Oba Charles Ibitoye, the Olomu of Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara, has joined his ancestors.

His demise was confirmed on Saturday by Chief Festus Awoniyi, the Petu of Omu-Aran.

Awoniyi broke the news of the monarch’s passage shortly after the meeting of the Olomu-in-Council on Saturday in Omu-Aran.

Oba Ibitoye was reported to have died at the age of 65 years after a brief illness.

The rumour of his death, which became viral on social media early on Friday, had thrown the community into an atmosphere of tension and anxiety.

Awoniyi disclosed that the Elemosho of Omu-Aran, Chef Jimoh Olaiya, and his team had been instructed to announce and move around the town to clear the markets as tradition demands.

According to Awoniyi, a curfew has been imposed from 9.00 p.m and 5.00 a.m with effect from Saturday.

“We just finished our meeting at the palace where the news of Olomu’s demise was officially broken."

“There will be no buying and selling for three consecutive market days and a curfew imposed as a mark honour for the late Olomu,” he said.

Oba Ibitoye, who hailed from Ikoja Compound in the town, is from Ijawusi Ruling House.

He ascended the throne in January 1993 after the demise of Oba Suleiman Durotoye Abegunde.

The monarch, who was a retired civil servant with the State Ministry of Finance, is survived by his wife, Olori Omowumi Ibitoye and four children.

In his reactions, Chief Bisi Adeyemi, the President, Omu-Aran Development Association (ODA), said that the association was in the process of notifying the council chairman and the State Governor for an official announcement.

Also reacting, Chief Jide Adebayo, a community leader and former Executive Director of NAN, said that Oba Ibitoye would be missed for his exemplary leadership style.

“He is a kind-hearted, industrious and a leader per excellence."

“He was always concern and passionate about peace, unity and development of the community,” Adebayo said.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick revealed the FA consulted with the Managers – who are incidentally French – after the 2018 FIFA World Cup third round draw.

Rohr’s name was consistently offered up by Wenger and Houllier as the candidate that was experienced enough to deliver the Super Eagles from the group of death.

The Franco-German had spells with Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso in his sojourn on the continent.

Rohr was appointed on an initial two-year contract in August 2016, taking over a team in turmoil following Sunday Oliseh’s resignation.

Speaking about the Super Eagles Technical Adviser’s quality, Pinnick insists now there is no doubt Rohr was the perfect choice.

“When we saw the draw for the World Cup, we knew we were condemned [by a tough group] and we determined that we must overcome it.

“The first thing we identified was that we needed a new coach so we reached out to Arsene Wenger, to Gerard Houllier, and one name kept coming to the fore: Rohr.

“Now we have no regrets about hiring him and he has proven himself not just by qualifying for the World Cup, but with the foundation he is laying for our team, which now has young players from the age of 19, [he is] doing well,” Pinnick told a gathering recently.

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme is dead.

A statement from his family signed by his brother and the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra State, Igwe Laz Ekwueme said that he died by 10:00 pm in a London clinic, Sunday.

The statement read: “Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON.

“The sad event occurred at the London Clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday 19th November 2017.”

Ekwueme had slumped in his Enugu residence, and immediately taken to the Memfys Neurosurgery Hospital Enugu, where he relapsed and went into a coma.

As soon as he was stabilized in the hospital he was flown to London in an air ambulance last week.
