EJaja: Bro how do one who have no previous idea go into the above stated processn. Can u pls outline the step by step procedure. Secondly how do one compete with the known brands like stalions, mama Gold and co? .If you are new into rice, therein the steps: 1. Look for a farm or Rice market to buy your paddy 2. To your paddy to the miller, depending on the mill, you may be charged per kilo for processing. 3. After which you bag your rice. To answer the second question, create a brand and target market for yourself. Like LASG rice it's branded "Eko Rice" in 25kg and it sells like mad. Their rice is sold out before harvest. You can make yours 2kg or 5kg with a unique. The market is too large for just a few. |
Hi guys, I am typing this the way it comes to my head, so please try and understand my flow. The Rice Value Chain is an avenue to partake in profit sharing from rice cultivation to sale to the end user. A lot of inputs are required before a cup is rice is ready for you buy. In the long chain you can select area in the process as yours. You can work on the farm as a tractor operator, herbicide and pesticide sprayer or supplier, weeder, harvester, you might have a combine harvester ( harvest and threshed) , a paddy buyer and miller or just a miller, buying of processed rice and package. But for this discussion we will dwell on the area that interest me. I realised that processed rice sell better and give more profit. Before I did rice with LASG (Rice for Job) I use to buy milled rice from the east and package, a point a friend said should your supplier fail you what will you do? What to do drove my into farming rice. We did semi mechanised at the farm, but guy, the other part no easy o. Any way, I learnt proper rice farming. Back to the matter, buying paddy from farmers or commodity market then you process the rice. During processing, it important to watch where you dry your rice because this is where stones get into our local rice. If you have a destoner that will a plus for you. Get a branded package for your rice, then you are good to go. If you have a question or contribution, please join. |
Hi guys, I am just thinking, can we discuss the VALUE CHAIN aspect of rice next week. December is coming. Some of us can hit the road aand start making money. Anybody in support? |
shikaan: u are stu.pid.... id.iot sinciere people expose evil... muslim or christianYou are insulting me? Do you know me? If you see me in person do think you have to the guts to insult me? I really see the generation you belong. You can write whatever you like, I bet you if u see me in person u will apologise. My father did not teach me to insult people. But you, I sorry for the ones that comes after you. Change your ways or else, it will course you a lot. God bless you. |
justwise: Your stand is changing now, i'm definitely not a saint but does that means we should cover 'our own'? Each time story about criminals in the house of God comes up we see many 'followers' of men of 'gOD' springing up to defend their 'daddy' but the same people will be quick to condemn thieving politicians. Aren't you lot a hypocrite? My stand has not changed. I will not judge my fellow christian in the public. The bible set a standard to rebuke a fellow christian. If I can not rebuke him, then I leave him to God. You can only be fooled if you don't read your bible and have understanding of it. You will only judge a thief if you don't benefit from his loot. like we have them in our govt. If he shd call you to be his PA, you will jump to heaven praising him. But alas, |
justwise: ...and your point is? Because he is a Christian we should cover him up and not talk about the alleged fraud?I said, he that has no sin should cast the stone. For he that thinks he stand, take heed lest you fall. I always ask myself, if I am in their position, will I do better? Everybody has the tendency to sin, if a temptation comes and you don't fall for it, then can you judge others. We have seen people that judged others but when they are presented with the same package they follow suit. Are you a saint? Then carry on with your judgement. Do you think God is fool to say let the wheat and tares grow together. |
Can I ask one simple question, why do we cast stone on our own? Have ever heard a muslim casting stone on their own? Are we saying there is no fraud and deceit in other religion? Do you see it published. You will not, they protect their own. No matter how much we judge them, God has the final say concerning them. "Let he without sin cast the first stone" " If you fail in one you've failed in all" |
Please, where is Ojuelegba on your list. There are people that has never been to Lagos but knows Ojuelegba, the most popular in Nigeria not just Lagos. Lol. |
cyborg1: Hard farm land always required tillage, for gaseous penetration and support of microbial activities to the roots.I know if you are doing lowland rice planting u still need to till the land with a machine called power tiller. |
cyborg1: In my own place, land preparation is required less even. We dry herbs around with non-selective herbicides and cut them off thereafter and arrange it. Cultivation is no longer required. You just sow the seedlings or plant the nursery. The skip of cultivation makes it far less expensive these day and many are getting back to the farm for that! With lowland, u spend less, but with upland, you must take into consideration that rice is not a good competitor with weeds. To have a good yield, land preparation is key. |
cyborg1: I am aware of that. But the merchants and larger percent of consumer, especially the commercial food vendors like restaurant managers really care less about nutrient thing to appearance. There is a machine use for polishing and de stone |
securi: Thanks. Pls, what's the yeild per hectare in uplan?Everything being equal, 1.5 tonne Birds can cost a serious damage in just one day. It happen to us. |
amarawa: I asked about the cost analysis earlier. Are you consulting? I will give this info then you can run the cost: 1. Land - lease or buy 2. Land preparation ( tractor: plow (2), harrow (1) 3. Seeding (Paddy 50kg by planter, 80 - 100kg by broadcasting) 4. Herbicide (selective and non-selective)and pesticide 5. Fertilisers (5- ![]() 6. Labour (harvester, sprayer, bird scares 7. Spraying tanks.. This is mainly for upland planting |
Rexyl: can somebody help with the varieties that can do better in SW States --- put into consideration the areas with heavy and low rainfalls in the zone.NERICA 8 and FARRO 55 do well in upland. |
Pavore9: @mount1ng, l know those scarescrow do not scare the birds as they are very sharp, l feel for farmers who had to physically watch over their rice fields. How is harvesting and threshing done at your own end?Combined harvester. It harvest and threshed at the same time. |
ajeniya1: If you consider the issue of pest as an impediment you will never farm.......You must be prepare for the pest. Don't let take you by surprise. I learnt of a new colour changing tape for scaring birds used in SA. |
hotmas911: We have thousands of acresHow much is the tractor operations per acre? |
Rexyl: What is the best time to plant rice across various States of Nigeria? If irrigated, twice or thrice. If nature farming, target the raining period. Start your land preparation in March plant in late April, harvest in 90 -120 days. Depending on the type of rice.. |
Pavore9: Most local farmers use scarecrows to scare the birds and since grasscutters are attracted to rice farms, have traps placed around the farm in order to protect the farm and also get bushmeat. (l know some will be screaming Ebola)Did I hear you say SCARECROWS! Give the birds two days, they will start perching on it. I am not talking from hear say. These birds are BAD and very intelligent. In the farm, we call them wi*ches. This is the period I dread most. Nothing scare the birds like Human. They study everything around them and operate likewise. You must be prepare for this period during you planting season. |
cyborg1: This is general core business ethics, standing out from the crowd. I will like to know other techniques used in cleaning the rice as bright as the foreign brands, trash free?Polishing. This drops the nutrients quality in the rice. |
This is one of the worst enemy of rice farmer.
|
kolaide: what do you mean by " rice chain value"?"value chain" is when value is added to a product outside planting. You buying Rice paddy from the farmers, then process to bag. With that, you've added value to the rice. Which sells better. We sold a tonne to LASG for 80K. But when we processed and sold to them we made double. So u see, you make more money when u add value to a product. |
securi: Thanks Bro. I am about investigating the soil to know if rice will grow well there.Once a get a clear signal, I will start soon by His graceAre u doing upland or lowland rice? To really enjoy and have a very good yield, you MUST have WATER, very good land preparation and effective (trouble from the sky) birds control system. If u don't put these in place, omo, you will burn money. |
securi: Meaning my planned 30 hectares is just a child's play.Hope the market can still accomodate ppl like us.That's not small. Lagos state rice farm at Itoga, Badagry, is 50 Hectares, but never planted the whole. If you can effective cultivate 10 Hectares, that will be very great. I know what I am saying. I am not an internet farmer. I preferred the rice value chain. That's where the money is. |

fm7070: 420 hectare rice plantation is huge!Lagos State has 500 hectares in Eggua in Ogun State just for rice cultivation. |
Na I see. I saw a guy expertly catching Lizards. His baco bag was half full of lizards. I wondered what he wanted to do with them. Hmmmm. Nija..... |
Agric is not easy when you don't have the right tools. You don't do agric from e-book or textbooks. It is PRACTICAL. No story. I did rice farming with Lagos State for 2 years. I learnt a lot about farming. There are stages and timing in farming which if you miss it, that's where the risks and uncertainties comes in. Like the site manager will always say, "farming is like photo". Like the OP said, get somebody to learn the type of farming you intend to do. |
If I may ask which do you prefer, Abraham righteousness or Lazarus righteousness. Mind you they both made heaven. Many of you critics wish to be in their position. Abeg. |
Goshen360: One thing I know is, today's church is still far from Christ like Christianity. Christ never taught such neither the Apostles. Until we understand Christ-like Christianity, we will continue to promote religion thinking we're doing God a favour. The Christ I know, will never excommunicate any of His followers - that's the Christianity of Christ.Don't speak out of sentiment. Study the bible very well. Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Can you loose your salvation? Assembly of people is not a church but you are the church. Christ is coming back you not a building. God help us through the Holy Spirit to be ready for His coming. |
I attended one that the father of the bride said something that got me thinking. He said the other of his daughter that he returned, is back in his house. It's a shame to a family that a woman married out to return to her father's house. So he is not returning this one. I guess that's why we have so many divorces. The ladies should tell their father before hand not to return the bride price so that you don't return to your father's house ooo. ![]() |
