In 2024, the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is vital in Nigeria as part of the government's push to increase tax compliance and improve revenue collection. Scroll down to learn how to get your TIN online. With a growing need to diversify the economy beyond oil, the government is focusing on tax reforms, and the TIN plays a central role in tracking taxpayers and ensuring accountability. It's now mandatory for businesses and individuals to generate a taxpayer identification number, making it easier for the government to collect taxes and fund national development projects. Beyond taxation, the TIN is also crucial for accessing various financial services. Whether it's opening a business account, applying for loans, or participating in business transactions, having a TIN is often a requirement. This makes it an essential tool for entrepreneurs and businesses operating in Nigeria's evolving economy, where financial inclusion and digitization are becoming more prominent. Additionally, the TIN is necessary for accessing government support programs and subsidies. With the government's focus on economic growth and international tax compliance, the TIN helps prevent tax evasion and ensures that both local and international transactions are properly monitored. This helps the Nigerian government align with global tax standards, while also fostering a more transparent and efficient tax system at home. Note: As an individual, getting a TIN does not necessarily mean you’ll be taxed by government. Here’s how to get your TIN online and all the conditions that’s attached to it: https://www.opaynews.com.ng/2024/10/how-to-apply-and-get-your-tax-identification-number-in-Nigeria.html |

Sowore is demanding 100 million Naira in damages from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) over a five-year account freeze. Omoyele Sowore has commenced a legal battle against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) for restricting/suspending his bank accounts for five years. The restriction can actually be considered a post-no-debit (PND) limitation whereby money that come in can never go out unless the restriction is lifted. Learn more about Post No Debit (PND) here: https://www.capitalistledger.com/2024/10/moniepoint-post-no-debit.html In a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Sowore, through his lawyer Inibehe Effiong, argued that the freezing of his bank accounts was both unlawful and a violation of his human rights. However, some banking experts have cited that a bank account freeze typically occurs due to legal disputes, regulatory issues, or investigations, and it can be applied to protect the bank or comply with legal orders. Based on the length of five years, it likely involves serious legal or compliance concerns. Meanwhile, Sowore disclosed that his bank accounts were frozen by the bank without following proper legal procedures, causing significant financial hardship for him. The sudden restriction on his accounts left him unable to access his funds, leading to considerable frustration. In response, Sowore is seeking N100 million in damages from GTB, claiming the bank's actions were unjust and violated his rights, as outlined in the legal suit he has filed. "The arbitrary freezing of my client’s accounts without due process is not only illegal but also a blatant violation of his fundamental rights," said Sowore's Lawyer. In addition to the N100M Sowore is requesting from GTBank, he also order the bank to lift any restriction placed on his account. Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, journalist, and politician. He is the founder of the online news platform Sahara Reporters, which focuses on investigative journalism and reporting on corruption and governance issues in Nigeria. He's also the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC). He's recent lawsuit against GTBank follows several complaints to the bank without any good responds. Sowore said his account has been frozen since 2019, "rendering it inoperable by the bank, with no formal explanation offered." Despite numerous complaints, the Respondent has declined to remove the restrictions. A demand letter dated April 23, 2024, was sent to the Respondent, but it was not effective. |

Nigeria has emerged as the third-largest debtor to World Bank’s IDA, gets $2.2 billion under Tinubu Govt. According to the World Bank’s financial statements, Nigeria’s exposure to the IDA rose by 14.4% from $14.3 billion in the fiscal year (FY) of 2023 to $16.5 billion in FY2024. This $2.2 billion increase places Nigeria among the top three IDA debtors for the first time, a notable shift from its previous position as the fourth-largest borrower in 2023. The most interesting part of it is that this debt is different from any outstanding loan from the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). In total, Nigeria had secured $4.95 billion in loans from the World Bank under Tinubu amid concerns over the country’s rising external debt servicing costs. Data from the external debt stock report of the Debt Management Office (DMO) shows that Nigeria owes the World Bank a total of $15.59 billion as of March 31, 2024 and the govt is still willing to get more by approving four loan projects totaling $2 billion before this year end. Abeg, are we not in soup bayi ![]() Read the full gist here: https://www.opaynews.com.ng/2024/09/nigeria-becomes-3rd-largest-debtor-to-world-bank-ida.html |

While Nigerians face long waits and challenges at filling stations to get petrol, their neighbors in Benin and Niger Republic are using fuel smuggled from Nigeria to power their vehicles and generators, according to an investigation by PUNCH. In 2024, fuel queues have reappeared in Nigeria, causing frustration among motorists and leading to higher transportation costs for passengers due to fuel scarcity and rising pump prices. However, PUNCH’s reporters who visited Cotonou and Calavi in Benin found a different situation, where petrol stations were calm with few customers and no long queues. The investigation revealed that much of the fuel sold on the black market in Benin and Niger is smuggled from Nigeria. Despite bans on fuel smuggling, black market traders in Niger still manage to get supplies through illegal means, often using bush paths or waterways. This has kept fuel prices lower in these countries compared to Nigeria. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) stated that it is working to resolve the fuel shortage, but the Independent Petrol Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) pointed out that marketers are struggling to get petrol due to distribution challenges and rising transportation costs.
