Whether Russia is democratic or not is for Russians to decide. After all democracy is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people

https://www.justsecurity.org/87071/2023-democracy-perception-index-a-wake-up-call-for-us-eu/

You might also want to check the approval rating of Vladimir Putin and compare it to that of other "democratic" western leaders, America's Biden in particular. tongue tongue
Even the Chinese people living under this "brutal", "evil", "communist regime" feel that their country is more democratic, and serves the interest of her people compared to American citizens grin grin What's the point of democracy when your people aren't satisfied, and believe their government only serve the interest of the few elites (over 58% Americans and less than 10% for the Chinese).

You're right.
Democracy promises so much and delivers so little, using up huge resources and causing deep divisions.

There's no better pointer to this than the African experience.
And as our poor countries try to recover from one episode, another cycle of "elections" creeps up upon us again, draining more resources (and emotions) with very little to show.

Maybe this is peculiar to Africa sha.

Yesterday, I told my wife and kid that the last carton of indomie noodles I grudgingly bought 2wks ago for N11,000 would be the very last in my house. Women being women, just this morning, my wife was asking me if I really meant it and wouldn't get them even if na half carton if the one at home finishes. The bombastic side eye I gave her was enough to remind her that I'm just a level 11 FG worker trying to stay afloat.

The "level 11" part gave you away!

You are mixing up Qatar and UAE.
Saudi, Egypt, UAE backed and financed the Haftar government in Benghazi while Qatar and Turkey backed the UN backed government in Tripoli.
But mind you that all the GCC sent weapons and billions of dollars to destroy Libya but immediately Gadaffi was killed, they start supporting different factions.

Saudi, UAE, Egypt see the Muslim brotherhood has a terrorists organisation While Turkey, Hamas and Qatar sees them as a great group.

In Yemen, both Saudi and UAE funded and supported against Houthi’s people but within the region gained by both Saudi and UAE troops in Yemen, they have different ideas on how to control Yemen, that gave Houthi’s massive opportunity.

UAE backed militias sees Saudi backed militias has too extreme, Saudi backed militias allows too many executions under them which leads to fight between UAE and Saudi backed militias.

Saudi shares border with Houthi military and one of the reason, the Houthis have been hitting Saudi oilfields successfully while UAE is very far from Houthi’s control territory.

Just like what’s going on in Syria, there is Turkey, Qatar backed rebel government.

Wetin concern me with Qatar?
Was talking about Saudi-UAE rivalry.
Please read it up.

please details, even if its a little, it would be much appreciated. Especially 2 and 3

Ok.

As for no 2, Sudan has huge gold reserves. Recent estimates put it at about the 3rd largest in Africa.
Before the war Russia had some sort of security pact with Sudan in exchange for gold mines. The mines were maintained for Russia by the Wagner group. Over time, Wagner became closer to the RSF (Rapid Response Forces), a paramilitary group empowered by the former military ruler, Omer Albashir. When the Ukraine war started, Russia became more dependent on gold to survive the barrage of western sanctions slammed on it. Wagner helped Russia ferry out huge amounts of gold from Sudan with the RSF also helping to protect the gold mines as Sudan had become more unstable after the military coup of 2021.
In 2023 when war broke out between the military govt and the RSF (leaders of both groups are the head and deputy of the junta),
Wagner (not Russia per se) was naturally drawn into it by providing some low key support for the RSF. For Wagner, RSF must not fall so the mines will be protected.

As for number 3,
Saudi and the UAE, both being members of the GCC have been fighting a very cold war over which country is more influencial in the MENA region. Both countries rather than cooperate on issues, eventually find themselves on opposing sides. In Yemen, Saudi backed the main govt, UAE supported the opposing group. In Libya, UAE backs Haftar while Saudi backs the other. The same scenario is playing out in Sudan. Saudi and Egypt back the ruling military govt while the UAE backs Hemedti, the RSF leader. To ensure that RSF does not fall, UAE has supplies weapons to the RSF through Eritrea for months now. Saudi on the other hand has repeatedly led efforts at cessation of fighting in Sudan together with the United States and this angers the UAE as it wants to be recognized as the closest ally of the US in the region. The UAE rushed to sign the Abrahams accord, normalizing relations with Israel, to please the US. It's the reason MBS has insisted that in spite of the genocidal war between Hamas and Israel, it was willing to go ahead and normalize relations with Israel despite public angst against the move.

Are you annoyed with the way isreal just dey enter Syria, Lebanon and Iraq anyhow like a woman?
I still have my reservations against Russians in the middle east. They are not to be too relied on.
They have a S-400/500 I think I'm Syria to protect the Syria airspace but it has just been a sitting ducks since without intercepting any isrealis missiles nor aircrafts yet the same air defence system is effective back at home to Ukrainian missiles.
I think the large Russian Jews in isreal makes them somehow soft with isreal, so I will prefer Iranian air defence because they won't be partial.
Well said.

You could be right but it is just speculation until it crystallizes. What I'm seeing now is just a kind of religious war between Shiites and Shias though I could be wrong.

I was in Sudan when the war started so you can be DEAD SURE I know what I'm talking about.

These are (among other things), the major reasons behind the Sudan war:

1. Proposed Russian military base in Port Sudan.
Major players: Russia, Sudanese govt. and probably the US (acting as the spoiler)

2. Sudan's huge gold reserve.
Major players: The Wagner group and the RSF
(RSF being the paramilitary group fighting the ruling govt.)

3. Rivalry of the Gulf giants.
Major players: Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Sudan war has NOTHING to do with the Shia/Sunni factor. Sudan is a predominantly Sunni country.

I won't mind going into details if you want me to.
