The fortieth day after Easter Sunday, commemorating the Ascensionof Christinto heaven, according to Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:2. In the Eastern Churchthis feastwas known asanalepsis, the taking up, and also as theepisozomene, the salvation—denoting that by ascending into His glory, Christcompleted the work of our redemption. The terms used in the West, ascensioand, occasionally, ascensa, signify that Christwas raised up by His own powers. Traditiondesignates Mount Olivetnear Bethanyas the place where Christleft the earth. The feastfalls on Thursday. It is one of the Ecumenical feastsranking with the feastsof the Passion, of Easterand of Pentecostamong the most solemnin the calendar, has a vigiland, since the fifteenth century, an octavewhich is set apart for a novenaof preparation for Pentecost, in accordance with the directions of Leo XIII. History The observance of this feastis of great antiquity. Although no documentary evidence of it exists prior to the beginning of the fifth century, St. Augustinesays that it is of Apostolicorigin, and he speaks of it in a way that shows it was the universal observance of the Churchlong before his time. Frequent mention of it is made in the writings of St. John Chrysostom, St. Gregory of Nyssa, and in the Constitution of the Apostles. The Pilgrimageof Sylvia (Peregrinatio Etheriae) speaks of the vigilof this feastand of the feastitself, as they were kept in thechurchbuilt over the grotto in Bethlehemin which Christwas born (Duchesne,Christian Worship, 491-515). It may be that prior to the fifth century the fact narrated in the Gospelswas commemorated in conjunction with the feastof Easteror Pentecost. Some believethat the much-disputed forty-third decreeof the Council of Elvira(c. 300) condemning the practice of observing a feaston the fortieth day after Easterand neglecting to keep Pentecoston the fiftieth day, implies that the proper usage of the timewas to commemorate the Ascensionalong with Pentecost. Representations of the mysteryare found in diptychsand frescoes dating as early as the fifth century. Customs Certain customs were connected with the liturgyof this feast, such as the blessingof beans and grapes after the Commemoration of the Dead in the Canon of the Mass, the blessingof first fruits, afterwards done on Rogation Days, the blessingof a candle, the wearing of mitresby deaconand subdeacon, the extinction of the paschal candle, and triumphal processionswith torches and banners outside thechurchesto commemorate the entry of Christinto heaven. Rockrecords theEnglish customof carrying at the head of the processionthe banner bearing the device of the lion and at the foot the banner of the dragon, tosymbolizethe triumph of Christin His ascensionover the evil one. In somechurchesthe scene of the Ascensionwas vividly reproduced by elevating the figure of Christabove the altarthrough an opening in the roof of thechurch. In others, whilst the figure of Christwas made to ascend, that of the devilwas made to descend. In the liturgiesgenerally the day is meant to celebrate the completion of the work of our salvation, the pledge of our glorification with Christ, and His entry into heavenwith our human natureglorified.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) released a statement in the early hours of Tuesday morning explaining that it is treating the incident as a terrorist attack, although that's a working hypothesis with details remaining thin on the ground. "Just before 22:35 on Monday May 22, 2017, police were called to reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena," the GMP statement reads. "So far 19 (now updated to 22) people have been confirmed dead, with around 50 others injured. This is currently being treated as a terrorist incident until police know otherwise." UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the incident, saying: "We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack. "All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected." All political parties will suspend campaigning ahead of the of next month's General Election for what will be a period of national mourning. WHERE DID THE EXPLOSION HAPPEN? The Manchester Arena is in the city centre of the north-west UK, two miles north of Manchester United's Old Trafford and two miles west of Manchester City's Etihad Stadium. Although initial reports suggested the explosion happened in the foyer, Manchester Arena released a statement in the aftermath claiming the explosion happened outside as an estimated 21,000 people left the concert just after 22:30 "We can confirm there was an incident as people were leaving the Ariana Grande show last night," it said. "The incident took place outside the venue in a public space. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims." Anyone in the UK concerned about the safety of relatives can dial the emergency number set up by police, which is 0161 856 9400

On 30 May 1969, Bruce Mayrock, a young white American student of Jewish descent at Columbia University, set fire to himself near the UN building in New York City. He could no longer live in a world, which was prepared to accept the atrocities being committed against the Igbos in Nigeria during the Nigeria -Biafra civil war. He felt the Ultimate price was what he needed to pay to draw the attention of the world to the Biafran genocide. It was also for the same reason that Steve Job, gave up his faith, because he could not believe in a God that would standby and allow Nigeria to commit the genocidal crime that was evolving. Bruce died of his injuries, having given his life on behalf of a black African people, whom he had never met, thereby joining the very few who have shown the greatest of love, by giving up their lives. Jesus said, greater love has no man that a man will give his life for his friends. Bruce Mayrock, showed the greatest of love in that he gave his life for people he did not know, for the only reason that they are human beings and share the same humanity with him. Bruce Mayrock's sacrifice was not in vain. No act of pure love is ever in vain. It may be forgotten for a time or may even be seen as lack of judgement by some, but it will always stand the test of time as the best of humanity. Even though Bruce's sacrifice, could not convince western countries that it was right to side with those who were fighting for freedom, Mayrock death demonstrates that in the midist of evil, there will always be those, who will chose the part of love and goodness. By his sacrifice, Bruce Mayrock is one of the finest men who ever lived. He showed great idealism, altruism, and courage. His memory will away remain alive as long as there are Igbos and men who love their fellow men in the world. Igbos will always mourn his death and whenever the story of Biafra is told, Bruce Mayrock will always be remembered. To live in the hearts of those who love you, is not to die. Rest in peace, you are remembered today and always, one of the finest men, who ever lived. The struggle continues. |
U have tried every other churches, why not try Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, visit the nearest Catholic church, and ask of their chapel, no prayer of purity has ever gone unanswered when you vist d chapel.....talk to Jesus lonly in the blessed sacrament coupled with the rosery of our Mother Mary....do this for 9 days and watch the wonders he will do.....remember, no church in history has more miracles and testimony than the catholic church |
rossyc:Sister Lucia, the third visionary, lived much longer, dying in 2005 at the age of 97. The Church is currently examining documents and collecting testimonies for her beatification cause. |
