i dont blame PDP or any party... I blame the system we have in Nigeria and until this system is fixed no political party can fix anything.. I fear for our Nigeria until i see a group that is asking for the system to be first collapsed and then rebuilt and not just a group that wants her own share of the default system.. |
this is long but a lovely piece, i encourage you all to read For the purpose of this piece, the average Nigerian politician will be considered a male. That should not in any way be taken to mean that there are no female Nigerian politicians that fit into the picture the following words will paint of the average Nigerian politician. The average Nigerian politician loves Nigeria deeply and will stand for the country when push comes to shove but whatever happens, don’t let shove come to him choosing between his interest and that of Nigeria. For the average Nigerian politician, the only time Nigeria gets relegated on his ladder of love is when he has to choose between Nigeria’s interest and his. Unfortunately, this clash of interest between the 160 million people of Nigeria and solitary interest of one man happens every other day. Thousands may die because he wants power or because he wants to retain power, it is okay if he gets power or if he retains it. Have you not seen them curse and abuse the government in power, describe how their party, the main opposition, will rescue the nation from the shackles of those in power? Have you not read their stories and heard their speeches where if you weren’t a Nigerian yourself who pays attention to the issues in the country, you would think those they accused of being behind Nigeria’s woes are solely responsible for the same. One switch, one decision and they reverse their every word. As soon as they switch parties, they want us to believe the demons they cursed only yesterday have actually always been angels and the angels they dined with only days before have actually always been murderers. The average Nigerian politician has no sense of shame, no badge of honour, just a chance to stay connected to power or a chance to stay where those in power continue to notice them for good or for evil. They are the ones who today tell us the All Progressives Congress is the coming messiah the holy books spoke about and within weeks want us to believe the Peoples Democratic Party is the chariot upon which Nigeria’s destiny to greatness lies. The annoying part, they want us to believe their every word, even when we are all witnesses to their public equivocation. Unfortunately, they are in every party. The average Nigerian politician sees Nigerians only through two possible hues: those they consider being for them, that is, those they know will trumpet their fame and goodness irrespective of the evil they mete out to the people. The other colour of people they see are those they consider enemies, and it doesn’t matter that these so-called enemies demand of them one thing only: do better for our country, be about our country. The average Nigerian politician is unruly, with a seeming genetic lack of chivalry and decorum but that state of mind is not genetic, you should come see them walk the streets of New York or in a queue to buy grocery somewhere in London. There, they fall in line, maybe, because they know the language of “do you know who I am?” and “can’t you see I am old enough to be your grandfather?” are not universal languages. They comport themselves like children who know the sting of a whip and see it dangling before their eyes. Give him credit, though, the average Nigerian politician knows what to do. They know what Nigeria needs. They have houses in Dubai where no one screams “Up NEPA!” because power has been restored to last a few minutes after the same had been out for days. They have children in world-class schools abroad so they know incessant closures of schools are not the norm. They travel through public transport abroad so they know public transport does not have to be unsafe, unkempt and dangerous as they have made it at home. They visit other countries and they know it is an anomaly for the private jet terminal of a country to always have more functional planes than the commercial terminal. These average Nigerian politicians know the beauty of making most of the people wealthy; they know the essence of a population with a respectable disposable income. They know one can be rich and still remain rich despite not having too many poor people around one. The challenge they have with making things work at home is that, home is the only place where their oversized egos get to be worshipped, just for having more money in the bank and more access to power. The average Nigerian politician finds his self-worth in the gross poverty of the people. The average Nigerian politician understands his wealth only in terms of the poverty he sees around him. If he doesn’t see as many poor people as possible in need of his benevolence, he doesn’t see the sense in his wealth. The average Nigerian politician believes everyone else is responsible for the mess Nigeria is in today, everyone else but him. It does not matter whether or not he can explain his own wealth. Somehow, ask for how he made his money? You will get a classic subconscious answer, “We thank God!” Do not expect that to be followed by a believable story of how his wealth came about. The story begins and ends with a reference to a God they believe in, only as long as he does not arrest them for being perpetrators of evil. The average Nigerian politician is so rich the wealth has no known source. Okay, it does have a source but we know they are all supposed to pretend we don’t know it is stolen public wealth. We pretend and even celebrate these privileged thieves because deep down within the average Nigerian, he wants to become just like the average Nigerian politician. That should not even be a desire because, of a truth, the average Nigerian politician is only different from the average Nigerian in that one is already with the power and the means to make life difficult to most Nigerians, while the other still has limitations with respect to how many people his ways affect. Do not forget, it is not the average Nigerian politician that treats his security man as though he is only but another part of a lifeless gate; that is the job of the average Nigerian. Do not forget, the average Nigerian politician is not responsible for the looting of the estate’s monthly contributions; that job belongs to the average Nigerian with the power to manage an estate. It is the average Nigerian who gets an order to pay staff salaries but holds out a few months to make some money off the interest. You cannot judge the average Nigerian politician without placing the mirror before the average Nigerian. Away from the mirror, one looks richer than the other, one looks like the oppressor of the other but in the mirror, they are one and the same. They are the average Nigerians who see Nigeria only as an opportunity to make only their own lives better. It does not matter who is dying of terrorism elsewhere, they are fine where they are, so Nigeria is fine. It does not matter how much a politician steals, except he is not of their own ethnic group or he is not a friend to their uncle’s friend. We are all jokers in this country; we think we want a better country for all of us, when of a truth, we just want a chance to make only our own lives better. When the desire for a better country becomes collective, we will get that country when we deserve it. Omojuwa is a social media entrepreneur and political commentator. @omojuwa Copyright PUNCH. The Peoples Democratic Party may have started offering ‘re-election tickets’ to its members in the National Assembly as a means of dissuading them from supporting the reported drive by the All Progressives Congress lawmakers to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan. In the House of Representatives in particular, the bait was said to have “toned down” the anger of some PDP members, who ordinarily would have backed the bid to remove Jonathan. An influential National Assembly source said on Sunday that “many of these lawmakers have long fallen apart with their state governors. “They have been told before now that they should forget any ambition to return in 2015. “Attempts they made to use the Presidency to intervene in their case also did not turn out in their favour. “But, with the impeachment move against Jonathan, the party is now assuring some of the members to keep supporting the President as the tickets can still be theirs.” About 113 lawmakers, largely of the APC fold, began collecting signatures to impeach Jonathan after the police and Department of State Service operatives locked the gates of the National Assembly on Thursday. Many of them, including the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, were held out for hours as a result of the security action. The development led to commotion as angry members resorted to scaling the gates to enter the National Assembly premises. Amidst a rain of tear-gas, the enraged lawmakers also forcibly took Tambuwal into the chambers to preside over the day’s proceedings. The security action was said to be connected with the October 28 defection of Tambuwal from the PDP to the APC. However, the police claimed that they acted on a security report indicating that some persons planned to invade the National Assembly. Investigations showed on Sunday that the PDP immediately started reaching out to its members after it turned out that the collection of signatures was real. The party was said to be mobilising the PDP caucus against joining their APC colleagues in any bid to impeach Jonathan. A senior PDP member, Mr. Bethel Amadi, confirmed to The PUNCH that the caucus would be mobilised to stop any impeachment move against Jonathan. Amadi said, “Jonathan has not committed any offence to the best of our knowledge. There is no reason to drag Mr. President into any crisis happening at the National Assembly. “In any case, we (PDP) are in the majority, both in the Senate and the House. So, any talk of impeachment can only make one laugh.” But, The PUNCH gathered that the PDP was wooing Senators and House members with the return tickets to keep them in check. Another source said, “You know that to impeach the President there must be a joint effort of the Senate and the House. “While one arm can initiate the process, it cannot get far without two-thirds support of both chambers. “That is why, getting senators and House members to stay out of the APC’s plot is vital.” Findings also showed that the ‘return tickets bait’ was the reason some PDP legislators were still not showing strong interest in the impeachment move. It was learnt that by the first week of December when the picture would have become clear on whether they would get return tickets or not, the PDP lawmakers “will begin to come out in their true colours.” A third source, who spoke with our correspondent in Abuja said, “After the primaries, you will see surprises. Many PDP members in the House are as angry as their APC colleagues. “They have only two weeks to decide on many issues. “By December, those saying that there will be no two-thirds will be surprised.” When contacted, the APC caucus told our correspondent that its members were not retreating on the issue. One of the front-liners in the collection of signatures, Mr. Ahmad Ali, claimed that more members had signed up since the first set of 113 began on Thursday. Ali, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Justice, said,”In the House, the collection of signatures is gaining traction. “I cannot tell you the exact number now.” House Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, also said that the “impeachment is on course.” “PDP people have plans, we have plans. We are all planning,” he said. Copyright PUNCH. All rights reserved. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or against a person who is incapable of valid consent," Sir marital status doesn't shield you from rape key word remains consent.. |
