Nigeria allow to carry guns will be a serious disaster due to our "strong security and very reliable security system".... Nigeria a country without direction |
United States President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House correspondents’ dinner in Washington, DC, after shots were fired outside the event. Trump was rushed out of the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday evening after gunshots were heard outside the ballroom where the president and the first lady had been seated before the start of the annual media gala. Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he and his Cabinet were safe, and that he would give a news conference from the White House shortly. “The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition,” Trump said. “We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.” Trump also hailed the actions of the US Secret Service and local law enforcement. “They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump said, adding that he had recommend that the event continue as planned but would defer to law enforcement. The US Secret Service said the shooting had occurred at a “screening area” and that one individual was in custody. “The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,” the agency said. Footage from the scene showed Trump and attendees taking cover behind their table after shots rang out, as people yelled “Get down!” and “Stay down!” Trump was then rushed away from the scene by Secret Service agents, after which heavily armed agents surrounded the table. Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan said he heard what he believed to be five gunshots outside the ballroom. “We could smell the powder. We immediately dove to the ground. It was directly behind me,” Sheridan said. “I couldn’t tell how many feet away, but it was definitely behind the doors to the entrance to the ballroom.” Sheridan said there was a very heavy police presence around the hotel. “They are trying to clear the area at the moment,” he said. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed her relief that Trump and the First Lady were unharmed. “We send our respect,” she said in a post on X. “Violence should never be the way.” Trump has been targeted in multiple assassination attempts, including a near-miss shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania in 2024. Thomas Crooks fired eight shots at Trump during a campaign event, killing one bystander and lightly wounding the then-candidate’s right ear.

United States President Donald Trump is insistent that “productive” negotiations have taken place with Iran to end the war he launched with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu almost a month ago. The major problem with that narrative is that Iran’s top officials have repeatedly denied it. Amid the fog of war and the propaganda being pushed by all sides, it is hard to know who to believe. But an analysis of what each side has to gain from any negotiations – and a potential end to the conflict – could bring more clarity. ing week. The five-day deadline he gave for a positive response from Iran also happens to coincide with the end of the trading week. Many have cynically noted that timing, especially as it comes after a two-week period in which oil prices have fluctuated in line with events in the Middle East, leading to a high of about $120 a barrel last week. Trump’s talk of negotiations may also give time for more US troops to arrive in the Middle East, if Washington decides to conduct some form of ground invasion of Iranian territory. Among those questioning Trump’s motives was the man believed by some to be the senior Iranian official Trump was referencing: the Iranian parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. “No negotiations have been held with the US, and fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” Ghalibaf wrote on social media. The impact on stock markets and oil prices is not just relevant to the US and Trump, but also to Iran. However, for Tehran, the benefit comes in the damage the war is doing to the US and global economies. The Iranian state wants the US to feel economic pain from the war, as a means of deterrence for any future Israeli or US attack on Iran. Therefore, as much as it is in the US interest to play up talk of negotiations in order to calm the markets, it is also in Iran’s interest to downplay any talk to do the exact opposite, and not give the Trump administration any breathing space. US benefits? Consequently, both sides have their own narratives on negotiations, and public comments will do little to inform us as to whether those negotiations are really taking place, or in what form they may be. tual end to the war at the current stage. Trump appears to have underestimated the consequences of the conflict that he launched with Netanyahu on February 28, and the ability of the Iranian state to withstand the attacks against it without collapsing. “They weren’t supposed to go after all these other countries in the Middle East … Nobody expected that,” he said last week, adding that even “the greatest experts” didn’t believe that. Leaving aside that experts – including US intelligence officials – had repeatedly made those warnings, reality has now made Trump aware of the consequences he had previously ignored. While some allies and supporters may continue to push him to plough on with the conflict, Trump has previously shown himself amenable to cutting deals to extricate himself from difficult situations, and it is not far-fetched to see the benefits of doing so in this instance. The US president has already ordered his government to issue temporary sanctions waivers on some Iranian oil, in an effort to calm oil prices. This is the first time Iran has lifted sanctions on any Iranian oil since 2019, and it will not be lost on Iran that the waivers have come as a result of their policy to expand the conflict to the wider Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquified natural gas transits. The war was already unpopular in the US – and now even more so, as consumers see the impact on petrol prices and potentially other areas of the economy, all in the run-up to congressional elections later this year, in which Trump’s Republicans are likely to do poorly. Trump, therefore, has the options of extending this war – and suffering the economic and political cost, or ending it – and facing the criticism that he was unable to finish what he termed as a “short-term excursion”. The Iranian perspective But whatever Trump wants to do, the decision is not totally in his hands. Iran, attacked for the second time in less than a year, now appears to have less of an incentive to end the war without the establishment of an effective deterrent to another in the future. Gone are the days of the telegraphed attacks on US assets and the slow climb up the escalation ladder. From the outset of the current war, it was clear that Iran had changed its tactics and was not as interested in restraint. It is now arguably in the Iranian state’s benefit to drag out the conflict and inflict more suffering on the region, if it wants to ensure its survival. There may also be a belief that interceptor stocks in Israel are running low, allowing Iran to strike targets more effectively. The thinking – particularly among the hardliners who now appear to be in the ascendancy in Iran – will be that now is not the time to stop, and allow those interceptor stocks to replenish. And yet, Iran is suffering. More than 1,500 people have been killed across the country, according to the government. Infrastructure has been heavily damaged, and the power grid could be next. Relations with Gulf neighbours have nosedived, and, after repeated Iranian attacks, are unlikely to return to their previous levels after the conflict. More moderate voices in Iran will look at that and think that things could easily get worse. They can argue that some form of deterrence has been achieved, and that the time is now ripe to talk. And if they can get some concessions – such as a promise of no future attacks, or greater authority in the Strait of Hormuz – they may decide that the time is right to make a deal.

Following a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump said the US will waive oil-related sanctions on “some countries” to ease the shortage sparked by the US-Israeli war on Iran. Trump told reporters in Florida on Monday: “So we have sanctions on some countries. We’re going to take those sanctions off until the strait [of Hormuz] is up.” He declined to provide further details. The move could mean a further easing of sanctions on Russian oil, Reuters reported, citing multiple sources, which in turn could complicate efforts to punish Moscow for its war in Ukraine. Other options to calm the market include a possible release of oil from strategic reserves or restricting US exports, sources said. Last week the US issued a temporary waiver allowing India to purchase certain Russian oil cargoes to help it cope with the loss of Middle Eastern supply. With the strait of Hormuz blocked to nearly all oil tankers, the price of benchmark crude oil contracts rocketed past $100 a barrel on Monday – their highest levels since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 – before pulling back. A previously announced White House plan to provide naval escorts and backstop insurance for tankers travelling through the strait has so far has failed to significantly boost shipping traffic through the vital waterway. The US president said the conversation with his Russian counterpart was upbeat, adding: “We were talking about Ukraine, which is just a never-ending fight. But I think it was a positive call on that subject.” Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov described the conversation as “frank and businesslike” and said it lasted about one hour. Putin signalled again that Russia was ready to supply oil and gas to Europe, saying the Iran war had caused a global energy crisis and cautioned that oil production dependent on transport through the strait of Hormuz could soon come to a complete halt. Russia is the world’s second-largest oil exporter and holds the world’s biggest reserves of natural gas. Putin also said Russian companies should take advantage of the situation in the Middle East, though he noted that the spike in prices was probably temporary in character.

The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, has denied claims that Nigerians are being recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the ambassador said there is no official programme by the Russian government to recruit Nigerians for the war. He described the reports as misleading. He said if any individuals are trying to recruit Nigerians to fight in Ukraine, they are acting illegally and are not connected to the Russian government. He added that any reliable information about such activities would be sent to Russian law enforcement authorities for investigation. The ambassador explained that military cooperation between Russia and Nigeria is guided by official agreements. These agreements mainly cover military training and possible supply of equipment. Podyelyshev described Nigeria as one of Russia’s most important partners in Africa. He said the relationship between the two countries influences Russia’s activities in West Africa. He spoke during a diplomatic event titled “Russia in a Multipolar World Order: African Perspective,” held to mark Russia’s Diplomatic Service Day. The ambassador also said Russia supports a global system based on international law, equal rights for all countries, and non-interference in internal affairs. He called for reforms in global institutions, including giving African countries more representation on the United Nations Security Council. He added that cooperation between Russia and Nigeria is growing in areas such as defence, education, energy, healthcare, and security. He also mentioned plans to establish a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in Nigeria and to increase scholarships for Nigerian students to study in Russia.

Donald Trump has claimed Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky is holding up a potential peace deal, not Russian leader Vladimir Putin, in a fresh U-turn. Speaking to Reuters in the Oval Office yesterday, Trump said Putin is ready to wrap up his nearly four-year-old invasion of Ukraine. Zelensky, he said, was more reticent. His claim is in sharp contrast with European allies who have proven Putin as the key figure ramping up military aggression and rejecting peace proposals from Trump’s envoys. "I think he's ready to make a deal," Trump said of the Russian president. "I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal." Asked why US-led negotiations had not yet resolved Europe's largest land conflict since the Second World War, Trump responded: "Zelensky”. European governments are pushing the EU to create a dedicated negotiator role for talks with Russia over Ukraine, amid fears that the US could strike a deal with Moscow that sidelines Europe, Politico has reported. Backed by France and Italy, the proposal would mark a significant shift in EU diplomacy, providing the bloc with its own channel to defend key red lines, such as Ukraine’s future security and Nato ambitions, as US president Donald Trump pursues bilateral talks with Vladimir Putin, the outlet said. Citing three unidentified diplomats, Politico said supporters argue that EU needs a seat at the table to safeguard its security interests. |

Just before the meeting between Witkoff and Putin, which hasn’t started yet, the Russian president delivered a quite threatening speech commenting on European and Ukrainian affairs. While speaking at a domestic summit, he promised to cut Ukraine off from the sea and said that Russia was ready for war with Europe. He said that Moscow did not intend to fight European countries, but if Europe were to start a war, Russia was ready to fight. He also said Europe has excluded itself from peace negotiations and said that its proposals regarding the peace plan for Ukraine were unacceptable to Russia. Putin also threatened to increase attacks on Ukrainian ports and ships in response to attacks on tankers in the Black Sea. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Kyiv’s European allies Tuesday of sabotaging U.S.-led efforts to end the nearly 4-year-old war in Ukraine, shortly before he met with a delegation sent by President Donald Trump. They don’t have a peace agenda, they’re on the side of the war,” Putin said of the Europeans prior to talks in the Kremlin with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Putin’s accusations appeared to be his latest attempt to sow dissension between Trump and European countries and set the stage for exempting Moscow from blame for any lack of progress. He accused Europe of amending peace proposals with “demands that are absolutely unacceptable to Russia,” thus “blocking the entire peace process” and blaming Moscow for it. “That’s their goal,” Putin said. He reiterated his long-held position that Russia has no plans to attack Europe — a concern regularly voiced by some European countries. “But if Europe suddenly wants to wage a war with us and starts it, we are ready right away. There can be no doubt about that,” Putin said. Russia started the war in 2022 with its full-scale invasion of a sovereign European country, and European governments have since spent billions of dollars to support Ukraine financially and militarily, to wean themselves from energy dependence on Russia, and to strengthen their own militaries to deter Moscow from seizing more territory by force. They worry that if Russia gets what it wants in Ukraine, it will have free rein to threaten or disrupt other European countries, which already have faced incursions from Russian drones and fighter jets, and an alleged widespread Russian sabotage campaign. Trump’s peace plan relies on Europe to provide the bulk of the financing and security guarantees for a postwar Ukraine, even though no Europeans appear to have been consulted on the original plan. That’s why European governments have pushed to ensure that peace efforts address their concerns, too. Speaking with Putin via a translator before the talks, Witkoff said he and Kushner had taken “a beautiful walk” around Moscow and described it as a “magnificent city.” Coinciding with Witkoff’s trip, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went to Ireland, continuing his visits to European countries that have helped sustain his country’s fight against Russia’s invasion
