Do a simple search and see how the shutdown is affecting the running of government, as in, do you even expect a Government to function properly when it is SHUTDOWN?

1. Misrepresentation of the truth:

In recent weeks, I’ve noticed a curious trend among some Nigerian elders and religious leaders particularly a number of Islamic clerics and public figures who have chosen to deliberately misrepresent Donald Trump’s renewed attention toward Nigeria. Their claim? That Trump’s statements about helping Nigeria out of its current chaos amount to an invasion.

That word invasion is thrown around with such reckless abandon that one would think U.S. troops had already landed on the Lagos shoreline. In truth, what Trump has offered is not an invasion but an intervention a political and humanitarian lifeline to a country that has been slowly bleeding from within and interestingly, one that we have benefitted from already from the previous Trump administration (more on that later, keep reading.)

And let’s be clear: this misrepresentation isn’t coming from a place of ignorance. It’s a well calculated and deliberate attempt by those who have benefitted from this situation, either by spreading radical Islam, by making money from these kidnappings, the military budget or from all these factors collectively. It’s the same political game Nigerians have seen played over and over again, when truth threatens comfort, spin it into fear.

2. We’ve benefitted from Trump's olive branch in the past.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Trump administration provided real support not empty promises to Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram. U.S. military training, intelligence sharing, and aircraft sales were central to Nigeria reclaiming nearly 90% of Boko Haram’s territory, as documented by the BBC and Vanguard.

So, if Trump’s cooperation was welcomed and celebrated then, why is it suddenly being painted as a hostile act now?why was there no talk of the big bad man (USA) coming to steal our resources then?.
Did “invasion” only become a problem once some people realized it might upset the status quo?


3. Trump’s Track Record: Cold hard facts

Here’s a quick reminder for those who conveniently forget recent history:

February 2017: Trump’s first call to Buhari. He pledged full U.S. support against Boko Haram, commending Nigeria’s effort in rescuing Chibok girls (CNN, VOA).

2017: Trump approved the sale of 12 A-29 Super Tucano jets, a deal previously blocked under the Obama administration specifically to boost Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations (VOA, Vanguard).

April 2018: Buhari visited the White House. Trump openly praised Nigeria’s role in fighting ISIS-affiliated groups and raised alarm over the rising killings of Christians (CNN, Vanguard).

2019: Boko Haram lost most of its territory, largely due to enhanced U.S. military support and equipment (BBC).

December 2020: Trump officially designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for its religious freedom violations, signaling that Washington would no longer look away from targeted killings of Christians (BBC Pidgin, Premium Times).

These are not the actions of a man “targeting” Nigeria. They are the actions of an ally one who saw Nigeria not as a pawn, but as a partner.

So when groups now claim that Trump “suddenly” wants to intervene, one must ask:

where were you when Trump was helping Nigeria reclaim its sovereignty in 2019?

4. When Biden Pulled the Plug

The real reversal came not from Trump, but from his successor.

In 2021, the Biden administration quietly removed Nigeria from the CPC list ,despite clear evidence of worsening attacks on Christians and minorities. The same administration went further by applying the Leahy Law and the Child Soldiers Act to restrict arms sales and military training to Nigeria, citing “human rights concerns.”

In practice, this meant the U.S. could only send “non-lethal aid” medical kits, radios, and pickup trucks ,while terrorists upgraded their weapons and widened their territory.

Unsurprisingly, by 2022, Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks had surged by over 30%, according to BBC Pidgin. The U.S. had gone from a strategic partner to a cautious observer, and Nigeria paid the price in blood.

Now Trump has returned to the scene, talking about restoring aid, reimposing CPC status, and re-establishing accountability. Yet instead of gratitude, some of our leaders are calling it “interference.”

Let’s be honest, Trump isn’t “starting a new fight.” He’s trying to finish the war against radical Islamic terrorism in Nigeria, a war that Biden and the democrats abandoned.

5. The “They Want Our Resources” Brigade

And then there’s the ever-amusing group of self-appointed “resource defenders.” You’ve probably seen them on social media or heard them on talk shows, clutching imaginary oil barrels and shouting that “America wants to steal our resources!”

It’s an old and tired tune , one that sounds suspiciously selective. Because when the Nigerian government went to the Obama administration in 2015 to plead for help against Boko Haram, nobody accused the U.S. of coming for our oil wells.

So what changed? Why weren't they concerned about Obama coming to "steal our oil" back in 2015? Did the U.S. issue a one-time anti-terror coupon ? Did the US give us a one time Black Friday "we wouldn't steal your oil" discount deal back in 2015? or are some people just allergic to accountability?

The truth is simple: Trump’s renewed involvement isn’t about oil or gold; it’s about saving lives and confronting a threat that our own inept leadership has either enabled or ignored.

6. The Agents of Chaos

Then there are those deliberately pretending to be from different regions of Nigeria, stirring up talk of “break-up” and “regime change.”

These are not people from the regions they claim to come from. They are paid agents of confusion, often sponsored by those who profit from this reign of terror, people whose political and financial fortunes depend on Nigeria remaining unstable.

They hide behind fake accounts and regional identities to spread falsehoods and inflame division, framing Trump’s call for intervention as an opportunity to tear Nigeria apart.

Make no mistake: these individuals are not who they claim to be. Their goal is chaos. And chaos is precisely what keeps the innocent dying while the powerful remain comfortable.

This intervention is not about politics. It’s about stopping the ongoing Christian genocide that too many in leadership have chosen to ignore.


7. The Knock-Off, Overnight Pan-African performative activists

Then there’s the new breed of overnight Pan-Africanists. These are the self-styled performative revolutionaries who have likely read a few pages of Kwame Nkrumah or Nelson Mandela, downloaded a couple of Fela songs, and suddenly crowned themselves defenders of African pride.

Their activism begins and ends on social media timelines, where they sprinkle buzzwords like “African unity” and “fight against imperialism” without offering a single practical solution. They quote Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X as if watching a few documentaries makes them political philosophers.

Let’s be honest, this is more performance than purpose. They crave attention, not progress (yes, looking at you, Sowore and Hudeyin), perhaps it’s time to admit that shouting “revolution” online isn’t the same as building one in real life.

These ones are best left ignored; history is busy dealing with serious people.

8. Afenifere, MURIC, and the Northern Leaders : The champions of the current Misrepresentation

Groups like Afenifere, MURIC, and some northern elders have been loudly claiming that Trump “suddenly” decided to target Nigeria. But facts don’t support that narrative.

From 2017 to 2020, Trump worked hand in hand with President Buhari , a northern Muslim, providing support, equipment, and intelligence. That relationship was not only cordial but productive. Boko Haram was crushed to its lowest point in a decade under that partnership.

So to now paint the same man as an aggressor is not only misleading but morally dishonest.

If these groups truly care about Nigeria’s unity, they should focus on justice for victims, not on protecting the egos of politicians who let this terror fester. Deflecting blame does not bring back the dead, nor does it rebuild burnt churches or ruined communities.

9. Intervention, Not Invasion

At its core, this is what the debate comes down to, perspective.

Trump’s renewed stance is not a declaration of war; it’s a call for accountability and action. He is resuming the 2017–2020 plan that worked, not reinventing it.

Those shouting “invasion” would rather Nigeria stay in darkness than accept a helping hand that exposes their failures. But history is not kind to those who choose pride over progress.

Lives matter more than excuses. Lives matter more than resources.

If Nigeria is bleeding, those who come with healing hands should not be called invaders. They should be recognized for what they are, partners willing to stand with a nation that has long been left to fight alone.
