THE EMERGENCY PRESIDENT AND THE EMERGING ISSUE.
By
Ade Abiodun

If there is anything that has been characteristic of the Buhari presidency in 15 months it is the total display and manifestation of "unpreparedness" for governance. It seemed as if he had no thought of even participating in the 2015 elections when hurriedly a cabal of self-appointed Nigerian saviors as testified by Obasanjo gathered together to organize an emergency rescue mission for Nigeria's aircraft by employing a truck driver as the pilot.
After failing woefully in every sector of national life and sending the economy into a spiral depression Mr Buhari in his characteristic manner is planning an emergency solution.
I wrote extensively before the 2015 elections that Mr Buhari is perpetually handicapped and unable to function as a democratic president in a pluralistic society as Nigeria. It's not an insult he just doesn't have it in him. His background his training his philosophy of life do not empower him to be a lover of debate or dissent hence there is no formula under the sun that can make Buhari a good civilian president for Nigeria.
The facts were evident since he assumed office that he never wanted a vibrant and functional National Assembly, he belittled the relevance of the weekly FEC meetings, he queried the wisdom of our judges and wanted his and only his voice to be heard.
Well today the same man is seeking a legal route to establish his Pharaonic reign by asking for emergency powers on the economy when we are not suffering from a postwar trauma or outbreak of disease epidemics. It would be the height of madness for our legislators whom he has pummeled terribly to even agree to such proposals. Why should they? Who does he think he is? Some kind of Moses or Jesus? He should just go and sit down and let us manage the nonsense on ground for the next three years and go back to his cow-rearing business. The only beneficiaries of such emergency powers would be Buhari, APC contractors and their hangers on.
We say #NoToEmergencyPowers

PoliticsRe: Why I Excluded Private Sector Players In Economic Team – Buhari by monitoragent: 1:39am On Jul 25, 2016
If he said so, then i agree with d president this time
soldierkunle:
President Muhammadu Buhari said he was averse to the inclusion of members of the private sector in his administration’s Economic Management Team because such people frequently steer government policy to suit their own narrow interests.
According to a statement by the Presidency on Sunday, the President spoke in an interview he granted a magazine, The Interview.
Buhari was said to be reacting to criticisms that he has no economic team.
During the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, private sector players such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola, Mr. Tony Elumelu, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and Mr. Atedo Peterside among others were members of the EMT.
But the President said he did not include private players in his team because such people do not work for the over-all national interest.
He said, “The Vice-President heads our Economic Management Team.
“You have Finance Minister, Budget and Planning Minister, Minister for Industry, Trade and Investments, Governor at the Central Bank, National Economic Adviser and others. Some still ask for a team. I don’t know how they define the word ‘team.’
“We will listen to everybody but we are averse to economic team whose private sector members frequently steer government policy to suit their own narrow interests rather than the over-all national interest.”
Buhari also said that one of the things on his priority list is to change the way things are done in Nigeria.
He said that was the only way that could lead the nation into a great future.
Buhari was also said to have expressed his desire to see a Nigeria where all funds are used to the benefit of the common man.
“My wish is that we will truly change the way we do things in Nigeria. Therein lies the future of our country as a great entity.
“I also wish for a fully diversified Nigerian economy which is no longer dependent on oil only and a Nigeria where every naira that comes into the treasury is used for the good of the people, particularly, the ordinary people,” the President said. https://www.today.ng/news/national/157448/excluded-private-sector-players-economic-team-buhari

This cant be from Uncle Femi,
he is sure too learned to utter such statements cos it soundas partisan.
If asuch actions are to be taken then every 2nd tunure state governor should be meted with same treatment cos i believe they are all guilty as charged
Johnnyessence:
Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the federal government to declare state of emergency in Ekiti State if Governor Ayodele Fayose refuses to resign.

Falana said: “Gov. Fayose should be stripped of the immunity he is currently enjoying by declaring state of emergency in Ekiti, then arrest him to face trial for corruption.”

He stated this during an interactive session with some selected students of Nigerian Law School in Abuja on Thursday 7 July, 2016.

It will be recall that some people suspected to be members and loyalists of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the state staged a protest demanding for the resignation of the governor following the corruption allegations leveled against him by the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The call for state of emergency in Ekiti and the arrest of Fayose will not come as a surprise to many, especially those people who accused Falana of partisanship and bias towards the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.http://vaxity.com/falana-fayose-6/

President to hold town hall meeting with US Diaspora Nigerians
Nduka Nwosu in Washington DC

With an official entourage of 33 including his son Yusuf, President Muhammadu Buhari arrives the Joint Base Andrews Airport, Washington DC Sunday to kick start his official visit to the United States.

Apart from getting a brief on the visit from Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US Professor Ade Adefuye and his team, Buhari will have a private dinner with Madeline Albright former US Secretary of State after settling down at the historic Blair House in Pennsylvania Avenue, the first time a visiting Nigerian leader would be so honoured.

The President who is billed to hold a Town Hall meeting with Nigerians in the Diaspora Tuesday will on Monday be officially welcomed at the White House starting with a breakfast meeting of five at the Naval Observatory, the official residence of the US Vice President Senator Joe Biden.

When THISDAY put a call to Adefuye on the expectations of the visit and what Nigeria stood to gain, he said the visit was strategic on many fronts because Nigeria and the US remain partners on many fronts.

According to him, the US recognises Nigeria as an emerging economic giant not just in Africa but in the global village adding this is the first time the US is inviting a newly elected African leader who has been in office for less than two months, to a state visit.

President Buhari, Adefuye said, “has what it takes to drive this emerging role of Nigeria and I am glad to receive him on this historic visit. The expectation that President Buhari will reposition the nation along the path of greatness is not misplaced.”

The importance of the visit to the US, Adefuye added, “is in the fact that the US is accommodating President Buhari at Blair House, the first of its kind for a Nigerian leader and at no expense to the country.”

Part of the high point of the visit is the long awaited lecture of Buhari at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on his last day in the US.

The institute had expected him to deliver a public lecture at the heat of the Presidential campaign in February. USIP Director of Programmes, Ms. Jennifer Cooke had envisaged an event that would attract a large audience of US policy makers, academics, business leaders, and Nigerians in the Diaspora, an expectation that has even become heightened with the President’s rising profile since his defeat of Goodluck Jonathan a sitting president and the first time this is happening in the political space of the country.

The interactive session jointly organised by USIP, National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute, Centre for Strategic Studies and the Atlantic Council will offer the President an opportunity to highlight on his policy direction and the expectations in the days ahead.

The Corporate Council for Africa (CCA) which also cancelled its lunch session with Buhari will along with the US Chamber of Commerce hold an interactive dinner with the president who would also have another media chat at the Blair House, later holding talks with Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Economic Assistance Programme for the North East and other important stakeholders on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

The Blair House breakfast meeting which is restricted to five people includes the President, his host Senator Biden, the Permanent. Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Governor of Borno State; Ambassador Ade Adefuye and Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers State.

The White House visit which is billed to last one hour will be followed by a media chat at the Pool Spray, a bilateral meeting with Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, US Trade Representative Michael Froman with Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and his Nassarawa State counterpart in attendance

Buhari will also hold talks on corruption with Loretta Lynch, US Attorney General with Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Permanent Secretary, MFA; Director General, Nigerian Intelligence Agency and the Solicitor General of the Federation in attendance
He would later hold talks on Strengthening the Nigerian Economy with Jack Lew, US Secretary of the Treasury, with the Governor of the Central Bank Godwin Emefiele Permanent Secretary, MFA and Director General of the Budget as part of his team.

Apart from receiving in audience the US Black Caucus in the House of Representatives, Buhari will be at the Capitol Hill the equivalent of the National Assembly holding sessions with the Senate and House committees on Foreign Affairs with lunch hosted by US Secretary of State, John Kerry with Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, his Oyo State counterpart Abiola Ajimobi, Permanent Secretary MFA, Ambassador Ade Adefuye, Director-General of NIA, Permanent Secretary Trade and Investment and businessman Ismaila Funtua

After his meeting with the US Director of the CIA, the President will be host of a courtesy call from his colleagues of the Class of 1980 of the US Army War College arriving at the Nigerian Embassy for the Town Hall Meeting as well as the Meet & Greet Session by Nigerian Youths in the US with Mo Abudu moderating while meeting later in the afternoon, a group of potential investors in the agricultural sector

On Buhari’s entourage are Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Adams Oshiomhole, Kashim Shettima, Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi, Godwin Emefiele, Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Hadi Sirika, Ambassador. Paul Bulus Z, Ambassador. Ayodele Oke, Alhaji. Aliyu Ismaila, Ambassador. A.A. Musa, Ambassador. G.B. Igali, Aliyu Yahaya Gusau, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Ismaila Isa Funtua, Mr. Femi Adesina and Dr. Suhayb Sanusi Rafindadi.

A non-governmental organization, Secure Aid Relief Foundation (SARF), says it will provide scholarships for the education of children of deceased or incapacitated officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Head of the organization, Mr Patrick Nwadiani , stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Yenagoa..
He said in addition to the scholarships, SARF intended providing legal and medical services, as well as soft loans and skill acquisition programme to empower them.
He said that the education of children of the diseased and incapacitated officers would be funded from primary to tertiary level through a scholarship foundation.
Nwadiani also said that the organisation was collaborating with some corporate organisation in a bid to providing employment slots to the employable and qualified children and spouses of the diceased and incapacitated officers.
On skill acquisitions, Nwadiani said that spouses of the fallen heroes would be empowered to fill the vacuum created by demise of their husbands.
“We have skill acquisition training for the wives of the deceased and incapacitated officers, who before the present condition of their husbands were mere house wives.
“Their husbands who used to be bread winners of the home are no more there. So, we are going to empower them through skills acquisition in various trades and crafts “.he said
According to Nwadiani , the NGO has also gone into partnership with a number of hospitals where the women and children will be given medical attention, either free or at subsidized cost.
The President further explained that the foundation had already attracted partnership and medical aids from reputable and prominent healthcare charity organisations in the United States.
“The foundation therefore calls on all members of the public to come out and support SARF.
“The organization is striving to reward the efforts of our national heroes who sacrificed their lives, as well as compliment the efforts of the government ,” Nwadiani said. (NAN)
