...as NUC approves 20 academic programmes for a take-off

The teeming admission seeking Nigerian youths and adults now have a goldmine of opportunities with the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) as the Ivory Tower has been graciously given an official nod to commence her Part-Time academic programmes from the 2020/21 academic session which kicks off in October this year.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) in a letter of approval, signed for its Executive Secretary by the Commission's Director of Academic Planning, Dr N.B Saliu, directed FUOYE to commence 20 Part-Time academic programmes from the 20/2021 academic session.

According to a press statement by the Special Adviser on Media Matters to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Wole Balogun, FUOYE's Director of Institute of Part-Time Studies, Prof. Abiodun A Ajiboye, disclosed the laudable development on Friday.

Prof. Ajiboye and his Deputy, Dr Adeleke Omolade, were glad to reveal to the media department at the VC's office that FUOYE shall, from October, 2021, commence the Part-Time programmes with 20 courses that cut across the 11 faculties of the great and upwardly mobile Citadel of learning.

The statement qouted Prof. Ajiboye as saying that: "There are over 40 programmes put forward before NUC for approval but only 20 programs were approved for a start. The approved programmes included: B.SC Agric Economics and Extension, B.SC Food Science and Technology; B.SC Soil Science and Land Management; B.SC Sociology, B.SC Banking and Finance ; B.SC Political Science and B.SC Psychology.

"Others are B.A English and Literary Studies, B.A History and lnternational Studies, B.A Religious Studies, B.A Theatre and Media Arts, B.SC Demography and Social Statistics , as well as B.SC Peace and Conflict Resolutions.

"Also approved are B.SC Public Administration; B.SC Water Resources Management and Agro Meteorology, B.A Linguistics and Languages, B.Sc Animal Production and Health, B.Sc lnternational Relations; BSc Economics and Development Studies, B.Sc and Sociology".

The statement further added that while admission process for the courses would start very soon, lectures for the programmes shall commence in October and such lectures shall be holding on the main campus temporarily.

"The requirements for admissions are the same with those already published for students on regular undergraduate degree programmes but the duration for the Part-Time courses have one year extension. This means that the weekly part-time students will spend five years for four-year normal programmes, while students on B.SC will spend six years for five year normal programmes..The weekly part-time programmes will commence from 12 noon Fridays through Saturdays," the statement concluded.

AWDROP decries water scarcity, possible health dangers, warns fake drillers against sharp practices



The Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners & Practitioners (AWDROP) otherwise known as Nigerian Borehole Drillers Association has alerted the government of water scarcity and possible health dangers occasioned by current economic hardship in the country.



The President of the association, Engr. Michael Ale made this known to journalists on Wednesday to warn of looming dangers of exposing vulnerable citizens to health risks of consuming unclean water.



Ale maintained that Abuja, Taraba, imo, Bauchi and others are states where scarcity of water is endemic saying the cause is traceable to high cost of drilling which mounts pressure on government to provide potable water for its citizens.



He added that this development has given rise to individuals and corporate organizations to patronize unprofessional drillers which degenerates to haphazard drillings while many operators engage in dubious acts.



The AWDROP president therefore tasked the government to drastic decision to address the anomalies before it gets out of hands.



He added that soon professional drillers register will be opened for Nigerians to know who to patronize when it comes to borehole drilling in Nigeria.

He said: "Water scarcity is hitting many states now and the cost of drilling is getting high because of the exchange rate and the materials for borehole drilling for example, Casings. Invariably, the cost of drilling is high which is mounting more pressure on government to provide water.



"This scenario is making the vulnerable more exposed to health risk which will in turn make government spend more on health.



"My advise to the state where such instance is precarious is to have a Water Supply resilient plan where emergency response is prompt. It is important to also note that government have responsibility to make water available to the citizen that is, access to potable water at different cost human and financial as the case may inferred.



"State battling with water scarcity include Abuja, Taraba, imo, Bauchi, others and my call to development partners is to make a conceited effort in making sure the result for the program they are supporting is sustainable.



"Finally, decentralize water supply system is geared towards locations where there is not transmission pipeline hence access is still very important. This method will create employment opportunities for the youth through training of various artisans on pipe repairs and plumbing works.



"Many water operators are now extorting Nigerians because of the demand in water supply while other borehole drillers have increased their cost of drilling because of high cost of purchase of Casings for their drilling.



"Government can support the association to stem this extortion by supporting the Drillers' association as a means to subsidy for the masses.

Many water schemes projects from government and agencies should be critically reviewed, if not, the projects are bound to fail.



"Let me warm the drilling rig operators to desist from haphazard jobs referred to 'sharp sharp'. This practice is degrading our environment because of the amount of air compressed and used in drilling through the basement formation. Professional Drillers register will be opened soon, so Nigerians will know who to patronize when it comes to borehole drilling in Nigeria



"The central Bank should also look into the forex in the materials for Casing. The cost of Casing, diesel and other material has skyrocketed, Government should also come to the aid of the citizen because very soon if nothing is done, Nigerians will carry placard for water. Let the operators within the water sector also stop the extortion", Ale advised.
