Reread that scene where Jaqen changed his face before Arya, and note the description of the new face. Then read the prologue (can't remember which book it was) where Pate got killed and note the description of the alchemist.

Oahray: I don't think the Pate part is doubling back. Pate was killed before Sam's arrival, by a faceless man (evidently Jaqen H'ghar) posing as an alchemist, who then took on his face and identity.

So Pate, Sam's" colleague" is actually a fraudster faceless man on an undisclosed mission.

oluamid: I agree that Rob's army was depleted and it would make it harder to organize a siege but it's not impossible. Remember that the Lannisters are also preoccupied with defending King's Landing from Stannis' army and Rob needed Frey's army to boost morale and not to cross the twins ( he had already crossed the bridge and needed Frey's army for an all out attack on the Lannisters whilst they are distracted by Stannis). Rob was also trying to protect the North from the invaders from the sea (Greyjoys). Rob simply have no excuse not to fulfill his obligations cos he needed allies especially when you are fighting the Lannisters, and also because the Starks are known for their honour and Rob acted most dishonourably.



However, I'm not trying to say Frey is innocent, only why I'm not sorry Rob was killed. in fact, I'm more sorry Greywind (Rob's wolf) and Catelyn Stark lost their lives than Rob and his yeye queen.

oluamid: We all love ASOIF theories, don't we? Sure we do . Before the great tragedy of the Nairaland attack this thread was a beehive of theories and counter theories and we were already about 14 pages long. Phew *sighs* . Unfortunately, since "winter came" in form of that attack the thread has experienced a lull and comments have come at a premium.

SIRcumalot: A siege is exactly what Rob doesn't want he needed to cross that bridge quickly, we forget that Rob's army have depleted significantly after the Insult to both the Frey and the Karstarks.
What enemies will the lannisters be fighting ? I hate to see how they will pass up this advantage
A siege would give the Freys a much better standing with the Lannisters than the Red wedding option,because I can't even remember the Price Walder got for his betrayal I think he got Riverrun for one of his Son who is conveniently Married to a Lannister who controls the Marriage.
It easy to say the end justify the Means now but we know this story hasn't end.
And I don't really support any house and after Book 5, I can't stand tyrion as long as Samwell Tarly doesn't die,the whole lot can die

oluamid: Yes, Frey is a traitor for betraying his overlord. But his overload is Tully not Stark and the alliance Frey had with the Starks is based on Rob making a Frey his queen. It is universally known that Walder Frey is a fickle old groat and takes insults to mind.

Besides, looking at it from the Frey perspective you know its not possible that Frey aligns with the Lannisters without dire repercussions. His army will strengthen the Stark/Tully alliance but will have no hope against it. Immediately Frey declares for the Lannisters he'll find himself surrounded in a Stark/Tully siege and the Lannisters won't even be able to help because they will be too busy with battles of their own. So the way out is to scatter/significantly weaken the Starks/Tully alliance while declaring for Lannisters. And how best do you do that? Kill Rob stark and Catelyn Tully and their soldiers, take Edmund Tully hostage to make sure Bryden Tully and any other remnants of the Stark/Tully alliance won't come against you, befriend the ambitious Boltons and take them into your confidence. So you see, reputation or no, survival is all that matters. At the end, Walder Frey got his revenge, Rob Stark and his mother are killed, Bolton (the new Warden of the North) is a fast friend and the Lannisters are allies. All is good in the Frey world.

Unfortunately, the Starks/Winterfell (everyone's favourite house) was left in ruin.

Perfect example of "the end justifies the means" if you ask me.

Walder Frey's action at the Red wedding can't be justified at all no matter how you spin it ?
Walder could've broken out of the Agreement and sided with the Lannister since Rob broke his words first but no he had to Kill him and his people.
And the Blow back on them is that to already popular Opinion that they are Cowards they have added Treachery to the List. Nobody trust the Freys
