Politics / Air Peace Lagos-london Route Eases Pressure On Naira – Keyamo by Morbeta11(m): 6:47pm On Mar 30

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, has commended Air Peace for their Lagos-London route, which he said has helped to reduce the pressure on the Nigerian currency: the Naira as against the US Dollars.

Keyamo made the observation Friday night, during Air Peace’s inaugural flight ceremony held at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Air Peace on Friday, 29th March commenced its daily flight to Gatwick London with its Boeing 777 fully loaded with passengers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Keyamo said that the Tinubu-led government is going to ensure that they support local operators in accessing aircraft lease arrangements like what Air Peace is doing.

Keyamo pointed out that Nigeria had been on the blacklist when it comes to dry lease arrangements because of the previous experiences of the lessors.

He said, “Nigeria is on a blacklist to get these dry leases. That is part of what I have been undertaking since I came. I have been trying to assure the world and aircraft manufacturers, like Airbus, that we can protect their assets when they bring them into Nigeria. This is because what they want is whether we can allow them to take these assets when there are breaches of agreements”.

“The problem they always face is that when they bring their assets into the country, and there is a breach sometimes, because of court injunctions and local politics, they can no longer take their aircraft away. It is a huge loss to them. What they want is that they should be able to take these assets away when there is a breach. How do we do this? It is the government that will assure these creditors that please bring in your aircraft.”

Keyamo also noted that with Air Peace on the London route, there will be no problem with trapped funds, adding that the aviation company is a local company and that the government does not have to repatriate the sale of tickets to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

By doing so, the Minister stated that under such a situation, Nigeria would be liquid enough in terms of foreign exchange to repatriate those funds.

He said: “All the airlines that come into Nigeria, what they experience is massive repatriation of funds that puts pressure on the Naira because they have to seek for dollars, both the commercial banks and CBN. This new development eases the pressure on Naira because this is a Nigerian company that deals in naira and buys in naira. The only problem is that they still have to go abroad whenever they want to service their aircraft. So one of my major objectives is to bring the MRO into Nigeria. That is very important. The key to unlocking this industry is to ensure that MRO comes into the country as quickly as possible. The Chinese, Arabs, and Americans are talking to us. They all want to come and do something. For now, we have a choice because everybody wants to come in and invest in Nigeria because of the new approach of governance to investors.

On why airlines that operated the London route previously did not survive, the Minister said “The reason why previous airlines on the London Route did not survive is not because of the politics of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA). It is about access to aircraft on favourable terms. We are going to pray for Air Peace and pray for Allen that he can sustain this. This is because he is doing this at great expense, even at marginal profit or loss to challenge and it is going to get better”.

In his remark, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite commended the airline, emphasising that Air Peace’s presence in London is not merely about arrivals and departures but about trade, investment, and collaboration.

By choosing Air Peace, Dr Uzoma noted that such customers have chosen to invest in Nigeria, empower local businesses, create jobs, and strengthen our economy.

To our esteemed passengers, I say this: Your choice to fly with Air Peace is a vote of confidence. Air Peace has a commendable safety record, they hold a 7 out of 7 safety rating according to Airline Ratings and the airline has successfully undergone the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification four times, signifying its commitment to rigorous safety standards. So I entreat all potential passengers to trust them to carry you safely across continents, and remember that you are part of a movement—a movement that encourages Nigerians to patronize their own”, the Minister added.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman/CEO of Air Peace, Dr Allen Onyema said Air Peace’s foray into the Lagos-London route is a testimony that Nigeria can handle the route.

Dr Onyema said the Air Peace foray into the Lagos-London route has made a whole lot of changes in the Nigerian economy, saving the country billions of Naira.

” You saw what has happened in the last one week. An airline came out and brought all the International airlines to their knees by bringing down the fares where they were supposed to be. When it happened all the foreign airlines started scampering for cover and they all came down overnight within 24 hours from 15 million to N5 and economy from N5m to N1.8m, N1.9m. This event has saved this country billions of Naira in the last three weeks. It has also helped in improving the value of the Naira against the dollar. What happened was that these foreign airlines were taking N15m and charging exorbitantly and they had so much money in their hands.”

Explaining further, the airline operator added “They took so much money to go to the market to look for dollars, putting a strain on the Naira. Now that we have done this, people are paying what they are supposed to pay and there is less demand for dollars because fewer Naira now is chasing the dollars and the thing came down also. So Air Peace has contributed in bringing the dollar rates down apart from all the measures put in place by President Bola Tinubu. I thank the president and his team. We are being supported”.

In her remark, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku said FAAN is fully prepared for Air Peace’s operations in London, adding it has been a moment they have been waiting for.

“We are prepared. We have been waiting for this event for quite a while. It’s with great delight and pleasure to see Air Peace take off to London tonight. We have been working closely with the airline. As you can see, we have made provision for them in terms of necessary infrastructure. We got the checking counter available and we made sure we had the right security apparatus and of course that they had the right slots and landing aids. Again being one of our very own, we will continue to support them. We have to support Nigerians at crucial times.”

Politics / Italian Consortium, AGS Meets Gov Otti Over Investment In Abia by Morbeta11(m): 3:06pm On Mar 29

A European consortium based in Italy, Advanced Global Solution (AGS), is set to invest multi million dollars in the Nigeria economy.

The consortium is proposing to invest in renewable energy, plastic recycling, agriculture among other critical sectors in Abia State Nigeria which has of late, become a major industrial hub in the country.

President of the Consortium, Mr Attilio Bianchi, disclosed this during a strategic meeting with Governor Alex Otti of Abia State on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Addressing the Governor, Mr Bianchi said his consortium’s pursuit was in line with the vision of the Italian Government, and the European Union (EU), to mitigate the phenomenon of illegal migration from Africa by investing in African countries through a strategic plan called “Flex Town”.

Flex Town, according to him, is a research conducted by the consortium which has already been submitted to the Italian Government.

He said :”This plan will have positive effects on the micro-economies of some rural West African countries, support her economy and develop the manpower of the continent. In so doing, it will discourage internal immigration from the rural areas to the metropolitan urban areas, which is the main source of illegal migration from Africa.”

He noted that a special plan to skill the manpower and the local technician had been developed through the cooperation between the AGS Consortium and a local new Nigerian company, called NITA Engineering Ltd, based in Lagos.

Mr Bianchi stated that AGS Consortium was founded by five companies with the special scope of bringing constituents and other European companies to explore the various opportunities and also most importantly invest in Africa.

“In fact, within the first weeks of April 2024, with an expectation of at least 20 new companies the consortium will be open for subscription from some selected associated new companies, committed to investing in Nigeria, with expertise in waste/plastic recycling, mechanized agriculture, amongst others.”

Mr Bianchi also stated that he and his partners are willing to bring their expertise to partner with the government on areas of mutual interest, to develop projects and open new production companies based on the Nigeria territory, in conjunction with the NITA company in Lagos.

According to him, the capital required to sustain these investments can be provided directly by some of the investors, in partnership with local private or public entities, or through the possibility of exploring the availability of Italian and European public funds.

“The Italian Government is promoting new policies that will encourage investments in countries where illegal immigration originates, creating job opportunities and possible legal immigration, and inviting skilled workers from Nigeria who are prepared to work in foreign countries. The most important project that the Italian Government is promoting, is called “Piano Mattei” (Mattei Plan), where the “Flex Town” project can find a possible natural collocation.

“Of course, the guidelines of the “Piano Mattei” are related to the green philosophy of the investment, privileging the investment based on a sustainable environmental policy.”

Bianchi further asserted that an international Economic Forum had been scheduled for Lagos in September by the Italian Government.

“Most of my partners will be in Nigeria for the Forum and will be open to engage the Government of Abia State further,” he said.

He said the consortium would conduct a security analysis as well as feasibility study of the state.

“Naturally, before starting any kind of investment in Abia State, there is a need for an analysis of the local security conditions and how to set them.

Moreover, there is also a need to work on some feasibility plans in selected sectors or fields, privileging the water treatment sector, the agro-food sector, the waste plastic recycling chain, the renewable energies field, and some innovation sectors, like new breeding systems and greenhouse agricultural solutions.”

Responding, Governor Otti appreciated the consortium for finding Abia State worthy of investments.

He noted that there are things that support businesses and investments, such as infrastructure, security, and good government policies, assuring that his administration is committed towards providing the enablers.

Otti promised that under his watch, Abia would be a preferred destination for investors.

He said that: “Abia State is interested in mechanized farming, waste recycling, and renewable energy.”

The Governor assured the consortium of the readiness of his Government to partner “any organization/entity that will satisfactorily provide the services the state needs.”

Otti further assured the delegation of a conducive business environment and return on investment.

Meanwhile, both parties agreed to meet again while they studied the proposals and agreed on areas of common interest.

Mr Bianchi commended Lady Ucheoma Vanessa Ekeledo, an Abian, and the Minister in Charge of Rome Based International Organizzations in the Nigerian Embassy in Italy, for her instrumentality in facilitating the meeting.

Members of the delegation include Engr. Obinna Gerald Azike (Owner of Genoel Nig. Ent. & AGS Technical Consultant); Mr Habakuk Aboki (Chairman Benjaden & Bianchi Nig. LTD – AGS partner); and Ms. Nelly Nguvan Onwuegbuna, a lawyer.

Politics / Court Quashes Debe's Suit, Awards Ojukwu's Will To Bianca by Morbeta11(m): 2:48pm On Mar 29

The Enugu State High Court presided over by Justice A.O Onovo has thrown away for lack of merit, a suit initiated by the late Chief (Dr) Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu (who claimed to be the first son of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu) against Ikemba’s window, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu.

Debe had gone to court challenging the authenticity of Ikemba’s will, arguing that as the first son of the late Biafra leader, his name was supposed to be contained in the will which his name was not therein.

Debe further claimed that Ojukwu’s will was tampered with and sought from the court for an order restraining the defendant, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu from interfering with the administration of the estate of the late Ikemba, as well as a declaration that Ojukwu died without writing any will. He also claimed entitlement to letters of administration of the late Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s estate.

The Biafra leader, Ojukwu, died on November 26 2011. His wife, Bianca, who is the first defendant in the case, as well as Mr James Ezike, the second defendant, were named within Ojukwu’s will, as trustees and executors of his estate .

Debe brought the matter the court in 2013 challenging the validity of the late Ojukwu’s will, insisting that he was the first son of the deceased but was not mentioned or acknowledge in the will.

The issues determined by the court were: Whether the plaintiff had adduced enough evidence to establish that he was a son the deceased and had been acknowledged as such by the deceased in his lifetime; and whether the deceased’s will was properly and validly made, and were entitled to benefit from the estate of the deceased, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The plaintiff, Chief Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu died in 2018 while the matter was still pending in the court, but his two daughters, Nene Grace and Obianuju Sarah applied for substitution in the suit which, though challenged by counsel to the defendants, Messrs Emeka Onyemelukwe and Ngozi Abafor, was allowed by the court.

Delivering judgement on the matter which lasted for over two hours, on Wednesday, Justice Onovo held that from all the evidence presented before the court, the plaintiff was not able to prove that he was acknowledged by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in the course of his lifetime, as his biological son .

According to the Judge, “it is the prerogative of a man to recognize a child born out of wedlock as his child,” maintaining that acknowledgement of paternity could also be inferred from certain acts by a father towards a purported son, and were not evident in the instant case.

The plaintiff had averred that he had been recognized by groups, associations and other members of society as a son of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, but the Judge queried, “Can Public opinion be the sole basis of determining the paternity of a child born out of wedlock? I do not think so.”

The Plaintiff also challenged the validity of the will of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, citing some typographical errors and signatories, and seeking for a declaration that Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu died intestate.

The Court after examination of all the evidence presented before held that the will and codicil were properly and validly made, and valid in the eyes of the law.

On the right of the children of the Plaintiff to challenge Ojukwu’s will, the court held that “in order to have the locus to challenge the will they must first prove that they are the grandchildren of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and entitled to the benefits accruing therefrom.

“Since in the suit initiated by the plaintiff, their father, he was unable to prove himself to be a son of the Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, then on what basis would the children of the plaintiff be challenging the will of the latter?

“Having failed to prove this, they have no beneficiary interest through their father Chief (Dr) Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu, in the estate of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and there is therefore no merit to this case,” Justice Onovo declared.

Politics / Rename Minna Airport Again by Morbeta11(m): 9:20pm On Mar 28

In a move widely criticised in both Niger State and the country in general, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago renamed the Dr. Abubakar Imam Kagara International Airport, Minna, to Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna. The airport was named after the author, in June last year, in recognition of his scholarly works in the Hausa language. In renaming the airport, Governor Bago simultaneously approved the naming of the state polytechnic in Zungeru, after Dr Imam, which he said was more appropriate, describing it as “Square peg in square hole’’.

On the renaming of the airport after President Tinubu, just less than a year after it was named after Dr Imam, Governor Bago said, “It is in appreciation of the president, for approving Niger State as the first special Airport Agro-Processing Free Zone in Nigeria and his immense contributions to nation building’’. The governor further said, “The state government under my leadership has been enjoying tremendous support from the Tinubu-led government and the president is an astute politician and a great leader that should be celebrated’’.

By all accounts this gesture of Governor Bago, though well-intentioned, is fraught with issues that call into question the appropriateness of the decision. First of all, Governor Bago has been in office for less than a year, during which he has had to cope with the myriad of issues that confront the state, ranging from insecurity, infrastructure deficit, wide spread hunger to poverty among others. These issues are weighty enough to occupy his time that renaming an airport should not be a priority.

Secondly, the airport in question is federal government-owned and does not lie within the purview of the state government. The governor overstepped his official jurisdiction in taking such an action on a matter that has already been gazetted by the appropriate authorities – the Federal Government of Nigeria. The procedure would have been for the federal government to de-gazette the naming of the airport in Dr Imam’s honour and transfer its rights to the airport to the Niger State government.

Governor Bago’s apparent compensation for Dr Imam, in naming the state polytechnic in Zungeru after him and his reference to the move as a “square peg in a square hole’’ misses the whole point about the credentials and contributions of Dr Imam. Although, he hailed originally from Niger State, the life and times of Dr Imam and his works transcend Niger State and even beyond Nigeria. His literary works; Magana Jari Ce and Ruwan Bagaja, are acknowledged as among the greatest works in Hausa language and literature which have been adapted into radio and television series. Dr Imam is rightly regarded by many as the Hausa language’s equivalent of William Shakespeare in the English language.

In the pantheon of writers, Dr Imam carved a niche as a literary giant and a great cultural icon. He was the first chief executive of the Northern Nigeria Publishing Corporation and was also the pioneer editor of Gaskiya ta fi Kwabo, the first Hausa language newspaper in Nigeria.

Naming a federal airport after him in recognition of his seminal works in the advancement of literature in Nigeria and beyond was indeed appropriate. We believe that Governor Bago took political correctness too far. We do not consider President Tinubu’s approval of the Minna Airport as the first agro-processing airport free zone or the president’s standing as an “astute politician’’ enough reasons to warrant the renaming of the airport from Dr Imam to President Bola Tinubu. Both are national icons in their own rights who have made their marks in their chosen fields of endeavour.

In any case, there was really no need for the action. Not everything should be politicized. The president was in Niger State to launch laudable projects, for which we commend the governor. Whether he renamed the airport or not would not have taken anything from that event. All said, we believe that Governor Bago’s decision to rename the Minna Airport from Abubakar Imam International Airport to Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport does not meet the conditions of propriety and procedure, fairness, recognition and timing.

Accordingly, we call on the federal government, in conjunction with the Niger State government to reverse the action and rename the airport again. Dr Bago is barely one year into his tenure as governor, we believe there is ample time for him to execute projects, out of which one could be named after the president. Furthermore, there is a need to review the act of naming institutions after officials who are still in office. We advise that going forward, such honour should be reserved for persons who have completed their terms and left office. That way, Nigerians will be able to see clearly what the person being honoured has done and if indeed he/she merits it. For now, Dr Bago, reverse the action.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has vowed that Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar will be captured dead or alive

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has vowed that Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar will be captured dead or alive.

Mr Herzog sees the Hamas leader as the lynchpin in the Gaza war and key to getting Israel’s hostages held in the Gaza Strip released.

“In the end, there is no choice,” Mr Herzog said in Jerusalem on Tuesday. “We must continue the fight and we must get to Sinwar – either alive or dead – so that we can see the hostages back home.”

Mr Herzog added that the reality is clear, saying, “Everything begins and ends with Yehya Sinwar. He’s the one who decided on the October massacre.”

He added, “He’s been seeking to shed the blood of the innocent ever since.

“It is he who aims to escalate the regional situation, to desecrate Ramadan, to do everything to shatter coexistence in our country and in the whole region, to sow discord among us and around the world.”

Politics / Terror Financing: Indicted Publisher Threatens To Sue FG by Morbeta11(m): 1:32pm On Mar 27

The publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald Newspaper, Tukur Mamu, has written to the Attorney General of the Federation, demanding a retraction of his profiling and designation as a terrorist financier.

This was contained in a letter dated March 25, 2024, written on his behalf by his lawyer, J.J. Usman (SAN), addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation which acknowledged copy was sighted by our correspondent in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The PUNCH reports that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, last week released a document designating 15 entities, including nine individuals and six Bureau De Change operators and firms, as terrorism financiers.

The NFIU document was titled “Designation of Individuals and Entities for March 18, 2024.”

In the document, the NFIU named Mamu among the terrorism financiers, referencing his alleged role in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.

According to the document, Mamu “participated in the financing of terrorism by receiving and delivering ransom payments over the sum of $200,000 US in support of ISWAP terrorists for the release of hostages of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.”

As of July 2022, Mamu, who is now in detention, was Media Consultant to the controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

Last week, Gumi also faulted Mamu’s designation by the NFIU as a terrorism financier.

On Monday, the Federal Government warned Gumi against what it described as reckless statements, threatening that the Islamic cleric could be arrested.

Mamu’s counsel, in his letter to the AGF, contented that the “Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacks the statutory mandate to pronounce on, and to designate Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu as a Terrorist Financier.”

Consequently, according to the letter, the AGF was given a seven-day ultimatum to retract Mamu’s designation as a terrorism financier.

The lawyer questioned why the Federal Government would rush to designate Mamu as a terrorism financier when the criminal case filed against him by the AGF was still in court.

He said it was “lamentable that while the case was still pending in court, the social media was saturated by a publication allegedly emanating from and authorised by your good office.”

“As at the time of this missive, no court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria has designated our client as such.

“It is common knowledge that the administration of the criminal justice system in Nigeria is not only antithetic to but also forbids media trial in whatever guise.

“We vehemently condemn the actions of the Nigerian Sanctions Committee same being a violation of the rule of natural justice and prejudicial to our client, who is undergoing trial, and whose trial is still pending in Suit No: FHCIABJ/CR/96/2023

“The Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacks the statutory mandate to pronounce on, and to designate Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu as a terrorist financier; even when it is a notorious fact that Mr. Tukur Mohammed Mamu is undergoing trial. It is so, particularly that the court has not made any pronouncement detailing him to be one.

“On the basis of the aforesaid, we demand in very clear and unequivocal terms: the immediate retraction of the said publication within seven days from the receipt of this letter dated 25th March 2024.

“Failure to comply with our client’s demand, we will have no hesitation in seeking redress in the Court of law for the ventilation of our client’s grievances.”

Politics / Bithday Greetings: Tinubu To Appologise To Newspappers For Revenue Loss by Morbeta11(m): 6:56am On Mar 27

President Bola Tinubu said he would apologise to newspaper organisations for denying them the opportunity to generate revenue through celebratory advertorials on his 72nd birthday, which comes this Friday, March 29.

He admitted that his choice might have hurt newspapers.

The president explained his decision to forego an elaborate celebration or word of congratulations on his 72nd birthday in a statement that was released on X (previously known as Twitter) by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to him, the ceremony will not align with the current mood in the country.

“Besides, he didn’t want government agencies to use public money to place congratulatory adverts for him.

“He restated that he would rather want well-wishers to give the money to orphanages or old people’s homes.

“He acknowledged that newspapers who were expecting to make money may have been hurt. “I know they will be angry with me. But I will apologize to them later.” the statement reads.

Tinubu had in a statement issued by Onanuga on Sunday appealed to his family, friends, associates, and well-wishers not to host elaborate events on his birthday anniversary.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will turn 72 on Friday, March 29, 2024. The day will be another important milestone in his life as a leader and a statesman.

“During an auspicious occasion as this, it is customary for family members, friends, and associates to celebrate him in different ways.

“As the leader of our country, President Tinubu, in deference to these challenging times, will not host any birthday event and does not want any of his associates and numerous well-wishers across the country to organise any celebratory event on his behalf or in his name.

“President Tinubu appreciates the honour of being the leader of Africa’s leading nation at this time and he is working very hard to make life better for the generality of our people.

“According to him, because of the present mood of the nation and the recent killing of the officers and men of our army and police in Delta State and the recent spate of security breaches by criminal elements in different parts of Nigeria, there should be no form of birthday event and placing of birthday goodwill advertorial messages in newspapers. Goodwill messages should not be placed on radio and television stations either.

“President Tinubu enjoins friends and associates who may wish to place goodwill advertorials to kindly donate the money to charity organisations of their choice in his name.

“Although the President appreciates the gallantry of our Armed Forces in freeing our children kidnapped in Kuriga, Kaduna State, and in Sokoto State, he will use the opportunity of his birthday to reflect and re-dedicate himself to the task of building a more stable, more secure, virile, prosperous and united Nigeria.”

“Until his escape, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities and served as Binance’s Africa Regional Manager, was being tried by Nigerian courts.

“The suspect escaped while under a 14-day remand order by a court in Nigeria. He was scheduled to appear before the court again

Where are those naysayers and unpatriotic elements saying he will not get a red notice?
He is done for! Fugitive on the run. He was first unfortunate to work for a criminal organisation involved in money laundering and financing terrorism now unfortunate to become a fugitive on the run and on interpol list.

Mallam Ribadu will smoke him out and squeeze those involved until they sing like canary.
May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!
