The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched a new digital payment system that allows business owners to pay for their operating permits and property rates using mobile shortcodes, popularly known as USSD Code. This newly introduced payment infrastructure is a huge move for AMA to enhance efficiency and transparency in Accra Ghana. To use this service, you can simply dial *222*33# for business operating permits and *222*55# for property rates. The shortcode service allows business owners and individuals to easily and directly complete transactions from their mobile devices without internet connection. AMA’s adoption of this mobile payment system is part of its broader strategy to streamline revenue collection, improve data accuracy, enhance service delivery and digitising public services-a trend increasingly seen in cities across Africa. This streamlined approach aims to save time, reduce congestion, and improve service delivery for the city’s business community. Mr. Richard Tagoe, Assembly Member for the Korle Bu Electoral Area and Acting Chairman of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro, expressed support for the new platform, stating it would help the AMA secure its revenue and eliminate leakages caused by corruption. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, even for individuals with basic mobile phones. It supports payments for property rates, market tolls, parking tolls, and commercial signage. Users can check their bills via SMS, a dedicated customer portal, or USSD, with payments accepted through mobile money, bank cards, or banks.
