f): 6:03pm On Oct 04, 2019
#Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin.

This procedure is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Large incisions can be avoided during laparoscopy because the surgeon uses an instrument called a laparoscope.

This is a small tube that has a light source and a camera, which relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor.

The advantages of this technique over traditional open surgery include:

a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery timeless pain and bleeding after the operationreduced scarring

When laparoscopy is used

Laparoscopy can be used to help diagnose a wide range of conditions that develop inside the abdomen or pelvis. It can also be used to carry out surgical procedures, such as removing a damaged or diseased organ, or removing a tissue sample for further testing (biopsy).

Laparoscopy is most commonly used in:

#gynaecology – the study and treatment of conditions affecting the female reproductive systemgastroenterology – the study and treatment of conditions affecting the digestive systemurology – the study and treatment of conditions affecting the urinary system.

Uterine fibroids are growths in your uterus. Because they’re typically not cancerous, you can decide whether or not you want to have them removed.

You may not need surgery if your fibroids don’t bother you. However, you might consider surgery if your fibroids cause:

heavy menstrual bleeding
bleeding between periods
pain or pressure in your lower belly
frequent urination
trouble emptying your bladder
Surgery might also be an option if you want to get pregnant in the future. Sometimes fibroids can increase your risk of having a miscarriage or complications during your pregnancy.

If you decide to have fibroid surgery, you have three options:

endometrial ablation
myomectomy
hysterectomy

Surgery can relieve your fibroid symptoms, but it does come with risks. Your doctor will talk you through your options. Together, you can decide whether to have a procedure, and if so, which one to have.

Types of fibroid surgery
There are three types of fibroid procedures. Which one you have depends on:

the size of your fibroids
the number of fibroids you have
where in your uterus they’re located
whether you want to have children

Bleeding during pregnancy is common, especially during the first trimester, and usually it's no cause for alarm. But because bleeding can sometimes be a sign of something serious, it's important to know the possible causes, and get checked out by your doctor to make sure you and your baby are healthy.

Health / What Pelvic Pain Is. by MIsurgical(f): 12:39pm On Sep 23, 2019
Although pelvic pain often refers to pain in the region of women's internal reproductive organs, pelvic pain can be present in men, too, and can stem from multiple causes. Pelvic pain may be a symptom of infection or may arise from pain in the pelvic bone or in non-reproductive internal organs, such as the bladder or colon. In women, however, pelvic pain can very well be an indication that there may be a problem with one of the reproductive organs in the pelvic area (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, or vagina).

Gynecologists specialize in women's health. Their primary responsibilities include examining patients, diagnosing medical problems and treating various illnesses and diseases. Some Gynecologists also perform minor surgeries and laser procedures.

Obstetricians specialize in treating women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. These physicians monitor the condition of both mothers and unborn babies. When it comes time to deliver, obstetricians manage the labor process and care for the mother after the baby is born.

Although some physicians specialize in either gynecology or obstetrics, many work as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist. A small percentage specialize in a particular area, such as adolescent gynecology, operative gynecology, fetal medicine or infertility.

Obstetricians and Gynecologists usually work in hospitals, clinics, birthing facilities, surgical centers and other medical facilities. Many OBGYNs also set up their own private practice. Regardless of setting, most Obstetricians and Gynecologists work long and irregular hours tending to emergencies and births can occur at all hours of the day and night.

Uterine fibroids also known as leiomyomas are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus/womb. They may cause your periods to be heavy and to be painful. They can also cause pain during sex as well as constant lower back pain. They can interfere in your ability to have a child depending on where they are located. They can be located in many places and depending on where

they are located determines what options your doctor may offer to treat them

Types

Uterine fibroids are often described based upon their location within the uterus.

Subserosal fibroids are located beneath the serosa (the lining membrane on the outside of the uterus), it extends beyond the wall of the womb and grow within the outside surface of the uterus tissue layer or may be attached to the outside surface by a pedicle.
Submucosal (submucous) fibroids are located inside the uterine cavity found in the muscle beneath the inner lining of the uterus wall.
Intramural fibroids are the most common type, located within the muscular wall of the uterus/womb.
Pedunculated fibroids grow on a stalk of tissue known as a pedicle (like a mushroom), it extends inside or outside of the uterus cavity.
Symptoms

Once a fibroid develops, it can continue to grow until menopause. After menopause the estrogen levels fall, which makes the fibroid shrink in size gradually. Most fibroids produce no symptoms. Fibroids are often found during a regular pelvic examination.

When women do experience symptoms, the most common are the following:

painful periods, increase in menstrual bleeding known as menorrhagia, sometimes with blood clots
anaemia as a result of increase in menstrual bleeding
pressure on the rectum, resulting in constipation
pelvic pressure, lower abdominal pain
lower backache or leg pain
pain during intercourse, known as dyspareunia
pressure on the bladder, which may cause frequent urination
pregnancy/labour problems
constipation
discomfort in the lower abdomen (feeling full) especially in the case of large fibroids
infertility issues
multiple miscarriages
If fibroids are large, there may also be weight gain and swelling in the lower abdomen.

Fibroids are treated in many ways. They can be treated by medications and by surgery. The removal of fibroids (myomectomy) can be done by laparoscopic surgery where we remove the fibroids through small incisions on the abdomen. Fibroids can also be removed hysteroscopically, where the submucosal fibroids are removed through the vagina without making any incisions on the abdomen. Call our office for more information on this topic and what surgical or medical options would be ideal for you.

The ovaries

Ovaries are two small, bean-shaped organs located in the lower abdomen on both sides of the womb or uterus and very essential to the female reproductive system. The major functions of ovaries are;

to release one or more eggs approximately every 28 days of the female menstrual cycle
to release the vital female sex hormones which are oestrogen and progesterone
A cyst is a sac filled with fluid, formed in the body.

An Ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac which develops in one or both ovaries. Ovarian cysts are very common in women, and all women would develop at least one cyst during their lifetime. Ovarian cysts are mostly painless and in most cases, disappear without treatment within a few months. However, ovarian cyst can become large and twist the ovary hence diminishing blood supply to the ovaries. If this occurs, it is called an ovarian torsion and it is considered a medical emergency. The symptoms of a torsion are:

Severe or sharp pelvic pain usually on one side
Lower abdominal pain
Painful sexual intercourse
difficulty emptying your bowels
rapid breathing
dizziness and feeling faint
Ovarian cysts usually do not cause any symptoms, but as the cysts get bigger you may experience the following:

Sudden, severe abdominal or pelvic pain
fever with pain
abdominal bloating or swelling
painful bowel movements
pelvic pain before or during the menstrual cycle
painful sexual intercourse
breast tenderness
nausea and vomiting
lower back pain or thighs
If any of these signs and symptoms occurs, please call our office and we would be happy to speak to you about these issues

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries and may affect one or both ovaries. The female reproductive system contains two ovaries which produce eggs (ova) and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. This Type of cancer is usually undetected at the early stage, which is why it is very important that you see a gynecologist if you experience any of the symptoms below. Surgery and chemotherapy are generally used to treat ovarian cancer.
