Prophet Abraham (AS) And The “Kafir”

Long, long before, in the land known as Palestine there lived a very Great Prophet of God. He has been chosen by God to teach people religion, good thoughts and good deeds. The name of this great prophet was Abraham (AS). The Muslims know him as Prophet Ibrahim (AS). He was the ancestor of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Abraham (AS) was very fond of guests. He liked to invite guests to his house. He was good to travelers. Even the Quran speaks of his kind generosity and hospitality.

Every morning Abraham stood by the main road near his house and waited for travelers to pass. As soon he saw them he would invited them to his house to be his guests. It pleased him to make other people happy and comfortable. Thus, Abraham would everyday bring home one guest at least. If no traveler passed for a day, he would be unhappy for not being able to serve and without having a guest, he would not touch food himself.

Once it so happened that no traveler passed that way for three days in a row. This, naturally, upset Abraham and made him sad. Without having a guest on his table he could not eat. Each morning Abraham went to the main road hopefully. He’d strain his eyes far away to the horizon. Yet no traveler was to be seen. Each evening he would return to his home disappointed.

Three days passed. One morning an old man appeared on a camel. Abraham was happy. He invited the old man to his home to eat with him The old man accepted the invitation.

In the house they set to eat. Abraham recited "Bismillah" (In the name of God) before taking the food, but the old man did not say anything. Abraham asked why he did not remember God before taking his meal. Was not God our Creator, our Nourisher and our Master? Was it not proper to remember Him and thank Him before partaking of the food provided by Him?

The old man said that it was not the custom in his religion. Abraham asked him what his religion was. He said that he was one of those who worship fire.

Abraham was very much annoyed and turned the old man out without feeding him.

As soon as the old man went away, the archangel Gabriel came to Abraham, from God. Gabriel told Abraham that God had been feeding this unbeliever “Kafir” person for seventy years. Abraham could not tolerate him for even one meal? Abraham realized what he had done and felt very sorry for this. He immediately ran after the old man. Finally he reached him and persuaded him to return to his house to have food together. He finally succeeded in getting the old man to his home.

Satere-Mawe Bullet Ant Gloves

I'm sure you've heard tales of tribes, secret societies and fraternities that have strange, humiliating and sometimes painful initiation ceremonies. Well, for years the Satere-Mawe tribe of the Amazon rainforest have been looking down at such rituals and thinking "that's cute". Because no other society, tribe or civilisation has as painful an initiation or coming of age ritual as these guys.

When a young boy comes of age in the Satere-Mawe tribe, before he can become a man in the eyes of his fellow tribesmen and women, he must prove himself. To do that he must insert both his hands into specially made gloves containing an angry hive of the most painful stinging animal on earth, the bullet ant. This little deviant's sting is 30 times worse than a bee sting, in fact they are called bullet ants because the pain of their sting is said to be similar to a bullet hitting your flesh.

Justin Schmidt, an expert on insect stings, and author of the 'Schmidt sting pain index', ranked the sting of the bullet ant as the most painful in the world. Schmidt described the pain as "Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail in your heel." Just imagine that for a second - ouch. Now imagine sticking your hands into gloves filled with hundreds of these little devils whilst they repeatedly sting you for 10 minutes.

But apparently even that's not man enough for the chiefs of the Satere-Mawe tribe, the poor boy has to repeat this agonising ritual 20 times, over the course of an entire day, before he is truly considered a man. Never mind a "man", anyone who can withstand that deserves to be king of the bloody Amazon in my opinion.

Next we go to Japan. Come on you knew the Japanese were going to be somewhere on this list. Specifically to Kawasaki, where, on the first Sunday of April, every year, the locals host a Penis Festival. Known to the Japanese as Kanamara Matsuri.

This festival is meant to celebrate fertility and the power of the penis. The festival started in 1977 and was relatively small but it has enlarged significantly in popularity in recent years, and has become somewhat of a tourist attraction. During the event there are a whole range of phallic activities to participate in, you can make penis candles, enjoy a penis shaped lollipop, try your hand at carving a penis out of a radish, or just pose with a giant penis on your head.

The highlight of the festival is a parade in which a giant pink penis known as "Elizabeth" is carried around the streets by trans-gender and cross-dressing Japanese festival participants. Of course there's plenty of penis related merchandise available to purchase as well. It may look silly but it's all for a good cause. As well as its symbolic meanings, in recent years all the proceeds from the festival have been donated to HIV research.

Remember that person you had a crush on in school, whom you dreamt of eloping with? Well Romani gypsies do more than just dream about it, if they like a girl they simply take her. It's a very old and highly illegal tradition known as "bride kidnapping" and it's practiced frequently in Romani communities all around the world, where it is seen as completely normal and acceptable, even by today's standards.

Basically the rules are as so, if a man likes the look of a woman, even if he has never met her before, he can forcibly kidnap her. If he can then keep her by his side for three days without her escaping, she officially become his wife, at least in the eyes of the Romani community.

This practice is more formally known as "marriage by abduction". The practice is also carried out by some tribes in Central Asia and Africa. But surely the bride and her family don't approve of this new union between woman and her possibly psychopathic new husband who just subdued her with chloroform only three days earlier?

Well, since the tradition is so deeply imbued within the community the bride and her family usually accept her new fate and she simply has to learn to love her new partner. Kidnapping is 100% illegal but most governments never prosecute individuals for bride kidnapping because it is a cultural tradition of an ethnic minority, and outlawing cultural traditions is not an easy thing to do and often results in somewhat of a PR nightmare.

Most traditions have a purpose to them, some kind of hidden meaning. Not this one, I present to you the world's most pointless tradition, La Tomatina, an annual Tomato fight in the Valencian town of Buñol in Spain.

On the last Wednesday of August every year, a huge crowd gather's in the town, and then comes the most bizarre initiation ceremony to ever begin a food fight. A huge greased up pole is erected with a ham on top. The tomato fight doesn't officially begin until someone is able to climb to the top of the pole and knock the ham off. You couldn't even make this stuff up.

Once the ham is dislodged from it's greasy pole all hell breaks loose and the contestants lob tomatoes at each other whilst spectators shower them with water from hoses. But how did this sheer lunacy originate?

The story goes that in 1945, a group of young people went to a parade in the town and were so excited that they knocked a parade participant off their float. The participant was so enraged that they went to a nearby vegetable stall and threw tomatoes at everyone in a fit of rage.

Chaos ensued and eventually the police had to break up this mass vegetable fight. But they enjoyed it so much that they returned on the same date the following year and once again had a food fight of epic proportions. So yeah, there really isn't any point to it, but who cares it looks like fun.

Baby Tossing

For the past 500 years Indians have been chucking babies off the top of 15 metre high temples, in a ritual known as baby tossing or baby throwing. But don't worry they're not complete psychopaths, the baby is caught at the bottom in a large cloth. Okay it's still insane, but there is some method behind the madness. The ritual is believed to bring luck, prosperity and health to the new born baby.

Most babies are under two years old when they undergo this barbaric treatment. The ceremony starts with the new born baby's parents saying a prayer at the temple. A large crowd then gather's and a priest, stood at the top of the temple, shakes the baby before throwing them onto the cloth below. The crowd then cheers and the baby is passed around before being returned to the parents. Child's rights campaigners have been trying to get this tradition banned for years.

Walking With the Dead

Funerals can be expensive and families don't always have the funds available to pay for a burial when a loved one passes away. So what do you do? Well the Toraja people of Indonesia have a very unique way of dealing with this. If they can't afford a burial, the corpse is instead dressed in garbs and placed in a temporary coffin inside the family's house.

The family lives with their dead relative until they can save up enough money for a proper burial. When this time comes do they simply pick up the coffin and carry it to it's new resting place? Oh no! That's no fun. They instead raise the corpse from it's temporary coffin and ceremoniously walk the cadaver to it's final resting place, which could be miles away. Giving a whole knew meaning to life after death.

Finger Cutting

The Dani tribe, also from Indonesia, have a less disturbing but more gruesome way of dealing with the death of a loved one, they amputate their fingers. Or get one of their family members to amputate it for them.

When a loved one passes away, relatives of the dead cut the upper part of their finger or sometimes multiple fingers off. This is meant to be a physical manifestation of the emotional pain that the mourner is feeling. It is their way of showing their grief for the deceased.

The amputation is done by first tying a piece of string tightly around the finger for 30 minutes, to halt the flow of blood. A relative of the mourner then snips the top half of the finger, or fingers, off. The new ends of the amputee's fingers are then burnt in a fire to create scar tissue and prevent infections.

It is usually the women in the tribe, more so than the men, who undergo this barbaric treatment. I bet the mother's in the tribe are extra careful not to ever lose sight of their children, because if anything unfortunate does happen to them, daddy's going to cut mummy's fingers off. The practice has been banned in recent years, nevertheless it still goes on.

Carrying the Bride Over Hot Coals

The Chinese have a peculiar wedding custom. Before a newly wed couple can cross the threshold of their new home for the first time, the husband must carry his wife, on his back, over a smouldering bed of hot coals. This ritual is meant to ensure that the wife will have an easy and successful labor.

Drinking the Ashes of the Dead

Next up I'm afraid is another macabre death ritual. The Yanomamo tribe of Venezuela and Brazil believe that burying a body after death and leaving them to decay is a truly horrifying prospect. So corpses are cremated as quickly as possible after death. Okay that all seems pretty normal! Well I'm afraid this is where things get weird.

The tribe believe that by ingesting the remains of a loved one, their spirit will live within them forever. Yes I did just say "ingest" - that's right the Yanomamo tribe consume the ashes of their dead relatives. After cremation, the corpse's ashes and bones are crushed into a powder and mixed into a plantain soup. Chowder anyone? The ash and bone soup is then shared around the tribe and eaten. Yum!

Man Down

Obviously. It's no secret that the Russian's love vodka. Former Russian leader Peter the Great who reigned in the 1700s used to greet every foreign diplomat with a 1.5 liter jug of vodka and required that the diplomat finish the entire thing to prove their trustworthiness.

So it will come as no surprise that the Russian's have their own traditional drinking game, that involves - you guessed it! Lots and lots of vodka. The game is simply called "Man Down" and participants must stand in a circle each wielding a bottle of vodka. The goal is simple, keep drinking until someone falls over or passes out - and you must drink! Refusing to drink is considered an insult. Sounds like a super fun way to get alcohol poisoning!

Vesna Vulovic: The Stewardess Who Survived a terrorist attack at 33,000 feet

On January 26, 1972, a Yugoslav Airlines DC-9 departed from Copenhagen for Belgrade (via Zagreb) with 28 passengers and crew. At an altitude of 33,000 feet, a bomb in the cargo section, planted by the Ustashe Croatian separatist group, exploded. The plane disintegrated and crashed on the mountains.

In what must be one of the greatest survival stories of all time, stewardess Vesna Vulovic survived the 33,000 foot descent sitting on the tail of the plane.

22 year old Vulovic wasn't even supposed to be on that plane. As she later stated in an interview, it was another Vesna who was supposed to be on that flight, but she was happy with the mix-up as it allowed her to make her first trip to Denmark. She ended up with a fractured skull, two broken legs, and three broken vertebrae - one of which was crushed and left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Vulovic spent several months in and out of hospitals; operations allowed her to walk again. She became a celebrity when the Guinness Book of World Records invited her to a ceremony in London with Paul McCartney. She is listed for surviving the longest fall without a parachute. Vulovic is now a national hero in Serbia and spent the late 90s marching in Belgrade against Slobodan Milosovic.

Frane Selak: Escaped from a derailed train, a door-less plane, a bus crash, a car into flames, another 2 car accidents... then won Million Dollar lottery!

Luck has always been on his side or vice versa for croatian music teacher Frane Selak (born in 1929), who is well known around the world for as many fatal accidents as spectacular escapes. The first of his numerous near-death experiences began on a cold January day in 1962, when Selak was on a train to Dubrovnik: it suddenly derailed into an icy river, killing 17 passengers. He managed to escape with a broken arm, minor scratches and bruises.

A year later, Selak was flying, from Zagreb to Rijeka, when a door abruptly blew away from the cockpit of the plane, as he was blown off the plane. The accident killed 19 people, however, Selak was lucky enough to land on a haystack, and wake up some days later in hospital, with minor injuries.

It was in 1966 that he met with the third misadventure while traveling on a bus that crashed and plunged into a river. There were four people dead. Astonishingly, Selak managed to escape unharmed again.

In 1970, Selak was driving along when, all of a sudden, his car caught fire. He was fortunate again to have left the car before the fuel tank exploded. Three years later, another of Selak’s car caught fire, blowing flames through the air vents. To a greater dismay, Selak's lost most of his hair.

In 1995, Selak was in Zagreb when he was hit by a bus, again leaving nothing but a few injuries. The following year, while driving through a mountain road, Selak drove off a guardrail to escape an oncoming truck and landed on a tree to watch his car explode 300 feet below.

In a surprising turn of events in 2003, Selak won the million-dollar Croatian lottery, turning the man into either the world’s unluckiest man, or the world’s luckiest one.

Andes Survivors: Crashed on the Andes Mountains, lasted 72 days

On Friday the 13th of October, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force twin turboprop Fairchild FH-227D was flying over the Andes carrying Stella Maris College's "Old Christians" rugby union team from Montevideo, Uruguay, to play a match in Santiago, Chile. When the plane was flying through the pass in the mountains, the pilot notified air controllers in Santiago that he was over Curicó, Chile, and was cleared to descend. This would prove to be a fatal error. Since the pass was covered by the clouds, the pilots had to rely on the usual time required to cross the pass (dead reckoning). However, they failed to take into account strong headwinds that ultimately slowed the plane and increased the time required to complete the crossing. As a result, the turn and descent was initiated too soon, before the plane had passed through the mountains. Dipping into the cloud cover while still over the mountains, the Fairchild soon crashed on an unnamed peak (later called Glacier of Tears), located between Chile and Argentina.

Twelve people died in the crash. Survivors not only had to withstand the hunger and the fearful Mountains, but also 30 degree-below-zero temperatures during the night. They tried to survive with the scarce food reserves they had until being rescued, but they lost their hope when heard that the search had ceased on the radio. Desperate owing to the lack of food and physically exhausted, they were forced to feed themselves on their death partners to keep on living. Finally fed up with the extremely low temperatures and the avalanche threats, as well as anguished by the continuos deaths of their partners and the bad rescue prospects, two of them decided to cross the huge mountains to reach Chile. On 22nd of December of 1972, after being isolated for 72 days, the World found out and knew there were 16 survivors that beat Death in the Andes mountains.

Anatoli Bugorski: The Man Who Survived a Beam from a Particle Accelerator

As a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, Bugorski used to work with the largest Soviet particle accelerator, the Synchrotron U-70. On July 13, 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment when an accident occurred due to failed safety mechanisms. Bugorski was leaning over the piece of equipment when he stuck his head in the part through which the proton beam was running. Reportedly, he saw a flash “brighter than a thousand suns”, but did not feel any pain. The beam measured about 200,000 rads when it entered Bugorski’s skull, and about 300,000 rads when it exited after colliding with the inside of his head.

The left half of Bugorski’s face swelled up beyond recognition, and over the next several days started peeling off, showing the path that the proton beam (moving near the speed of light) had burned through parts of his face, his bone, and the brain tissue underneath. As it was believed that about 500 to 600 rads is enough to kill a person, Bugorski was taken to a clinic in Moscow where the doctors could observe his expected demise. However, Bugorski survived and even completed his Ph.D.. There was virtually no damage to his intellectual capacity, but the fatigue of mental work increased markedly. Bugroski completely lost hearing in the left ear and only a constant, unpleasant internal noise remained. The left half of his face was frozen, due to the destruction of nerves, and does not age. He is able to function perfectly well, save the fact that he has occasional petit mal seizures and very occasional grand mal seizures.

Roy Sullivan: Struck by Lightning 7 Times

Roy Sullivan was a Virginia Forest Ranger who had an incredible attraction to lightning... or rather lightning had an attraction to him. Over his 36-year career as a ranger, Sullivan was struck by lightning seven times - and survived each jolt, but not unscathed. His seventh strike put him in the Guinness Book of World Records:
In 1942, the first lightning strike shot through Sullivan's leg and knocked his big toenail off.
In 1969, a second strike burned off his eyebrows and knocked him unconscious.
In 1970, another strike left his shoulder seared.
In 1972, his hair was set on fire and Roy had to dump a bucket of water over his head to cool off.
On August 7, 1973, another bolt ripped through his hat and hit him on the head, set his hair on fire again, threw him out of his truck and knocked his left shoe off.
On June 5, 1976, a sixth strike in 1976 left him with an injured ankle.
On June 25th, 1977, the last lightning bolt to hit Roy Sullivan sent him to the hospital with chest and stomach burns in 1977.

His wife was also struck once, when a sudden storm welled up as she and her husband were out hanging wash on the back yard clothesline. On September 28, 1983, Roy Sullivan died at age 71, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound over troubles unrelated to lightning.

Joe Simpson: Conquered Siula Grande, dropped 100ft into an Ice Crevasse, crawled 3 days

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were the first to scale the west peak of the Siula Grande, in the Peruvian Andes. Disaster struck on the way down, and Yates was forced to let a badly wounded Simpson drop 100 feet into an ice crevasse. Simpson survived the fall and spent three days crawling back to base camp.

Truman Duncan: Cut in Two by a Train

Railroad switchman Truman Duncan fell off the front of a moving train car. He was swept underneath and cut in two. Despite losing both legs and a kidney, Duncan called the paramedics on his cell phone, survived a 45-minute wait, and then persevered through 23 surgeries.

Aron Ralston: Amputated his lower right Arm to Survive the Mountains

On May 2003, while Aron Ralston was on a canyoneering trip in Blue John Canyon (near Moab, Utah), a boulder fell and pinned his right forearm, crushing it.

After trying for five days to lift and break the boulder, desperation took him to great measures like carving his name, date of birth and date of death into the boulder, drinking his own urine because of lack of water and videotaping his last goodbyes to his family. Finally, a dehydrated and delirious Ralston decided to bow his arm against a chockstone and snap the radius and ulna bones. Using the dull blade on his multiuse tool, he cut the soft tissue around the break. He then used the tool's pliers to tear at the tougher tendons. After Ralston was rescued, his arm was retrieved by park authorities and removed from under the boulder. It was cremated and given to Ralston. He returned to the boulder and left the ashes there.

Robert Evans: Survived Being Hit by Car, Then Train Hours Later

"He got two ambulance rides last night," said the police. "It's an extreme oddity that someone is hit by a car and a train on the same night. I can't imagine that this has ever happened before in Boulder." An early morning of September 2008, 46-year-old homeless man Robert Evans had a hit-and-run car accident, and while walking back from the hospital to his camp, he was knocked off a narrow railroad bridge into a creek by a train, surviving the second accident in seven hours. Police said Evans was hit by the railing of a stairway on the side of the train. The railroad bridge is only wide enough to accommodate the train tracks and is not intended for pedestrians or other traffic.

Mauro Prosperi: Survived 9 days in the Sahara Desert

Prosperi, a keen endurance runner, took part in the 1994 Marathon des Sables (Marathon of the Sands) in Morocco. Part way through the 6-day 233 kilometre event a sandstorm caused Prosperi to lose his way. He ended up disoriented and ran in the wrong direction, ultimately running several hundred kilometres into Algeria. After 36 hours he ran out of food and water. He survived by drinking his own urine and eating bats resident in an abandoned mosque and the occasional snake found in the desert.

Not wishing to die a long drawn out death, Prosperi attempted to commit suicide in the mosque by slitting his wrists with a pen knife he had with him. The attempt failed - lack of water had caused Prosperi's blood to thicken and clotted the wound before he died.

After nine days alone in the desert he was found by a nomadic family and taken to an Algerian military camp and from there to a hospital. He was 186 miles off route, and reportedly had lost between 30 and 40 pounds (18 kg) in body weight.
