BusinessMTN Nigeria Seeks 100% Tariff Hike From The NCC by Monepoint(op): 3:48pm On Jan 03, 2025
The largest telecommunication company in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria is requesting the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approval for it to increase tariffs 100%.

The telecom company emphasized that operational cost pressures and the need for industry sustainability are the reasons behind its move.

The request seeks to double the current tariffs for calls and data services. MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, disclosed this during an interview on Arise TV. He noted that the industry’s long-term viability hinges on implementing such measures.

The telecom sector in Nigeria is facing significant financial pressures due to factors including inflation, volatile exchange rates, and increasing energy costs. These challenges have prompted operators to seek tariff increase to maintain service quality and network expansion.

In December 2024, Elon Musk’s Starlink increased its subscription fee after it had suspended the price increment it announced in September 2024 following a rebuttal from the NCC which said Starlink did not secure approval for the increment contrary to existing rules.

In a message to its subscribers notifying them of the increment, Starlink said current customers would start paying the new price starting from January 27th, 2025. However, the NCC has not yet approved the MTN's proposed increase.

Toriola expressed uncertainty about obtaining the full approval. He acknowledges the regulator’s sensitivity to the current economic situation in the country.

Business“my Bank App Isn’t Working”: New Tricks Nigerians Use To Solicit Money Under Fal by Monepoint(op): 9:17pm On Dec 29, 2024
“My Bank app Isn’t working”: New tricks Nigerians use to solicit money under false pretenses.

Some dishonest Nigerians have found new ways to trick people into giving them money. One of their common methods is pretending to have issues with their bank app or network.

For example, someone you know might message you saying, “My bank app isn’t working. Could you help me send N40,000 to someone called Bright?” (Bright is just used as an example here—not a real name). They promise to repay the money later, but it’s all a scam.

Must Read: How to Find Intermediary Bank Information 👉👉 https://www.capitalistledger.com/2024/12/how-to-find-intermediary-bank-information.html

This trick isn’t entirely new, but it has become more popular recently, especially as the year comes to an end. During this time, people tend to be busier, more generous, and less cautious, which makes them easier targets.

Scammers often count on the trust and kindness of their victims, taking advantage of relationships and friendships to make their lies seem believable.

What makes this tactic work is that the request appears simple and urgent. Most people are reluctant to say no when a friend seems to be in trouble and needs help quickly.

Must Read: How to Create Temu Seller Account 👉👉👉 https://www.capitalistledger.com/2024/12/how-to-create-temu-seller-account.html

Unfortunately, once the money is sent, the scammer disappears or continues to make excuses, leaving the victim unable to recover their funds.

To protect yourself, always verify such requests, even if they come from someone you know. Call the person directly to confirm their story or delay sending money until you’re certain it’s genuine.

By being cautious and questioning unusual requests, you can avoid falling victim to these scams. However, bank app network is not the only you should watch out for. People also frame money request in other ways such as Family emergency and Health related pleas e.t.c.

Must Read: Your Money May Not Be Safe In Bank Even If It’s NDIC-Insured. Here’s why 👉👉 https://www.capitalistledger.com/2024/12/ndic-insured-banks-too-are-not-safe.html

While it’s true that some people genuinely need help at critical moments, these new tactics make it harder to differentiate between those in need and those exploiting trust.

Unfortunately, questionable individuals have made it increasingly difficult to extend help without fear of being scammed.

If you discover that a friend or acquaintance has a pattern of using these excuses to borrow money they never repay, it’s wise to reassess your relationship.

Financial trust is a cornerstone of healthy friendships; if it’s being repeatedly violated, it might be time to set boundaries for your peace of mind.

Big man, big wahala. We saw it coming with the approval of NCC giving a go ahead for telcos to Increase tariffs. However, for what it's worth and with the exchange rate against the dollar, I don't think it's that bad, na devaluation of the naira dey do us.
Meanwhile, we're waiting for MTN, Airtel, Glo etc to notify us of their increase, it's been 16yrs without a major shakeup.
Aswear, those companies are trying but we Nigerians don’t know their value. Now, they will also make move of hiking their prices now. NCC is blocking them but now that NCC has approved Starlink to hike price, I want to see reasons for the continual delay of MTN, Airtel, GLo
