Politics › Re: On Oshodi Market Demolition by modath(f): 4:06pm On Jan 20, 2016 |
mapet: The Lagos State government did provide an alternative market but the traders rejected it for sundry reasons, including the fact that the structures are storey buildings, rather than bungalows which they preferred for ease of moving their goods. They were not persuaded by the explanation that land is a very scarce commodity in Lagos in view of the state’s small geographical size and the exponential growth rate of its population currently put at 21million. Nor were they interested in the argument that electronics dealers in bigger markets on Lagos Island have their stalls in storey buildings, to say nothing about manufacturers in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere producing in high rise buildings. I was to understand from Kalu Onuma, the efficient head of the Ndigbo Lagos secretariat, that the Igbo leadership in Lagos has for long been advising the market leaders unsuccessfully to drop their opposition to doing business in stalls located in storey buildings. Frankly, the leadership of the Owonifari Market is difficult. It hired the services of Ben Nwabueze, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Africa’s most engaging constitutional law scholar as well as the founding secretary general of Ohaneze Ndigbo, in their fight against market relocation. They quickly disagreed. The traders now turned to Jimoh Lasisi, SAN, a fine gentleman. He took a dispassionate look at their case and told them that the law was not in their favour, all the more so since the Land Use Act vested land ownership in the state governor. The traders had relied on a letter from an official of the Federal Ministry of Housing to argue that the state government had no right over them since they were operating under a Federal Government bridge. Jimoh asked them to look for a negotiated settlement. That was how they approached me. “These traders do not like the truth or professional advice so I am surprised that they could meet someone like you”, Lasisi told me when I visited him in his office at Onipan on Lagos Mainland. I have taken the pain to highlight for some of you that either dyslexic, have reading difficulties or comprehension skills & would go the high highfalutin way of claiming victim of one thing or the other....... Thank me later.... |

TonyeBarcanista: Why did Amaechi decide to cancel the project? That would have been the first and only Maritime University in Nigeria. We all know the development it will bring to Warri as a whole and also the prospect it will offer locals. Amaechi did not do well. I can bet that no true Oduan or Arewan will cancel project that is cited on their land. Amaechi must be called to order by the President. Damn! Really , is your argument predicated on: availability of funds, viability, sincerity of purpose & economic importance or just simply, ethnic/tribal alignment? 13bn has gone down the drain with nothing to show for it, by same Niger Deltans.... What am i even having an opinion for, it has been cancelled & wishing on NL aint going to change that... P.s.... This doesn't change our oyel bloc agreement bah ?.. |

Probably wanted nothing to do with PDP STATES after OBJ's tricky machinations that culminated in the annihilation of AD & 'mandate robberies' of other Sw states circa 2003..... A nor get time to argue with people for FUN. @ bollinger, leave this matter alone, that you haven't had a personal encounter doesn't mean the points are not valid. you don't have to personally experience chemotherapy or fracture to know they are painful... I was made to wait 3+ hours @ POE despite having the correct visa for my intention, while mails were flying around to verify my story, my cash was counted in the full glare of everyone, my cards were asked for, all my docs were read line by line, asked tons of questions but through all these, I raised no objection & provided what they requoired... My phone wasn't looked through though... Maybe the officer was already satisfied by then but God being my witness, I witnessed people's phones being looked into, most were allowed to go but a few entered their hands.. |

irondome: Two different things, bag search happens every now and then, even here in Lagos. Phone search is a definite No No. Personally, I find it demeaning as they wouldn't try that with any self respecting person.
Again, any self respecting person would say No and cite privacy policy and subsequent offer to make available any document or answer any question that would help them come to a decision. I am sure you would do just fine if your purpose of entry is genuine. We won't argue, anytime you are chanced , go to the give birth in USA thread & read transcripts of ladies who left Nigeria with B2 (intention in the open) visas, ample cash & Dr's correspondences & still had hours to wait while the presented docs were verified, phone checked & money counted in the full glare of everyone there.... Someone was asked to log in to her online banking platform, show them her balance & they googled rate in order to confirm that her story about being in a position to pay & not resort to medicaid added up... They are random but once sec inspection enters, best thing is to just be calm & collected.. |

10. Doesn't make any sense. They may request politely to look through your phone, however, you have the right to politely say NO as well. Polite gini They wil not only invade your privacy by upturning your bag, going through your phones& asking you personal questions (during secondary inspection), they will do it in the presence of everyone around!! They are hoping for a reason to deny you entry, you mouthing off & being recalcitrant will make it super easy for them!!! |
