Pope Francis is seriously considering total shut-down of the 163 parishes in Catholic Diocese of Ahiara in Imo State over the protracted crisis generated by appointment of Peter Okpalaeke as Bishop. Okpalaeke’s appointment four years ago after the demise of Bishop Victor Chikwe has been vehemently resisted by Reverend Fathers of Mbaise extraction and the Laity, leading to a stalemate. Ahiara Cathedral and the Bishop’s Court have remained under lock and key with nobody to administer Holy Communion ever since. A key figure at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria confided in one of our correspondents the Pope would be left with no choice than to wield the big sticks if the stalemate continues. “Never has the appointment of a Bishop been this hotly contested. It is a shame and very embarrassing to the CSN and the Pope.” He said since the gladiators have indicated they would not back down, the Pope might have to close down the 163 parishes in the Diocese. “If you consider how much patience the Pope has displayed, you will agree that it won’t be out of place for him to act now. “Any moment from now, he may announce the parishes are no longer under the Vatican. In that instance, they can get somewhere else to go. He indicated that some of the recalcitrant Priests fuelling opposition to the Bishopric appointment may also be derobed to serve as deterrent to others. The embattled Okpalaeke however declared yesterday that he is unperturbed by opposition to his appointment. He declared he was awaiting his installation despite protests from Priest of Ahiara extraction. He spoke during the 70th birthday ceremony of Monsignor Johnbosco Akam at his Uga country home in Aguata Council of Anambra State. According to him, “What they are saying is foreign to my vocation; my vocation comes from God, declared by the church. “I have been living my life as a fulfilled priest. Wherever I found myself as a priest, surely I will see God on the last day. That is my mission.” He spoke just as investigations revealed the Reverend Fathers have adopted new measures to fight the appointment, which they said was not transparent. Though they have all written the letter of apology as demanded by Pope Francis as a punishment for resisting the authority of the Church, checks revealed they have decided to operate from the sidelines while urging on Laity leaders to continue with the struggle. It was gathered they weighed the consequences of disobeying the Vatican and mobilised the laity to defiantly reject Okpalaeke. President of the Ahiara Diocesan Catholic Men Organisation, Chief Gerald Anyanwu, told reporters the Diocese is not rebelling against the Pope but demanding justice and equity. “We are not questioning the decision of the Pope but we will not accept Okpalaeke as Bishop. The process of his appointment did not follow laid down procedures for the appointment of Bishops.” Another member of the Laity, Sir Sebastian Eke, said: “Our position is justice. We don’t see any reason why somebody from this Diocese or any other Diocese from Imo State cannot be appointed as the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese. “All we are saying is that we don’t want Okpalaeke and trying to force him on his on us is not justice.” Vice President of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) in the Diocese, Dr Liona Ohanu, who spoke on behalf of the women, appealed to the Vatican to listen to the demand of the people. She said: “We respect the Pope and cannot disobey his directive as our Supreme Head but the issue of Okpalaeke is an exemption and we will not welcome him as the Bishop of this Diocese. Let the Pope appoint any other person from anywhere we will accept but not Okpalaeke.” While the Laity was protesting, the Priests converged in one of the buildings in the Cathedral from where they were monitoring the development and issuing directives, apparently operating from the background to avoid further infuriating the Vatican. But the top Catholic leader in Abuja said the Pope would act any moment to stop “the embarrassment these ethnic jingoists have caused the church.” (The Nation) |

Please dear nairalanders most of us are victims to this act, is it a sin, especially when done on purpose? Do we show lack of respect to God while we fart? Does God answer prayers during this act? Knowing we are human, how well can we avoid this if actually is bad without the interruption of the prayer? Happy Sunday |

As the furore surrounding Neymar's proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain continues to escalate, Barcelona have fuelled the fire by posting a timely barb on their official Instagram account. On the very day the aforementioned transfer hit a controversial stumbling block at the La Liga offices, Barca posted a photo of their players celebrating in joyous unison on the training ground with an inescapably pointed one-word caption. That one word was "Team." Ouch. Hardly the most subtle of covert messages. In fact, we believe that is what the youth of today might well refer to as "salty." However, given that Neymar is reportedly set to sign a five-year contract that will earn around £60 every minute at PSG, we struggle to believe he'll be too upset.

Emerging report indicates that heavily-armed security operatives, on Sunday, raided the Abuja home of Mary Ekpenyong, an Aide to the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio. A private security man guarding the compound located in Jabi District, said the armed men forcefully entered the house, after breaking down doors with heavy equipment. “It was about exactly 10.30 am that six armed persons came to the compound, and asked for Madam, and I told them the family traveled to Akwa Ibom”, the security man told Next Edition. “When I asked them to identify themselves, they shouted at me to shut up. One of them asked me to produce the keys to the house, and threatened to deal with me, if I don’t oblige them. “They told me they came to find the stockpile of arms and money, hidden in the compound by the Senate Minority Leader. “Since I couldn’t produce the keys, they brought out some equipment and forced the doors open, and ransacked all the rooms.” The security man said the operatives painstakingly searched the rooms for over three hours, while holding him hostage. However, a source at the Headquarters of the People Democratic Party, PDP, hinted that the Federal Government was targeting Mr. Akpabio, because of his influence at the Senate. The source, who pleaded not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the party received intelligence report that the government would soon clamp down on key opposition figures in the country. “As soon as the Supreme Court delivered the ruling that restored order in our party, the APC-led government became jittery, because with the PDP bouncing back, they would not have a smooth time lying to Nigerians any longer”, the source said. “With the PDP now at peace, they are afraid of what would happen in 2019, and are desperately trying to cow our senior members.” “We learnt that they are targeting high ranking members of the party, including the National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and Senate Minority Leader, Godswil Akpabio, among others. “They are also angry, because of the failure of the Senate to confirm the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, and they believe that the PDP Senators, are the ones blocking the confirmation.” Attempts to speak with the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Moshod Jimoh, and the Spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, were unsuccessful, as calls to their mobile phones were not answered. |
African football is no stranger to death at stadiums, and two more fans lost their lives in South Africa's Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. Poor crowd control, overzealous policing and fan misbehaviour have all led to a series of incidents at stadiums across the continent over the last few decades, bringing the pall of death to football in Africa. KweséESPN rounds up the most infamous of these tragic incidents. ZAMALEK STADIUM - CAIRO, EGYPT Date: February 17, 1974 Death toll: 48-50 A friendly match between Egyptian giants Zamalek and Czechoslovakian side Dukla Prague turned deadly when an estimated 80,000 people tried to enter a stadium that held half that. Walls collapsed, people were crushed and reports suggest between 48 and 50 people lost their lives. OPPENHEIMER STADIUM - ORKNEY, SOUTH AFRICA Date: January 13, 1991 Death toll: 42 Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates met in a pre-season friendly at the 23,000 seater Oppenheimer Stadium, but reports say at least 30,000 were let into the venue. They were not separated and when Chiefs were awarded a dubious goal, Pirates fans reportedly turned violent, attacking rival supporters. This caused a stampede that left 42 people dead. ELLIS PARK - JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA Date: April 11, 2001 Death toll: 43 The 60,000 seater stadium in Johannesburg was already full to capacity for the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates when an estimated 30,000 additional fans tried to force their way into the venue. This caused a crush in which 43 people, including children, were killed. The situation was reportedly exacerbated by police firing tear gas towards the surging fans. The incident caused a raft of changes in terms of ticketing and crowd control at South African league matches. ACCRA SPORTS STADIUM - ACCRA, GHANA Date: May 9, 2001 Death toll: 127 The worst stadium disaster in Africa occurred after a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, with police fearful before the game that there would be trouble. Hearts netted two late goals to win the game, after which Kotoko through objects onto the pitch and broke seats. The police fired tear gas into the stands and from the resultant stampede, 127 souls were lost. Police were blamed in the aftermath, though nobody was ultimately held responsible. STADE FÉLIX HOUPHOUËT-BOIGNY - ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST Date: 29 March, 2009 Death toll: 19 A 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier between home side Ivory Coast and Malawi turned deadly when police fired tear gas at rowdy fans, causing a stampede. Nineteen people were killed and 135 injured. The match was played despite the incident before kick-off, with the Ivorians winning 5-0. PORT SAID STADIUM - PORT SAID, EGYPT Date: 1 February, 2012 Death toll: 74 A riot after an Egyptian league fixture between home side al Masri and Cairo giants Al Ahly caused the death of 74 people, with more than 500 injured. Al-Masri fans reportedly attacked Ahly supporters with knives, swords and stones, and there were allegations that the riot was politically motivated as the Arab Spring gripped the country. Some 73 people were ultimately charged with various crimes relating to the atrocity and so far 10 had been sentenced to death, another 37 received prison sentences and 26 were acquitted . 30 JUNE STADIUM - CAIRO, EGYPT Date: 8 February, 2015 Death toll: 28 Another tragedy for Egypt as it became clear that football could not be played in the country without tensions rising. Some 28 fans died, most crushed to death, in a stampede at an Egyptian league match between Zamalek and ENPPI. Police had used tear gas to disperse fans trying to force their way into the stadium. In the wake of the tragedy, the Egyptian league was halted for almost two months, but did resume in late March. As a result of the tragedy, the Egyptian league was not played for the next two years. BINGU STADIUM - LILONGWE, MALAWI Date: July 5, 2017 Death toll: Eight Eight people, including seven children, were killed in a stampede ahead of a match between Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers that was supposed to be a celebration of Malawi's independence.
