SportsBrief History Of The Late Legendary Peter Rufai by Mj4199(op): 8:56am On Jul 06, 2025
Peter Rufai was more than a goalkeeper. He was a myth, an inspirational picture on the wall for misty-eyed children. He was a tale by moonlight, and the retelling of his brilliance was almost a legendary fable. He was “Dodo Mayana”, a sight so pleasurable that one craves to see it again tomorrow and the next day.

He died on Thursday at 61, and to immortalise him, superlatives have poured unstintingly onto the pages of Nigerian newspapers.
The kids who watched Peter Rufai at his awe-inspiring best never wanted to be a goalkeeper; they wanted to be Peter Rufai. He brought beauty, eccentricity and colour to what was often considered the least interesting football position.

He would leap like a deranged cat to claw out shots travelling at an impossible pace. He danced, juggled and laughed in the face of danger while everyone was soiling themselves. With his signature punk hairstyle and freckled face, Rufai was fashion, flair, and fiery passion in one.

Rufai was the safe hands behind Nigeria’s golden football generation. He was the spine. He was the foundation upon which all the successes were built. His presence calmed Stephen Keshi into being the “Big Boss”. Rashidi Yekini’s goals would be mere consolations without his brilliant saves. Rufai’s acrobatics to deny Kenneth Malitoli and Kalusha Bwalya of Zambia in the 1994 AFCON final won Nigeria the trophy as much as Emmanuel Amuneke’s brace.

In turn, Nigerians were deeply enamoured of Rufai: fans once took to the streets to protest his exclusion from the national team squad. He was respected for his service: he captained Nigeria in the country’s first-ever World Cup appearance. Rufai was also a trailblazer: he was said to be the first Eagles goalkeeper to play professionally abroad. Yet, all this greatness was a product of a decision made in haste, under duress and fear.

RENAMED DURING THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR TO CONCEAL HIS YORUBA HERITAGE:
Peter Rufai was born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos. His father was the king of a community in the Idimu area of the state, while his mother hailed from Port Harcourt.

After a few years in Lagos, Rufai relocated to Kaduna in the northern part of Nigeria with his mother. It was at Community Primary School in Sabon-Gari, Kaduna, that Rufai discovered he loved football more than food.

“I used to join other kids to play football during break, and each time I would even forget that my mother gave me money for food. Different children will buy food and all, but my money will just be there in my pocket,” he said in an interview with The Popular Side.

“Not until my mother wanted to wash my uniform and she would see the money and asked why I didn’t buy food. I would tell her I forgot because I was playing football.”

Then the Nigerian civil war broke out in 1967, and Rufai’s mother was among the millions who thought it would be safer to return to their places of origin. They moved to Port Harcourt.

The war was between the Nigerian army and the Biafran separatist forces. The Nigerian military was predominantly composed of soldiers from northern or south-western Nigeria. The major ethnic group in Nigeria’s south-west is Yoruba, which is also the ethnicity of Rufai’s father.

Port Harcourt, where the mother relocated with the young Rufai, was under the control of Biafran soldiers. To protect her child from retaliatory attacks, Rufai’s mother dropped her son’s Yoruba name and gave him his famous first name, “Peter”.

In his new city, Rufai started at Municipal Primary School, where another hasty decision led him to become a goalkeeper.

The scoreline was 4-4 during an inter-school match, and Rufai’s teammates were frustrated at the team’s goalkeeper for conceding cheap goals. Rufai was a midfielder in the team.

The goalkeeper got angry and stormed out of the goalpost.

“He left the post, pulled off his shirt and threw it away. I caught the shirt, and I stepped into the goalpost,” Rufai recounted.
“I became the goalkeeper, and I was stopping the shots as the shots were coming. I was stopping with my head, legs and my whole body. So, we eventually won the match 5-4.

“At the next school match, everyone said I must be the goalkeeper. From there, I started playing as a goalkeeper.”
He became a household name in the community, and at just 11, he was selected for Rivers State’s U13 team to participate in a competition in Lagos.

At the competition, Rufai’s team was walloped in the semi-final by Bendel state. Rufai conceded nine goals.

Demoralised by the heavy defeat, a young Rufai nearly quit until he was spotted by a coach identified as “Tiger”.

The coach taught him the basics of positioning, anticipation, legwork, and other technical aspects that refined his raw talent.

Shortly after, Rufai moved to the Government Vocational School in Port Harcourt, where he trained to become an electrician. At his new school’s playing ground, he was scouted by Sharks FC, formerly Rivers’ flagship football club, and was brought into their youth ranks.

At Sharks, he trained with Monday Sinclair, the legendary Nigerian football coach.

BEGAN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL AT 17:
In the late 60s and early 70s, Stationery Stores FC of Lagos was one of the powerhouses of Nigerian football. The club had won consecutive Challenge Cups, now known as the Federation Cup, in 1967 and 1968. They had musicians like Sunny Ade and Salawa Abeni composing albums about their triumphs. The club also hosted a prestigious friendly match against Santos FC of Brazil in 1969 at the Onikan stadium, with the great Pele present.

Stationery Stores had a thrall around Nigeria’s exciting talents, and Rufai was not immune to the appeal.

Despite his association with Sharks FC, Rufai sneaked to Lagos for screening. He had finished his final school exam on that same day, and he journeyed to Lagos in a night bus. His mother was unaware of the travel plans. Rufai was only 17.

“I dropped my pen after doing my final exam, and I came to Lagos for screening with Stationery Stores, and I was selected,” in a chat with TV360 in 2014.

“I came to the screening with my Christmas shoes. No football boots. My parents never knew I was coming to Lagos for football, so I had only brought my dress shoes with me. I went into the goalpost with my shoes. Then captain of the team, Yomi Peters, told me ‘you’re selected’.”

A year later, he was the Stationery Stores goalkeeper in the 1980 FA Cup final against Bendel Insurance. The team lost by a lone goal.

Despite losing the final, the team represented Nigeria at the 1981 CAF Winners’ Cup after the continental football body banned Bendel Insurance.
At 18, Rufai was the wall behind players like Godwin Obiyan, Wakilu Oyenuga, Tarila Okorowanta, as Stationery Stores reached the continental cup’s final.

Rufai saved a penalty in the first match of the two-legged final against Union Douala of Cameroon that finished 0-0. The teenage goalkeeper suffered an injury in the return leg and had to be stretchered off. The team lost the match 2-1 and also lost the trophy.

FIRST EAGLES’ GOALKEEPER TO PLAY OVERSEAS:
Rufai made his debut for the Green Eagles in a friendly match in December 1981. He featured for the national team at the 1984 African Cup of Nations.

In 1985, Rufai became the first-ever Nigerian goalkeeper to play abroad. He signed for Dragon FC of the Republic of Benin.

In a country that has produced legendary goalkeepers like Best Ogedengbe, Joseph Okala, Joseph Eriko, Peter Fregene, Rufai was the first of the lot to ply his trade professionally outside the country.

Rufai then moved to Belgium, where he spent six years with K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen and K.S.K. Beveren.

SAFE HANDS BEHIND EAGLES’ GOLDEN GENERATION:
The Super Eagles’ 1994-AFCON winning squad has often been hailed as the golden generation of Nigerian football. Rufai was the steady pair of hands behind the fritz of glitters.

At the competition in Tunisia, Rufai did not concede a goal until the semi-final against Côte d’Ivoire. In that game, he then saved Armani Yao’s kick during the penalty shootout, allowing Yekini to score the decider and send Nigeria to the final.

After the AFCON victory, Rufai and Clemens Westerhof, a former Super Eagles head coach, had a dispute, and the goalkeeper lost his number one spot in the team.

Six months later, he was reinstated to the top position with the captain band as a gesture of apology.
Six months later, he was reinstated to the top position with the captain band as a gesture of apology.

Rufai then captained Nigeria to the country’s debut at the World Cup in 1994. He was the man between the posts as the team won a group that had Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece.

He was also the team’s goalkeeper at the 1998 World Cup, after which he retired from the national team.

TURNED DOWN THE THRONE BECAUSE OF FOOTBALL CAREER

When Rufai’s father died in 1998, he was one of the candidates for the ancestral stool.

The goalkeeper was with Spain’s Deportivo La Coruna, and the club allowed him to return to Nigeria to discuss the throne succession plans.

This was how the legendary Household name Keeper Rufai was given birth to in Nigeria.

Marauding herdsmen have launched an attack on Wannune community, Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu visited the state to address the worsening insecurity.

According to residents who spoke with SaharaReporters on Friday evening, the attackers burned houses and everything in sight, forcing residents to flee for safety.

This latest attack raises concerns about the effectiveness of President Tinubu's recent visit and the measures put in place to address the insecurity in Benue State.

During his visit, Tinubu had met with stakeholders and directed the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to arrest those responsible for the killings.

The President's visit followed the massacre in Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, which saw around 200 people killed.
The attack sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many questioning the government's ability to protect its citizens.

The fresh attack in Wannune highlights the ongoing security challenges in Benue State and the need for effective measures to protect lives and property.

The government has been urged to take concrete steps to address the root causes of the violence and ensure the safety of its citizens.

Foreign AffairsPutin Told Is Time To Declare Full War On Ukraine By Kremlin Hardliners by Mj4199(op): 9:26pm On Jun 18, 2025
Vladimir Putin is under pressure to formally declare war on Ukraine by Russian hardliners who argue his “special military operation” has not gone far enough.

Anger grew after Ukraine smuggled dozens of drones into Russia on the back of freight trucks and launched a surprise attack on Moscow’s prized nuclear bombers on June 1.

According to the them, Russia has been considerate in some strike and actions towards Ukraine and it is high time a full declaration of war is given to the military to take necessary actions. Russia in the cause of the ongoing "special military operation" in Ukraine have sued it's own military for genocide, for whom many of it's service men had been suspended or punished heavily.

“Shock and outrage” is how one high-ranking Russian official described the mood in the Kremlin the day after Kyiv’s surprise strikes. Another Russian official told The Telegraph: “Like every thinking patriot, I took it as a personal tragedy.”

The fury ran so deep in some quarters that there were renewed calls for Putin to “declare war” on Ukraine – a demand that may seem baffling to Western observers, given that the conflict is in its fourth year and is Europe’s bloodiest since the Second World War.

But amongst Russia’s hardline nationalist elite, there is growing belief that Putin has not gone far enough, that he should formally declare war, recruit a million more men, and wipe out Volodymyr Zelensky’s government with daily missile strikes on Kyiv.
Isreal is going it, it's time we show Ukraine and it's allies that we restraint for so long already, and if they continue to push, we can also do more harms to anyone standing against us as a nation.
The Telegraph spoke to Kremlin insiders to assess whether Ukraine’s drone attack – dubbed Operation Spider’s Web – might push Russia to escalate even further. All agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.

“Explosions, drones, sabotage, and possibly even terrorist attacks are what the future may hold for us if the Zelensky regime is not completely destroyed,” said a current high-ranking Russian government official.

He described himself as hawkish and admitted sympathising with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner warlord who led a failed mutiny against Putin in June 2023 and was later killed in a plane crash.

“If Ukraine ceases to exist in its current form, the criminal underground will be demoralised,” he claimed.

Yet despite the scale of Ukraine’s strike, which damaged at least 20 Russian nuclear bombers, according to US estimates, the Kremlin has so far stuck to a more cautious approach.

“This did not catalyse a political discussion or a change in the format of military operations,” said a former senior Kremlin official who once directed operations against Ukraine.

“In the Russian power system, where inertia and preserving the current balance are essential, that speaks volumes.”

Another source, based in an analytical centre close to Russia’s defence ministry was blunt: “Could the president declare war on Kyiv? Right now, unlikely. As cynical as it may sound, the leadership is satisfied with the current situation.”

The hawkish opposition
Traditionally, opposition to Putin has come from liberal critics. But since the invasion, a new breed of nationalist opposition has emerged – figures who claim the Russian president is too cautious.

He argued that till this moment Putin still considered Ukraine as part of Russian, but enough is a enough, Putin should step up and open up Russian tactical weapon and let a full declaration of war be unleashed.

LiteratureRussia High-precision' Attack On Kyiv Hit 'military-industrial' Sites by Mj4199(op): 1:10pm On Jun 17, 2025
Russia’s army said it hit “military-industrial” sites near Kyiv, after Ukrainian officials said at least 14 people were killed in one of the largest drone and missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
Russia “launched a group strike with high-precision air, ground and sea-based weapons, as well as strike drones on military-industrial facilities in the Kyiv region,” the defence ministry said in a statement, which was similar to those it puts out after most major attacks, AFP noted.

Here are some pictures we are getting from the newswires, showing the aftermath of this “high-precision.

EU's foreign policy chief warns
Kallas also addressed the Russian attack on Ukraine overnight, calling it “one of the most devastating airstrikes on Kyiv in the war.”

She said:

“Russia remains unrelenting in its attacks, targeting civilians and prolonging its war. This is yet another sign Russia is just not interested in peace. So we must keep up the pressure.”

She also expressed her support for lowering Russian oil price cap.

Kallas also rejected the idea of Russia acting as a mediator in any other conflict, saying “while we see actions like this and he’s not mediator that can really be considered.”

PoliticsJust In: Iran Officially Raises It's Red Flag Of Revenge by Mj4199(op): 4:16pm On Jun 13, 2025
Iran officially raising its Red Flag of Revenge is a powerful symbolic gesture.

In Shia tradition, the red flag signifies martyrdom, injustice, and a call for vengeance-particularly for lives lost unjustly.

When flown over a holy site, it represents a solemn declaration that a major retaliation is imminent or justified.

In this context, it signals that Iran considers the recent Israeli strikes- especially the killing of senior officials and nuclear scientists-as crossing a red line, and it intends to respond decisively.
This is not just a military message but a cultural and emotional one, meant to rally internal unity and signal to the world that Iran views itself as provoked and prepared for serious consequences.

Foreign AffairsUkraine Is Bleeding For Three Days Straight Bombardment: Mayor Of Ukraine by Mj4199(op): 7:07am On Jun 11, 2025
Mayor of Ukraine’s second city says people may still be trapped under rubble after 17 drone strikes overnight. The attacks came a day after Moscow launched almost 500 drones at Ukraine in the largest overnight bombardment of the war.

Kyiv had been anticipating a strong Russian response to its Operation Spiderweb, which targeted Russian airbases on 1 June.

At least two people were killed and 28 injured in a massive Russian drone attack on Kharkiv overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday.

According to Kharkiv mayor Igor Terekhov, “seventeen strikes by enemy UAVs were carried out in two districts of the city this night”.
A five-storey building caught fire, with over 15 apartments burning, and several houses were struck as well.

Mr Terekhov warned that people could still be trapped under the rubble.

Separately, Russian forces launched a devastating five-hour drone assault on Kyiv on Tuesday in one of the largest attacks of the war on the capital so far.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow’s forces fired over 315 drones at Ukraine overnight, killing seven people.

“Every night, instead of a ceasefire, there have been massive strikes with Shaheds, cruise missiles and ballistics. Today was one of the largest strikes on Kyiv. Odesa, the Dnipro region and Chernihiv region were also targeted,” he said.

A Russian attack has damaged Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Ukraine's most significant monuments, according to Ukraine's culture minister.

Mykola Tochytskyi announced on Facebook that the overnight attack struck "at the very heart of our identity again". He called the 11th-century cathedral "the soul of all Ukraine" and a shrine that "survived for centuries".

"Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a shrine which survived for centuries and symbolises the birth of our statehood, was damaged," he said.

He added that the blast wave damaged the cornice on the main apse of the landmark. Video from the scene showed pieces of white plaster crumbled to the ground.

This is the first time since the start of the war that the cathedral has been damaged, first deputy director general of the site Vadym Kyrylenko told reporters.

According the Kremlin, Ukraine hide behind civilian facilities to attack us, the games plans were to play victims game and we are aware of this, we have been careful enough not to target civilians or any civilian's infrastructures, any attacks from such places must be met with consequences.

Foreign AffairsUkraine Should Expect More Retaliation: US Intelligence by Mj4199(op): 1:23pm On Jun 08, 2025
WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) - The United States believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin's threatened retaliation against Ukraine over its drone attack last weekend has not happened yet in earnest and is likely to be a significant, multi-pronged strike, U.S. officials told Reuters.
The timing of the full Russian response was unclear, with one source saying it was expected within days. A second U.S. official said the retaliation was likely to include different kinds of air capabilities, including missiles and drones.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity. They did not detail Russia's expected targets nor elaborate on intelligence matters. The first official said Moscow's attack would be "asymmetrical," meaning that its approach and targeting would not mirror Ukraine's strike last weekend against Russian warplanes.
Russia launched an intense missile and drone barrage at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday and Russia's Defense Ministry said the strike on military and military-related targets was in response to what it called Ukrainian "terrorist acts" against Russia. But the U.S. officials believe the complete Russian response is yet to come.
A Western diplomatic source said that while Russia's response may have started, it would likely intensify with strikes against symbolic Ukrainian targets like government buildings, in an effort to send a clear message to Kyiv.
Another, senior, Western diplomat anticipated a further devastating assault by Moscow. "It will be huge, vicious and unrelenting," the diplomat said. "But the Ukrainians are brave people."
The Russian and Ukrainian embassies in Washington and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Michael Kofman, a Russia expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said he expected Moscow might seek to punish Ukraine's domestic security agency, the SBU, for its role in last weekend's assault. To send a message, Russia could employ intermediate-range ballistic missiles for the attack, he said.

Putin told President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation on Wednesday that Moscow would have to respond to attack, Trump said in a social media post.
Trump later told reporters that "it's probably not going to be pretty."
"I don't like it. I said: 'Don't do it. You shouldn't do it. You should stop it,'" Trump said of his conversation with Putin. "But, again, there's a lot of hatred."

US President Donald Trump is outraged by Ukraine's decision to strike Russian air bases. The attack has caused anger in the White House and triggered a new wave of debate over the advisability of further support for Kyiv.
Source: The Atlantic, citing three administration officials and an outside White House adviser

Details: According to The Atlantic, Trump has in private conversations with advisers expressed deep dissatisfaction that Ukraine had taken such a step without coordinating with the United States.

The sources said that a new round of discussions has begun on whether continued military and financial support for Kyiv is justified following the Ukrainian attack. Trump's personal dissatisfaction with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was once again rekindled – the US president has called him a "hothead who make peace talk more difficult" who, in his opinion, could push the world towards a Third World War, he accused Zelensky of trying to get US and Russia into direct confrontation.

Russian forces have attacked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv using drones, missiles and guided bombs, killing at least four people, in an attack a local official called “the most powerful attack” on the area since the start of the war.

The series of attacks on Friday to Saturday came as an agreed exchange of prisoners of war appeared to hang in the balance with contradictory signals from Moscow and Kyiv.
Terekhov said of the early hours initial attack that 48 Iranian-made drones, two missiles and four guided bombs were fired before dawn at the city of 1.4 million people, located just 50km (30 miles) from the Russian border.

Kharkiv resident Alina Belous told The Associated Press news agency that she had tried to extinguish flames with buckets of water to rescue a young girl trapped inside a burning building who had called out for help.

Elsewhere in the south, Russian shelling hit the city of Kherson, killing a couple and damaging residential buildings, regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed. In Dnipro, two women, aged 45 and 88, were injured in separate attacks.

Officials said that at least six people were killed and dozens were wounded on Friday when Russia launched an aerial bombardment across Ukraine. Rescue workers in the city of Lutsk on Saturday recovered another body, raising the toll from Friday’s attacks to seven.
Moscow said Friday’s assault was carried out in response to Ukrainian “terrorist acts” against Russia, saying military sites were targeted.

The surge in Russian attacks follows an unprecedented Ukrainian drone operation last weekend that damaged nuclear-capable military aircraft at Russian airbases deep behind the front lines, including in Siberia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to retaliate for the attack, which Kyiv reportedly planned for 18 months using smuggled drones.

The strike reportedly targeted Russian bombers as they were being prepared for operations against Ukraine.

Ukraine, however, continues to push for a 30-day ceasefire and presented its latest proposal during talks in Istanbul on Monday. But Moscow has rejected calls for an immediate truce, insisting the war is a matter of national survival.

“For us, it is an existential issue,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. “It concerns our national interest, our safety, and the future of our country.”
