1) If possible, avoid taking jobs just for the money.

It actually took me a long time to figure this one out…

Because I used to think of freelancing decisions as “business decisions”, i.e. decisions that should not involve emotion.

I figured if a client was willing to pay the amount I wanted, and I was able to do the job well, then what was the harm in saying yes?

But over time I realized that freelancing isn’t just a business, it’s also a lifestyle.

And part of that lifestyle is doing work you enjoy.

When you think about it that way, doing jobs you have genuine interest in is better for your lifestyle than doing jobs just for the money.

You’ll enjoy the work.

You’ll be happier. You’ll be healthier (mentally and physically).

You’ll do a better job.

The client will be happier.

You’ll get more repeat business and referrals.

Literally everything gets better if you follow this one simple bit of wisdom.

(If you can’t follow it right now due to financial constraints, that’s okay – you can still begin working toward this future ideal, right now.)

2) Clients pay more for freelancers they don’t have to manage.

Where do you pay more for food: A restaurant, or a grocery store?

Obviously it’s the restaurant – they charge you more (and you happily pay it) because you don’t have to do all of the work involved in cooking, cleaning up, etc.

Something similar happens in freelancing. Clients are willing to pay you more, when they don’t have to do as much work to manage you.

In other words, if they know they can rely on you to manage yourself, that saves them time, money, and headaches…

So they are willing to pay more for that.

All of the most successful freelancers I know, are self-managed freelancers.

They don’t rely on the client to have to manage them – they manage themselves, and charge above average (or even premium) prices for their work because of it.

3) Want more/better clients? Hire a freelancer.

There’s this great reality TV show called The Pitch, where two advertising agencies are brought in to compete for a big company’s business…

One of my favorite episodes involved an ad agency owner named Jose, who won the competition by an absolute LANDSLIDE…

Every time Jose spoke, the client absolutely lit up…

I mean the client was totally captivated by every word of Jose’s pitch! It was like the other agency didn’t even EXIST…

And of course at the end of the show the client hired Jose without a second thought.

Jose’s secret? He used to be a client himself!

That’s right, he used to work at a big company and his job was to listen to ad agencies pitch business to HIM.

Because of that he was highly in tune with how to pitch a client…

What to say, what not to say, how to say it, and so on.

I equate this to becoming a stand up comedian… Before you can make people laugh, you need to first sit in the audience and see what makes YOU laugh.

So I highly recommend hiring at least one freelancer, to see what it’s like to stand in the client’s shoes…

Every single one of my students who has done this, has come back to tell me it was a highly enlightening experience for them.
