Islam for Muslims / Re: A Muslim's View Of The Ban On Alcohol In Kano State by Mozehh: 7:21pm On Dec 05, 2013
I have gone through this thread and nobody seems to address the issue. Everyone is just beating about the bush and seemingly trying to justify one wrong by citing another. This is the issue as i see it:

Was it LAWFUL (i.e according to nigerian constitution) for the governor to destroy the alcohol? Now I am quite aware that the state seems to adopt sharia law, but like the mod indicated, does sharia law apply to all within a territory or only to muslims? I think muslims only (I may be wrong). If the alcohol belonged to a muslim, perhaps he was right to destroy it (I do not know the details sharia law). If it however belonged to a non-muslim, he broke the law and should pay a full refund. It's that simple!

In addition, a state decides how it is governed by laws. You may feel alcohol and many other vices are morally wrong, but if that is not in the law of the land, you keep your morals to yourself or if you must do something about it, vote in reps and senators who promise to include the ban of alcohol in the constitution. No morally apt person should be in support of the consumption of alcohol. Every morally apt person should however be against the breaking of the law.

every time something like this happens we are told that the perps are not the true face of Islam, they are just a fanatical group that does not follow the true meaning of Islam, I am starting to think they are the true believers of this murdering religion (even though it is not a religion, it is a political movement) and the others are just waiting their turn.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Why Do Non-Muslim Terrorists Get Little Press Coverage? by Mozehh: 2:55am On Jun 13, 2013
tbaba1234:

The first thing to say is that in islam, there is no compulsion in religion, The Quran(translated) states:

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (Quran 2:256)

However in an Islamic state, there are certain conditions where conversion is accompanied with acts that could be considered treasonable by the state. The punishment for treason is death.

The act of just conversion is not punishable in most cases, however if that conversion is accompanied by an attempt to discredit Islam or propagate another religion within the islamic state, It is considered treasonable.

The apostacy law came about during the time of the prophet;

In order to discredit Islam, some Jews in medina would accept islam in the day and leave by sunset; They continued to do so until the law was put in place.

Guess how many people did so the next day? None,

Look at the apostacy law this way;

Acts against the nation are considered treason aren't they? what is punishment for treason in 9ja?

The constitution of an Islamic state is based on Islam; If i live in the state, i abide by its laws;

If someone leaves Islam in an Islamic state for whatever reason, as long as he doesn't go around opening trying to convert people to whatever belief/unbelief he has found thereby trying to discredit the constitution of the state. He is fine. Otherwise, It is treasonable.

He can live his life, he doesn't have to pray or fast if he doesn't want to..

Besides, the person is not just executed, he speaks to the scholars about his doubts and is provided evidences about the divinity of the Quran so as to convince him, if that fails, he is threatened basically to shut him up from proselytizing disbelief in an Islamic state. If he relents, he is let go and can continue in his disbelief and live his normal life.

2 things.

1) Dr. Nair did not specify that his belief on apostasy which "betathings" approves of, applies only to islamic states.
2) I think that bringing death (or the threat of death) into a reasoning exercise somehow removes the possibility of objectivity and allows decisions to be made based on fear. But that is just my opinion. Afterall, what do I know? smiley

Christians practised a far more brutal form of the law.

Laws have procedure. In Islam, it is not that straightforward. There are several conditions. Most times people don't get punished at all.

So what are those conditions? And how do they somehow justify the killing of an innocent person who is no longer bound by islamic law because he has changed his beliefs?

Yes. I used an analogy in politics to explain my point. And yes, it would be hypocrisy if the christians of today view the activities of the ancient christians favorably. But most that i am aware of do not.

The person who asked a question is indirectly comparing,

The punishment for apostasy in Islam is death. Now this was really practised when Islam early in the history of Islam when it was at war with non-muslims and survival depended on protecting war plans
I don't see it being practised now.

If you have this belief, then it is difficult for me to assume you look at things objectively since there is the possibility of you having to die if you see things from a different perspective than you currently do. The man who has nothing to lose can allow his mind to wander until it comes to rest on what makes the most sense and appeals to reason the most. On the other hand, the man who is at risk of losing his life is only bound to think along the lines that would preserve the life everyone holds so dearly to. This, sir, is where our beliefs differ.

Not to forget that apostasy was punished by the death penalty in Christianity for centuries.

Yes (quite possibly even though no such story comes to mind). And perhaps this automatically makes it right to kill people who do it now. "by your reasoning", it is not wrong for Jonathan's govt. to be corrupt since the people who held government positions before him were corrupt. Please justify your religion without comparing it to others.

So where do you stand in relation to media coverage of terrorism by non-muslims?

I think that it is unfair but not altogether without reason. It is rather difficult not to focus attention on events that tend to call for attention (such as 9/11). These rather chaotic events can sometimes pique peoples interests in smaller events that may or may not be unrelated and the media seeking to sponge off people's ignorance will try to paint these events as if they are related. That is why people always seek for links to al-qeada in almost every terrorist attack. It is because they have carried out catastrophic attacks before and the media seeks to get attention by trying to suggest al-qeada links to every terrorist attack.

I have answered your question!

Where do you stand on Dr. Nair's statement?

No one, no matter the reason they have, including the Police, should take the law into their hands

you did not support violence against the innocent but you do support Dr. Nair who says that people who convert from islam and try to further their new religion should be put to death. I do not know how such people are guilty of anything.

moscobabs: A medical doctor by professional training, Dr ZakirNaik is renowned as a dynamic international orator on Islam and Comparative Religion. Dr Zakir Naik is the president of Islamic Research Foundation, Mumbai. Dr Zakir clarifies Islamic viewpoints and clears misconceptions about Islam, using the Qur’an, authentic Hadith and other religious Scriptures as a basis, in conjunction with reason, logic and scientific facts. He is 47 years old.

He is popular for his critical analysis and convincing answers to challenging questions posed by audiences after his public talks. In the last 17 years (by the year 2013) Dr Zakir Naik has delivered more than 2000 public talks in the U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Italy, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Botswana, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Guyana (South America), Trinidad, Mauritius and many other countries, in addition to numerous public talks in India.

I just wonder how reasonable, logical and scientifically factual these views are. God help us if we have men living on the surface of the earth and thinking like this:

Apostasy
Naik has said that not all Muslims who convert from Islam should necessarily receive death sentences, but that those who leave Islam and then "propagate the non-Islamic faith and speak against Islam" should be punished with death.

Propagation of other faiths in Islamic states
Naik says that propagation of other religions within an Islamic state is forbidden while he appreciates people of other religions allowing Muslims to freely propagate Islam in their country. Naik explains this by saying that, for example, mathematics teachers must teach that 2+2=4 and not 2+2=3 or 5. Likewise, Naik argues, “regarding building of churches or temples, how can we allow this when their religion is wrong and when their worshipping is wrong?”

deols:

what is your proof that they are oppressed?

Christian community today

There are more than a million Roman Catholics in Saudi Arabia. Most of them are expatriate Filipinos and Indians who work there, but who do not have the citizenship of Saudi Arabia.[1][2] The percentage of Christians of all denominations among the about 1.2 million Filipinos in Saudi Arabia likely exceeds 90%.[3] There are also Christians from Canada, the United States of America, Italy, South Korea, Ireland, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and as well a number of Christians from sub-Saharan countries who are working in the Saudi Kingdom.[3]
Saudi Arabia allows Christians to enter the country as foreign workers for temporary work, but does not allow them to practice their faith openly. Because of that Christians generally only worship in secret within private homes.[3] Items and articles belonging to religions other than Islam are prohibited.[3] These include Bibles, crucifixes, statues, carvings, items with religious symbols, and others.[3]
The Saudi Arabian Mutaween (Arabic: مطوعين), or Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (i.e., the religious police) prohibits the practice of any religion other than Islam.[3] Conversion of a Muslim to another religion is considered apostasy,[3] a crime punishable by death if the accused does not recant.[3] The Government does not permit non-Muslim clergy to enter the country for the purpose of conducting religious services.[3]
International Christian Concern (ICC) protested what it reported as the 2001 detention of 11 Christians in Saudi Arabia, for practicing their religion in their homes.[4] In June 2004, ICC reported on what it termed a "pogrom-like" crackdown by Saudi police on Christians after media reports of Koran desecration in Guantanamo Bay.[5]
Christians and other non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the cities of Mecca and Medina, Islam's holiest cities.[3]
Churches [edit]

Currently there are no official churches in Saudi Arabia of any Christian denomination.[3] The small number of Saudi Arabian Christians meets in internet chat rooms and private meetings.[3] Foreign Christians may meet at church meetings held at one of several embassies after registering and showing their passport to prove foreign nationality, or by private assemblies in school gyms located in gated communities on Aramco grounds. They can also hold services in each others' houses.
Demographics [edit]

The percentage of Saudi Arabian citizens who are Christians is officially zero,[6] as Saudi Arabia forbids religious conversion from Islam (Apostasy) and punishes it by death (Capital punishment in Saudi Arabia).[3][7]

Crime / Man Beheaded In Broad Daylight In London. CRAZY! by Mozehh: 8:30pm On May 22, 2013
London (CNN) -- A man thought to be a serving British soldier was killed by two armed men in a frenzied attack on a London street Wednesday, in what the government is treating as a suspected act of terrorism.
Witnesses told of a gruesome scene in which the man was hit by a car, then hacked with cleavers and his body dumped in the middle of the road in Woolwich, southeast London.
The two suspects in the killing were injured in a confrontation with police and have been taken to two hospitals, where they are being treated.
CNN affiliate ITN aired a video showing a man with bloody hands and holding a meat cleaver, who says, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you."
The man, who is black and appears to have a London accent, carries on: "The only reasons we killed this man this is because Muslims are dying daily. This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth.
Deadly attack near London barracks London attack: Eyewitness heard gunshots Terrorism analyst on soldier killing Cell phone video of London attack scene
"We apologize that women had to see this today but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don't care about you."
The victim is believed to be a serving soldier who was based at a nearby barracks, Nick Raynsford, a member of Parliament, told CNN.
The soldier had apparently been on duty in central London and was returning to the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich when he was attacked, Raynsford said.
Speaking in Paris, Prime Minister David Cameron said there were "strong indications" that the man's killing was a terrorist incident.
He said he would be returning early from the official trip to handle the situation and will be back in London Wednesday night.
"It is the most appalling crime," he said, speaking alongside French President Francois Hollande, who pledged solidarity with Britain in the face of terrorist threats.
Cameron declined to confirm whether the man killed was a serving soldier, while Britain's defense ministry said it was investigating to see whether that's the case. But the prime minister vowed the United Kingdom would stand firm in the face of threats to its security and "will not buckle."
UK Home Secretary Theresa May led a meeting of the country's civil emergency committee, known as COBRA, on Wednesday evening, and Cameron will chair another such meeting on Thursday.
Afterward, authorities increased security around Woolwich and all military barracks in London, a British government source said.
British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said the killing was a "very shocking incident" and that the UK takes the safety of its troops "very seriously," as he headed into the COBRA meeting.
London Mayor Boris Johnson tweeted: "This afternoon's attack in Woolwich is a sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence. My thoughts are with the victim and his family."
That sentiment was echoed by many others -- such as May, the Home Secretary, who described it as a "a sickening and barbaric attack," and Labour Party leader Ed Millband, who predicted the "whole country will be horrified" by what he called the "appalling events."
Commander Simon Letchworth told reporters in Woolwich that local officers had responded when an assault was reported at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and a firearms unit was called to the scene. British police do not usually carry firearms.
"Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police," he said. "They have both been taken to separate London hospitals and are receiving treatment for their injuries."
'They were hacking at this poor guy'
Eyewitnesses have given gruesome details of the killing.
One, Michael Atlee told CNN he and friends heard gunshots and when they turned the corner saw a pool of blood on the sidewalk and a trail of blood leading into the road.
The man killed appeared to be wearing a T-shirt for Help for Heroes, a charity that helps military veterans, he said.
Another witness, who gave his name only as James, told London's LBC 97.3 radio station that he saw two men standing by the victim on the floor.
At first he thought they were trying to help the man but then saw two meat cleavers, like a butcher would have.
"They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told the radio station, as if they were trying to remove his organs.
"These two guys were crazed. They were just not there. They were just animals."
The men appeared to want to be filmed, he said, saying that one of the attackers went over to a bus and asked people to take photos of him as if he wanted to be on TV.
He said the two men had rushed at the police when they arrived, at which point shots were fired and both men went down.
Lauren Collins told CNN: "I still am quite shaken at what I've seen -- I've seen a victim of an awful attack, and I've seen a body of a young man."
Another witness, Woolwich Theatre owner Adrian Green, said the incident was "shocking" but did not reflect the true nature of the area.
Raynsford said the military based at the centuries-old barracks had a close relationship with the local community. Woolwich is a mixed, multicultural area, he added.

Politics / Nigeria Is 3rd In Most Dangerous Waters by Mozehh: 3:26pm On May 21, 2013
Maritime piracy returned from days of old to become a front-of-mind issue for governments, shipping companies, cruise lines, energy firms, global conglomerates and—perhaps most immediately—for sailors in the earliest part of the 21st Century. Since then, while some former piracy hot spots aren’t as “hot” as they once were, the criminal phenomenon has persisted and spread globally.
When CNBC first examined the world’s most dangerous waters in 2008, Somalian pirates operating in the Gulf of Aden and coastal Somalia easily dominated as the globe’s most prolific, according to data compiled by the International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre. Somalia and the Gulf of Aden still have treacherous waters, but no longer the worst: Over the last five quarters, examined here, a new country’s national waters have become the most heavily pirated on earth.
Also changed are the tactics used to combat piracy. National navies have become much more active in the fight against piracy, and commercial tankers and cargo vessels increasingly employ armed security—a concept that was rare and even discouraged in many maritime circles as recently as 2008.
As may be expected, however, as greater arms have come to bear against the pirates, the maritime brigands have honed their tactics and beefed up their armament as well. Read on here for a look at the world’s most pirate-infested waters, and learn about individual attacks from each place.

1. Indonesia (43 Pirate Attacks Since January 1, 2012)
Attacked Vessel: Rudolf Schulte
National Flag: Singapore
Vessel Type: Chemical Tanker
Date: Sept. 3, 2012

Indonesia’s 17,500 islands and their surrounding waters now take the title as the world’s most heavily pirated. Shortly before 11 p.m. at Belawan Anchorage, the docked Rudolf Schulte, shown here, was boarded by six pirates who climbed aboard using a long bamboo pole topped with a metal hook. A sailor on duty spotted the men, who were armed with guns and knives. The pirates noticed the sailor as well, and attacked him as he tried to contact the ship’s bridge on a handheld radio. The robbers swiped his walkie-talkie, thrust him to the deck and bound him. They then turned to the ship’s stores and began to plunder. The raiding may have distracted the pirates, however, as the sailor managed to free himself and take off on foot toward the bridge. He raised a general alarm. The sound frightened the pirates, who fled. Indonesian authorities were informed, but as is often the case, their efforts were too little, too late. The six pirates, with their contraband, escaped into the night, free to attack again.

2. Somalia (31 Pirate Attacks)
Attacked Vessel: MSC Jasmine
National Flag: Panama
Vessel Type: Container
Date: Jan. 5, 2013

Somalian piracy isn’t as widespread as it was five years ago, but it’s still a serious problem. The mostly Ukrainian crew of MSC Jasmine was underway in broad daylight when six pirates in a skiff began chasing their ship. Shortly afterward, the attackers opened fire with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. The master of MSC Jasmine raised an alert, sent most of his sailors to the ship’s citadel, and ordered his security team to return fire. The pirates retreated, but didn’t get far. Two warships responding to MSC Jasmine’s distress signal, the American USS Halyburton and French FS Surcouf, intercepted the skiff and caught its mother ship to boot. Twelve pirates were taken into custody.

3. Nigeria (22 Pirate Attacks)
Attacked Vessel: PM Salem
National Flag: Honduras
Vessel Type: Offshore Support Vessel
Date: Dec. 13, 2012

Pirates arm themselves no matter where on the globe they operate, but perhaps no pirates on earth arm themselves with such high-caliber weapons as the pirates in Nigeria have over the last year. PM Salem was underway about 25 nautical miles southwest of Bayelsa, Nigeria, when pirates in a boat approached quickly from the rear of the vessel. The interlopers were armed with machine guns, and began firing on PM Salem, pictured, as they chased the Honduran vessel. The ship’s master opened up his throttle, fired off a distress message and ordered all crew except for himself and the onboard security team to a safe room. The security team took positions on PM Salem’s stern and returned fire. A vicious fight ensued and went on for 20 minutes before the security team finally drove off the attackers. Their successful efforts came at a horrific price, however: Three security team members were shot, one of them losing his life.

4. Gulf of Aden (10 Pirate Attacks)
Attacked Vessel: North Sea
National Flag: Singapore
Vessel Type: Tanker
Date: Feb. 22, 2012

Sometimes, the pirates shoot back. Crewmembers aboard the North Sea were already on alert after spotting a suspicious dhow—a wooden sailing vessel that pirates sometimes use as a “mother ship”—in the vicinity. Shortly after, the men saw a small skiff about 1.5 nautical miles away and closing in at 20 knots. The ship’s master sent a distress signal to the UK Maritime Trade Operation, a Royal Navy fleet that runs anti-pirate patrols in the Gulf of Aden. The British, though far distant, replied that they would immediately dispatch a military helicopter. The skiff drew closer, and security personnel aboard the North Sea saw that the pirates were armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Security fired warning shots, and the pirates immediately fired back. A ship-to-ship firefight broke out, with the pirates reeling off more than 50 rounds. Finally, they broke off the attack. Despite an extensive aerial search, the pirates were never located.

5. (tie) India (7 Pirate Attacks)
Attacked Vessel: Maersk Visual
National Flag: Singapore
Vessel Type: LPG Tanker
Date: July 4, 2012

It doesn’t take a speed boat to steal from a ship that’s sitting still. The six pirates who attacked the Maersk Visual, seen here, arrived at the anchored tanker just before 7 a.m. in a long, wooden boat with a sail and oars. The Maersk Visual’s officer of the watch spotted the boat alongside and ordered a sailor to investigate. The sailor spotted two strange men hauling ship property across the deck and gave chase. The pirates jumped into their wooden boat and started rowing. Crewmembers on Maersk Visual raised an alarm and called Visakhapatnam Anchorage port control, but amazingly, the back-to-basics pirates got away with their booty.

Ilaje44:

Indonesia is light years ahead of Nigeria technologically. And it's actually a very open and multi religious society. However, they do have their fair share of religious fanatics. Nevertheless, they are still much better than Arabs or Pakis. And Indonesia does really invest in education. They send their young people abroad on scholarship, unlike Nigeria. In the early 1990s, I had the opportunity to have met a lot of people from that country, very nice and friendly, and I am not a Muslim, unlike my experience with a fellow Nigerian from Kano, who only associated with "Muslims". Indonesia is not what you think.

My point was not to compare indonesia to arab countries or to Nigeria. My point is that most religions are close-minded in philosophy, which is fine; everyone is entitled to whatever they want to believe in. However, such close mindedness must be across the board. Here's an example, Youtube is a popular website where anybody around the world can post anything, and in light of the fact that some countries have laws against blasphemy and stuff like that, you would think that it would be wise to ban such websites as youtube from a country's webspace. But no. They let it run and then slaughter innocent people miles away for *crimes* committed in the free world. Most religions can only thrive under isolation. These girls would not be in trouble now if they did not know that Maroon 5 existed. Just saying.

Metallurgist: marry was pregnant with jesus at the age of 11 years(according to the world oldest church catholic) and latter marries a man more than 100 years old. Your point is what exactly?

Yes, and by your reasoning, we should do away with cars and technology etc because people of those ages never had them. Most of the things we have come to know now, people did not know then. Be realistic and don't defend what you know is awkward simply because some rule book permits it!!!

A lot of people seem to be missing the point here. The basic problem is that of mixing beliefs (on which none has conclusive proofs) with the laws guiding the administration of a state. There are no such things as ISLAMIC and CHRISTIAN countries. Only countries where the majority of people are either muslim or christian. If your country is majorly inhabited by muslims (or christians) and you choose to run it by sharia law (or whatever the christian version of that is, if any), that's fine as long as it suits the majority. *Occurences such as this one are what really drives me crazy. It shows how ignorant some people can be*. However, your law should also include banning things like the internet (on which you know youths can watch or listen to corruptive music or where people from other regions can blaspheme or corrupt your beliefs and incite violence). The freedom and open-mindedness of a group of people was what allowed them to advance as a species (referring to technologically advanced countries). It is odd, sad even, that these bigoted countries want such technological advancements without the freedom. How much sadder it must even be for you if you live your life thinking that all you do is right and all another person does is wrong and that somehow you have been given the power to condemn them or correct them. You have a brain, you have a mind. THINK!!!
