godG: Summarization is arguably one of the easiest aspects of O Level English. When you are asked to summarize, you are expected to brilliantly reduce the size of a text without losing its meaning. For instance, if I ask you to summarize the Nigeria National Anthem into one one sentence, I'm expecting you to tell me what the anthem is all about.
For me, the summary of our anthem in one sentence would be something like: A call to patriotism.
Importantly, it is good you know that when summarizing, there is no fixed answer to how a summary of a piece should look like. It is a subjective thing. By subjective, I mean that how you summarize a piece could be different from how youe friend will. Just make sure the message is not tampered with.
So, my own summary of our anthem is "A call to patriotism." Someone else could say "A call to serve.", "A call to chilvary.", etc. From these variations, what have you noticed? Patriotism is substituted with other synonymous words. And this brings us to our next point.
Please be informed that synonyms/antonyms/pronouns, deletion, etc. are important tools in summarization. They are used to avoid redundancy or unnecessary repetitions of some words.(This is one of the hallmarks of summarization.) Let us now look at this example:
Tola is a very caring girl. She has a the hearth of an angel, and this is perhaps why people want to share their problem with Tola. Tola is the perfection of beauty and love. Tola has made me understood that we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give.
Assuming you have been told to summarize this into two sentences, the first thing you should do is to look at any repeated word and find a substitute for it. So, first, instead of repeating 'Tola', you can substitute it with a pronoun, (words used instead of a noun).
After that you can ow try to identify the core message of the piece and start your summary. This, for me, would be summarized as:
To is a caring lady. She is loved by mamh because she cares.
Let me just tell you that the first thing you should do is to understand the passage. This is very important. You can't summarize what you don't know. Once you know what the passage is about, you can now use your own words to summarize without distorting the meaning of the passage.
Let me tell you again, summarization is subjective don't be afraid to be creative when summarizing but you must not deviate or distort meanings.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you are still confused.
***Please, excuse any typo.
cc Pprovost good one. Much gracias! Waiting for more. |

Who's controlling South Sudan oil ? Is'nt it the same America? What of Iraq and Libya?. They use thier head to takeover pple's resources with the popular tag name(peace keeping). I've read many journalists/political science reviews about the possible events to happen in nigeria with the presence of so called America. They'll soon take over the control of the niger delta oil. |
