NO fewer than 30 persons were, yesterday, killed as over 60 suffered various degrees of burns while scooping petrol from a fallen tanker at Ahumber village in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that the fuel-laden truck, which was travelling towards Makurdi, skidded off the road and fell while the driver was trying to avoid multiple potholes on that portion of the road.

According to him, “shortly after the truck fell, the people in the village ran towards the spot with buckets to scoop the fuel that was spilling from the truck. They probably thought it was kerosene or diesel.

“It was while this was going on that the truck exploded into a huge flame, which also affected a loaded bus heading towards Otukpo, roasting about 30 persons to death, with more than 60 others sustaining burns.”

Benue State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Aliu Baba, who confirmed the incident, said his men were on ground to evacuate the victims to various hospitals in the area.

He noted that “at the moment we have recovered about 10 corpses. Over 50 persons were affected and are receiving treatment in some hospitals in the area.

“Though for now we are yet to ascertain the real number of the dead, but the fire is still raging and fuel oozing from the nuzzles of the tanker.

“Unfortunately, the tanker fell in a neighbourhood that has shops. They all lost their goods to the fire, but men of the fire service are battling to put out the fire.”

At press time, Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Catherine Anene, said the Command was yet to get details of the incident.

Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare has continued with her good form this season as she finished first in the women’s 200m in the Season’s Best (SB) time of 22.05s at the Eugene Diamond League in Stanford, United States of America.

Okagbare finished faster than a host of big names including Elain Thomspon , Dina Asher-Smith, Salwa Eid-Naser , Dafne Shippers to win the race.

The 22.05s is the second fastest time run in the word so far this year and Okagbare’s second fastest time in history in the 200ms.

The Delta-State born athlete started from lane eight and did well to come out from the bend first before holding on for her win.

This is her second Diamond win after finishing first in the 100m in Rabat.

This is the part i really don't get

A 30 - year - old man , Segun Olawoyin , has allegedly raped a 16 - year - old girl after her parents left home for a church service in Ogun State .
The incident happened on Friday in the Mapara Makogi area of Ibafo in the Obafemi - Owode Local Government Area of the state..

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi , confirmed the incident on Sunday .

Oyeyemi said in a statement that men of the state police command had arrested the suspect, who is a friend of the victim ’ s family , for having unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl .

The PPRO explained that the suspect, who was acting as a brother to the victim before the incident occurred , allegedly committed the offence in the victim parents ’ home around 1 . 30 pm on Friday .

Oyeyemi said , “ The arrest of the suspect followed a report by the victim at the Ibafo Police Station that Olawoyin , who is a family friend , came to their house on the said date around 1 . 30 pm , asking for her parents .

“ She stated further that having realised that her parents had gone to church , the suspect grabbed her and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her .

“ In an attempt to rescue herself , she gave the suspect several bites , but he still had his way. ”

The police spokesman added that the suspect confessed to the crime following his arrest , blaming the devil for his action .

Oyeyemi said , “ Upon the report, the DPO , Ibafo Division , SP Abiodun Ayinde , detailed detectives to the location in the Mapara Makogi area of Ibafo , where the randy man was promptly arrested .

“ On interrogation , the suspect, who confessed to being a friend to the family of the victim , claimed not to know what came over him that made him to do such a thing to the girl , who sees him as her brother.

“ Meanwhile , the Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama , has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Anti - Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution . ”

The University of Education (UEW) has, with immediate effect, sacked its visiting Nigerian lecturer, Prof. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara over comments he made in a video that has since gone viral.

Prof. Nwagbara was arrested on Tuesday but later granted bail for allegedly inciting the Nigerian community in Ghana to devise strategies that will destroy Ghana’s image internationally.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the University said the comments by the lecturer were inimical to the country’s educational sector, hence his dismissal.

“The University is highly disturbed by the huge embarrassment his unguarded statement has brought to the institution, the Ministry of Education, and indeed, Ghana as a whole. The University after subjecting Prof. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara to the internal disciplinary process finds him culpable of gross misconduct and has, accordingly dismissed him.”

The University said, although Prof. Nwagbara has been on sabbatical leave from its Department of Applied Linguistics since October 2018, his comments after it set up an internal disciplinary process observed that the utterances were ‘ unsavoury, unethical and damning about the country, its history as well as its educational system. The University totally dissociates itself from the grossly irresponsible comments and condemns it in no uncertain terms.”

“The University apologises to Ghanaians for Prof. Nwagbara disparaging remarks about this country’s educational system and further indicates that the comment was full of factual inaccuracies”, portions of the statement added.

1. The University of Education Winneba wishes to inform the general public that it has taken a very serious view of the video circulating on social media, involving Prof. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara.

2. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara, a Professor of English Language, has been on sabbatical at the Department of Applied Linguistics since October, 2018.

3. In the said video, Prof. Nwagbara makes several unsavoury, unethical and damning comments about our country, its history as well as its educational system. The University totally dissociates itself from the grossly irresponsible comments and condemns it in no uncertain terms.

4. The University is highly disturbed by the huge embarrassment his unguarded statement has brought to the institution, the Ministry of Education, and, indeed, Ghana as a whole.

5. The University, upon receipt of the video, immediately invoked its internal disciplinary process to fully examine his conduct relative to the content of the video.

7. The University wishes to indicate that it has in the past hosted several scholars on sabbatical leave from various countries, including Nigeria, and same have conducted themselves with high degree of decorum and professionalism during their stay. Prof. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara’s behaviour is totally deviant and an aberration that runs contrary to those of his predecessors or the others currently at post.

8. The University after subjecting Prof. Augustine Uzoma Nwagbara to internal disciplinary process finds him culpable of gross misconduct and has, accordingly, dismissed him.
9. The University apologises to Ghanaians for Prof. Nwagbara’s disparaging remarks about this country’s educational system and further indicates that the comments were full of factual inaccuracies.
